A couple of weeks ago I filed my paper 2019 Federal 1040. I know, I know, a dinosaur am I. :smack:
But I digress.
Today, while looking for something else, I read on the IRS.gov website that because of Covid-19 issues, that the IRS is not currently processing paper tax returns.
I’m pretty darn sure that this would be a really disastrous idea full of* numerosos* negative ramifications, but I’d like to ask just for confirmation:
If I were to file today the same exact numbers from my already submitted paper 2019 Federal tax return but electronically this time, what would be the most likely outcome?
Having read that paper returns are not currently processing, I’d like to legally speed things up if possible.
Is there any way to speed up my 2019 Federal tax refund after having already submitted a paper return?
My guess is that such an investigation would close pretty quickly with no bad results, once they see that all the information - even the addresses - is identical.
To answer the OP, I think much would hinge on whether the IRS might have already received and processed the paper forms before they stopped accepting them. If they did process it, then I suppose there might be ill effects when they get the electronic version. But if they have not yet processed the paper return, then they are unaware of it, and you can submit the electronic forms to get your refund soon etc etc. Someday they will see your paper return, and maybe there will be hell to pay, but that’s only a maybe, and you’ll probably have your refund by then.
I am not a tax professional, and I’m certainly not YOUR tax professional. I have no idea how the IRS does their stuff and what the rules are. But I do read a lot of science fiction.
