aha you are definitely an alpha male.
CnoteChris, how did you get over 500 posts, & I never heard of you until right this minute?
Are you sure you’re not from an alternate universe SDMB?
Well, I don’t hate you; but given time & effort… maybe I could work something out for you. OK?
How was that, for a starter?
Hiya porcupine. Welcome to the SDMB.
Spidey–Love your little spidey in your new sig!
CnoteChris: You said “What other’s think of me does not weigh that heavily on my mind.” Well, if that is so, why did you start a thread titled “Allright, Who hates Cnote Chris?”
Thanks, Green Bean. Can I be part of the clique now?
I dunno, because AFAIK, I’m not part of it. We can start our own, though–only vegetables and prickly animals allowed.
Don’t hate me because of my hair!
Ahhh, the joys of posting drunk.
Were do I start? I dunno. I’m about to put a hand on my eye to make sure the spelling here is correct. But considering it didn’t work before, I doubt it will now.
Have fun with me. Abuse me, tell me I’m an idiot. Considering I started this thread, I guess I deserve it.
Saturday night and alone again. Did I mention I started drinking again?
Hi Y’all. Get ready for another fun post from the c-man.
I’m glad you like the little spider. It took me a while to get the legs lined up right.
Do you suppose a spider is a prickly enough animal to join the clique with you and Green Bean?
Whaddya say Green Bean?
Hi CnoteChris! It’s not good to drink alone; I hope you aren’t too sad.

That would be really cool, Scotti. Maybe I could even convince you of my qualifications for Governor.
I’m not sure when yet–that needs some planning. As for where…I have the impression you’re from the Seattle area somewhere. I’m from Central Pennsylvania, so if we met straight-line halfway it would be somewhere east of Bismark, North Dakota.

Yeah, Cnote, and don’t hate him for being so much older than you, either.
[Thanks about the sig. I at first thought porcupine said it. Now back to the regularly scheduled thread.]
I’m not sad spider.
But I’ve been sitting here thinking Aha wouldn’t have been that bad of a music teacher.
Now that’s when you know you’ve drank too much.
Kind of a long trek for a date, huh?
I, for one, think CnoteChris is a pretty cool name. Original, containing an actual name, and presumably indicative of some aspect of your personality.
I say don’t take it personally. I too, think it’s great that all these online friendships have formed. Kinda neat.
What can I add to this?
I know and associate frequently with people here for one or more of these reasons:
- They frequently post to the same threads as I do in GQ.
- They piss me off by being an asshole to me.
- They make me smile by being sweet and nice to me.
- They are frequently in chat, and talk to me.
- They are lesbian (hey, it’s one of my life issues - I relate to those who are as well).
AFAIK, you do not fall into any of the above categories. Can you? Sure (except number 5, I imagine). But to tell you the truth, I didn’t even know you were male until this thread, as we simply have not met under any of the 5 categories above. Or if we have, I must have forgotten.
ALL boards and newsgroups have cliques, just like all clubs and organizations do. You can’t hold the SDMB to a higher standard, just because we as a population are much smarter than most. MENSA has a lot of smart people in it, and is extremely cliquish, and I had great difficulty fitting in (which is why I left).
A lot of what kelli said above I agree with also.
One last word - firewall. I’m curious how you know that this person’s ISP account wasn’t just being spoofed, and why you won’t post their name here. And what “tracking software” did you use to determine this?
Where should I begin.
Hmmm.
A screwed up post that somewhat relayed my point but was lost in the shuffle? Wouldn’t be the first time for me.
A joke here, a joke there, and accusation that threw everyone off guard, and I’m not sure what this thread is about anymore.
Well, I kinda, sorta, maybe, do.
All it had to do was being a piss-off against threads that exclude other’s that use this board.
I can see how cliques start and spread. I myself was apart of a major clique in school. I’m not now, but I can see the irony behind it.
Why exclude others by posting threads that encourage this behavior when your more than likely the group that was ignored before?
Some people have come up with good points for and against this trend.
I find it highly suspect and get pissed when I see these kinds of threads. Hate me? Love me? Doesn’t matter. It really doesn’t. If it did, I’d doubt I’d make a post pointing out this fact.
