Long ago I was a patron of ALAMAK chat … at alamak if you did almost anything wrong the ops would boot you … and SOMETIMES they would boot you just for the hell of it. They wanted you to pay them $5 a month for the privilege if being an op … can you say “coercion” ?¿ Can you say “extortion” ¿¿¿¿? Well after awhile I figured freedom was worth more than chatting with Nazis so I left. Then I went to cHaTML and it was great … anything went and generally speaking people were very happy there despite the occasional flaming and vulgarity at times. I remained there 5 years and started the only known chat newspaper called the CT Times Gazette which was pretty successful if I do say so myselves. Check it out cttimes.cjb.net.
Now, to broaden my net experience, I have taken to “boards” and once again I find people telling me what I can and cannot do … so let me put it this way …
If I is gonna be banneded for posting in my own bernacular then let the banning begin for is chatting so dear or posting so sweet as to be purchased at price of chains and slavery ?¿?¿? DATo, can I just haul you over to this quiet corner and have a quick word in your pink and shell-like ear?
As you can see by my registration date and post count, under my name to the left, I’m a newbie here and I just wanted to let you in on a couple of secrets of life 'round here.
First, the people here are mostly pretty welcoming and friendly if you are that way to them and if you stick to the first rule of the boards: don’t be a jerk.
Second, you don’t have to use punctuation, but if you want people to be able to read your posts then punctuation helps. So do complete, coherent sentences. After all, the internet is all about communication; why throw down caltrops on the information superhighway?
Nobody here’s overly impressed with chatroom style spelling, and if you do choose to post sans punctuation and spellchecker, someone will always be on your back about it. This is the price you will pay for posting in your chosen style. Think about whether it’s worth it.
Third, if you’re going for the record on fastest-ever cycle from “hello” to “final flaming meltdown and exit, often via banning”, I think someone’s done it faster, so don’t bother. Just settle in and don’t be a jerk.
On behalf of this newbie, welcome aboard; try not to give the rest of us newbies a bad name, 'kay?
