alphaboi867, is it so hard to write "your"?

Cause saying “u’r” just makes you look like a complete idiot.

This isn’t really a screaming Pit, just a mere question.

“your” = four letters, and not looking like an idiot.

“u’r” = three letters, idiot status.
Really, what’s the benefit?

Just a WAG, but it appears that he learned how to (mis)spell by sending text messages. And if it bothers you. it just proves that U R 2 old 2 keep up w/tech stuf.

I can understand L337. I can understand “omfg ur soooo lame!!1” What I can’t understand is the extra effort of the apostrophe. Twice!

And it sticks out like a sore thumb in an otherwise well-composed post.

Looks more like two letters and a punctuation mark to me … does that put you at “3rd grade English level status”?

Pardon me, I should have said keystrokes. “u’r” still equals three keystrokes.

No need to get snippy.

Apparently there is.

I’m not 2 old 2 keep up, but… L337?

Leetspeak.

I guess it’s just a matter of knowing when to use proper (or something resembling that) English and IMspeak. Here, and most other places I post, I try to use full words, proper punctuation and capitalization, etc.

If I’m sending an IM or text message on my cell, it’ll be all IM shorthand and lowercase, with minimal (if any) punctuation, simply because of the time factor involved in actually typing on a cell.

'Cause when I’m in a hurry and texting a friend to see if they have any plans, “wht ru doin 2nite” gets the point across and saves my thumbs. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks, ETF.

It almost makes my teeth hurt every time I see “text” being used as a verb. I’m sure my parents’ generation felt the same way about “party”, though.

That’s OK. When we’re rocking on the front porch of the Old Doper’s Home together, we’ll compare notes about that sort of annoying shit. :stuck_out_tongue:

See, what I don’t get is:

  1. He wasn’t in a hurry. The rest of his post was fine.

  2. It was lazyness with extra effort. Why couldn’t he just say “ur” like a normal lazy person?

What the hell?

“laziness” = eight letters, and exhibiting standard orthography.

“lazyness” = eight letters, and exhibiting nonstandard orthography, but preserving the orthographic integrity of the root adjective.

Really, what’s the benefit?

I say good day to u!

Crap…

Right, it’s bedtime.

I think he’s confused on the grammar. ur is the possessive and u’r is the contraction. A lot of people get that wrong.

No, no; everyone knows you need an apostrophe for possessives, too, as in “Bob’s”, “it’s”, and “potatoe’s”. It just has to go at the end to make the difference clear, e.g.:

“Alfred, is this ur’ rutabaga?”
“Alfred, u’r scaring me with that rutabaga.”

But to be really honest, putting an apostrophe in txt spk is just daft, because everyone knows that punctuation is really difficult to enter on a phone. No self-respecting Milly or Kevin would go to the effort of the 5 keypresses required to enter an apostrophe when the extra seconds gained could enable them to go on another happy slapping run before torching that bin down the bus station, or at least put another couple of “luvs” at the end of their earth-shattering communiqué.

u’r: My WAG: Asian

alpha: Either in a frat, an aspiring astronomer or an optimistic doomsdayer
boi: Probably not female
867: One 8 and no 4’s = Chinese Asian

Yep, you’ll pass the time, noting…
