Hmmm. I’m not sure they know it’s not a Hilton anymore. I’ll mention the other buffets, but I know she had her heart set on that one.
Good choice, and glad to see you agree!
They used to offer some great 50% off deals, but I haven’t gotten any of those in awhile - but one of the few places in Las Vegas worth the full price!
You forgot to mention they also have a small selection of Indian food there as well! (My favorite!)…but that dessert bar - oh my - enough to make me cry.
Slightly off topic, but should any of you come to Vegas, many places offer a special ALL DAY buffet pass - although how in the hell you could go to a buffet 3 or more times in a single day is a totally mystery to me…after one buffet, I am ready for a long nap and a stomach pump.
Indian, a thousand times, Indian. As has been pointed out, the dishes survive being in a steam table like no other culture’s does. The better ones always bring tandori chicken and fresh nan to your table, and if you visit during a busy time, the odds of the samosas and whatever you call those crispy tempura-style vegetables going limp is minimal.
Was it New Orleans House? That place was a natural wondor.
When in Tidewater Virginia, Captain George’s. When here in New England, Nordic Lodge.
All you can eat seafood. NOMMMMMMM!!!
Chinese all you can eats are a staple around here, often with mongolian and sushi sections. I don’t think I’ve seen a mexican all you can eat since Chi Chi’s experimented with it ~20 years ago. Never been to an italian all you can eat (unless you count pizza buffets) but I don’t like italian food much (not a fan of pasta).
But knowing you can come back for a little plateful anytime would remove the incentive to stuff. Sounds like a great idea (both for the comfort of diners, and for keeping people in the casino).
Aside from that: I believe Soup Plantation and Sweet Tomatoes are the same company. I’ve had only good experiences at both–no ‘old-tasting’ food; great variety on the veggies.
Seriously? I used to eat at AYCE places in Tulsa and Dallas all the time. If you wanted more food, you would just raise a little flag. There was a place in Tulsa where you could get AYCE steaks. Now (sadly) most AYCE places are in the form of Golden Corral. DISGUSTING.
This.
When it’s a good Indian Buffet, it can’t be beat.
Of course, when it’s shit, it’s not only horrible tasting, but it’s effects last for days…
Chinese because chicken-on-a-stick.
An a la carte serving of most Italian entrees is plenty for me, so AYCE Italian isn’t a gain over a la carte in my case. Hence not Italian. And Chinese doesn’t tend to be, for me, something I want to stuff myself with. But if Taqueria Poblano in Alexandria every had an AYCE buffet of their appetizers, I’d be right over. I wonder just how many of their pork taquitos I could eat?
Outside the three specifically named in the poll, I’ve been to several excellent AYCE Indian lunch buffets.
I like Indian restaurant buffets, but they can be pricey. There’s one in the next town that charges fourteen bucks for the buffet and that doesn’t even include sodas. Most entrees on the regular menu aren’t that much. It seems to me that if you go with a group, you can order several different entrees to share and end up paying less per person.
Used to have a decent Chinese buffet here. For me, their winners were crab Rangoon and sauteed green beans.
There is a decent one in Willimantic - they have spring rolls with no mushrooms, which I am deathly allergic to. I love a good egg roll, one that is 95% veggies with a few mostly identifiable scraps of meat [preferably that red cooked pork] We do baked in muffin tin wonton skin egg rolls but it just isn’t the same.
Ours has one buffet section of western foods with some of the best pot roast style pork roast. Just swimming in the cooking liquid and falling off the bones. They also have a great pepper chicken, and a peanut butter chicken [some form of battered and deep fried cut up and then in a peanut butter sauce] and the red bean paste sesame buns I dearly love and am too lazy to make for myself.
Yup, I can and have made pretty much everything we like at a Chinese buffet at home [especially the cold sesame noodles. We cheat and make it with the same peanut butter dipping sauce we use for chicken satay, we like the hot spice kick.] It is almost as cheap and hella easier to go out for it.
I am ambivalent about the whole fast food culture that thinks it is easier to go out instead of cooking it at home, then I console myself that Rome managed to be an empire builder on the huddled masses of slum dwellers who didn’t have kitchens. ;)
I like Mexican food but find it filling & spicy so a buffet wouldn’t really work for me. But I’d certainly try it!
We had one good Chinese buffet & one so-so one. An excellent one opened & now the good one closed & is now a Mexican restaurant (non-buffet) while the health dept closed the so-so one. The good one was a favorite stop of mine- right between my house & my church. And I can always eat my money’s worth.
An Italian buffet?? Oh, my hopes and dreams!!! Closest we have to the is Pizza Hut at lunch & Mr. Gatti’s. Not a lot of variety there.
In my area, our buffet choices are - the State Park Inn’s buffet, Ponderosa Steak House, “The Pines”- local - has the best fried fish & persimmon pudding I’ve ever eaten, Pizza Hut, Mr. Gatti’s Pizza, “The Famous Bello’s Pizza” (purely local), Frisch’s Big Boy Breakfast Bar.
As for eating my money’s worth. Heck- I can do that anywhere!
I went with Mexican. The lack of variety is a feature. Plus they tend to keep a lot of stuff separate. That way I know I can eat the stuff on the bar. Chinese is iffy, and Italian is almost certainly a no-go.
That said, I’m looking forward to going to my favorite Chinese buffet once we have money to eat out again. (Teacher’s salary makes it harder the months before and after school starts.) I’ll just have to be careful. I successfully navigated the salad bar for my mother’s birthday, and I’ve eaten their takeout before.
Dim Sum …
Mex
Goes better with Negra Modelo
Around here, almost all the cuisine-specific AYCE buffets tend to be Chinese, so that’s almost all I have experience with.
I have eaten at an AYCE Indian place once, but I don’t like enough different Indian dishes to have really enjoyed it.
I don’t count Cici’s Pizza since that’s not actual food.
Voted “Other” for Indian. Love a decent Chinese buffet as well.
Some people can’t abide any buffet. But to my experience, they’re not all created equal and there is such a thing as decent (or, occasionally, better than decent) food on a buffet. Typically, you get what you pay for.