Why it happens, I have no clue. I’m simply making an observation.
–To those of you interested in the Hacker dude, I didn’t and won’t reveal his address because I’m not sure of the legalities behind it. It happened, I responded, and was treated fairly. I don’t think I should stoke this fire. I will add, that since I’ve made this post, three different people have tried accessing my computer. I remained quiet after the first one that threw the subject off, but mention it here, only because it’s still happening and I’ll choose to address it privately. Why this post would initiate this kind of hack, I have no idea.
People who live near each other may come to dope fests and meet each other that way also.
That’s weird about the computer thing though. I didn’t know it was possible through the board (although I read a book called Positive Match, by Tony Chiu, that described some amazing feats of hacking, so I suppose someone with skills like that could do almost anything).
What would be the purpose, any guesses? I’ve only read a few of your other posts, but I don’t remember ever reading anything that might have been interpreted as offensive.
Do you think the same person who was banned simply re-registered under different addresses and tried again?
Anyway, back to the OP, I think as you post more, more people will get to know you. Have you ever gone to the chat they mention? Maybe that will help.
See ya around the board.
Spider-
Beats me. It’s more than likely the same person. As people who have seen and known this board have noticed, it’s not too hard to come back again as a pupppet.
Why are they doing it? Don’t know. Is it because of this thread? Could be, but I’m not blaming anyone. It’s odd It’d start after I blow my stack and essentially ask people to do it. My bravado at the time aside, it wasn’t all that hard to figure out the persons address. I have a firewall and some tracking software installed. A few terse e-mails and a phone call got the matter resolved. I think.
How are they doing it? Another mystery to me. I just know what’s being logged and responding to it. To my surprise, I’ve been treated terrific by my ISP and theirs. Had it been a true and serious attempt, I doubt I ever would have known. But getting into my MS files, hope your having fun with three different versions of my resume. Wanna hire me?
If anything has come out of this thread, I’d hope it be some more consideration towards starting those kind of threads.
Will this thread stop it? Not a chance. But I think a couple people have read it and thought, ‘Huh. He’s got a point there.’
Was I being arrogant and snotty? You bet. Have I mentioned I was drinking? Hmm. I think I did.
Am I sad and upset. No. Half of my post was made in jest and half was made seriously.
Have I been offended by what others have posted? Again, nope. It takes alot to get me offended and angry.
I’ve actually had a fun time reading some of the replies. I’m not sure if I should be happy or upset that a thread that says ‘Who hates Cnote’ has recieved this many responses.
I think I need to title my threads better.
Again, I’m smiling as I read these posts, there are some funny people out there.
Now. Back to the bashing.
By the way.
Aha. I’ve become a fan. I don’t know when or how it happened, but I like ya. Hey there big boy
[/Feeble attempt at humor machine turned off]
No, don’t panic. But where the Hell were you when I had to sit through those stupid music classes in school?
I’m guessing all you had is a software or hardware firewall, and looked at the log to find an IP, then used Sam Spade or whois or whatever to trace it to an ISP.
If this is all you did, then you were right not to post their name. I was hacking TCP/IP during the Bush Administration, and although out of practice I could easily fool things like these.
I’m curious, how do you know someone is hacking into your computer? Do you see the signs of it, or do you need special security software to notify you?
Try here:
This is actually a pretty good, full-featured, non-crippleware, non-nagware free software firewall (free for personal use). It’s very easy to use, and IMO is pretty secure. I have great difficulty circumventing a system using it, and when I do I can’t do anything harmful or malicious. It is very well reviewed and acclaimed, and until I got a hardware firewall I swore by it.
This software will log events of suspicious or blatantly hacking activity, and put them in a pop-up window, and/or logs them to a file, with date, time, IP, port, UDP or TCP, etc. Then, you can ask it for help on “what was going on when this person was trying to access my PC” in it’s help.
It was a real eye-opener just how many times my DSL connection was being probed through the day - about 5-20 events per day. It was also amazing how many of them originated in Korea too (unless they were being spoofed). Just make sure you read the instructions carefully, otherwise it’s an incredibly easy tool to use.
For detailed info on what was going on (as you look through the activity logs), try here:
Enjoy!
