Thank you very much, Tuckerfan, but at only 5’3" I’m pretty much not qualified to do any real modeling work. I like modeling for hobbyist photographers because it’s fun, but I’m too short to get paid for it. I do enjoy acting but I’m more of a comedian than a serious actress, and it’s something that I’d have to forfiet art, writing and everything else for 'cause to succeed I’d have to totally devote myself to it. Which I’m not willing to do.
But if it makes you feel any better, I’m thinking about getting into poetry slam and even trying my hand at some open mic stand-up, once I can work out a good routine. And you can count my ribs if you like. You’re not counting anything else though.
Tuckerfan, Jinwicked says she’s tiny… it’s supposed to be VERY hard to get anywhere as a model if you’re less than about 5’9". Assuming that by tiny she meant short.
True, but there’s a need for petite models I’m sure, and being short hasn’t hurt Tom Cruise’s career. Besides, have you seen any of jin’s photo? Can’t find the shot of her in the Catholic school girl uniform on her site, but it’s a stunning photo. Not only does it capture the subtle forbidden thoughts one has about Catholic school girls, but there’s a burning intesity in her facial expression (in a totally non-sexual way) that’s difficult to describe. Frankly, I doubt many of the professional models/actresses working today could pull it off.
Tom Cruise isn’t a model, and in fact he does get made fun of for being short. In movies, they have ways of making people look taller, that’s the other thing.
Is there a need for petite models? Sure. But that’s not what most agencies or whomever appear to be looking for. I have a friend who’s about 5’ tall and having this problem. She’s been told by a lot of people she looks like Mena Suvari (who, in fact, was also short for a model at 5’4").
The pictures didn’t really work for me, but if any of you ever run into a situation where you simply have to spend some naked time with Ms. Hannigan, I’d be happy to jump on that particular grenade for you.
reddragon – there you go! That’s what I’m talking about. Thanks for sending out that link; I was starting to be crestfallen that maybe my Willow-as-skank fantasies weren’t everything I was hoping them to be. But that photo just proves that it was just the FHM photographers not knowing what they were doing.
(I just looked at some of the other FHM photos on that site – they even managed to make Julie Benz look kind of goofy. The hell?!?)
LOL… that “burning intensity” is “Oooh my God it’s 95 degrees, 80% humidity out here, the sun in is my face, I can’t see, and I feel like I’m about to pass out.” Those wore the worst pictures ever… The heat really was unbearable.
I’m of two minds about this whole “too skinny” thing.
I certainly agree with jinwicked and the other posters who have said that just because you appear skinny does not mean you are unhealthy. I know a few people–male and female–who eat plenty of food (without barfing it up) and are very healthy, yet still appear to be skinny.
However, the problem i have is that, while some people in the real world are naturally skinny, the impression one gets from magazines like FHM and the rest of the media is that this is a natural state for everyone. I would never tell someone i met that they were too skinny, but until magazines and TV shows start showing a few women who don’t have protruding ribs, i’ll reserve the right to keep criticizing them.
One thing I really like about Melissa Joan Hart is that she’s showing a more obtainable body image and she’s still pretty hot. I can’t fault the skinny types, e.g. Calista Flockhart (sp?), for wanting to be thin. And from the photos of real anoxeria sufferers, I can only assume that since Hannigan, Flockhart, et al don’t look like holocaust survivors, they’re probably just skinny and not sick.
Then criticise the magazine and TV industry for showing only women that look that way. They’re the ones hiring a certain kind of model. Your gripe is with the media, why take it out on the girl? You’ve still no business making snarky comments like people have posted in this thread just because they happen to be thin, not fat. Maybe I should gripe about any hefty women I see on TV or in magazines. “Gee, lay off the cheeseburgers, will ya? I can’t believe they put that heiffer on TV. She must have an eating disorder!” Certainly being overweight is not a natural state for me, or everyone, for that matter. This girl might be skinny, but the other two models from the same photoshoot looked fine to me. Three girls, I saw ribs in one. Does 2 out of 3 qualify as a few??
I’m not interested in whether you think I’m healthy or not, to be honest. Lots of people are unhealthy for lots of reasons. I’m just sick of getting comments like “You need to eat something!” It’s not a compliment, it’s an insult veiled as advice. It’s even worse when it comes from a slightly overweight person who’d go apeshit if I made a similarly-styled comment about their weight. I usually don’t, but after putting up with this for the last two or three years I am starting to get really fed up.
I could deliberately put on 10 or 15 lbs so my ribs don’t poke out, then wear a cute pair of lowrider pants and have a nice little roll over the waist, and people would go “Eww, gross, she needs to lose a few pounds or quit wearing that stuff.” Or I can wear the pants now how I look without visually offending anyone, until some ass makes a comment about how I need to gain weight because I don’t suit his ideal of what an attractive woman should be. I deserve to be able to go about my day without receiving snide comments about my weight just as much as an overweight person, or any person, should be able to.
It’s strange that no one in threads about Spike is jammering about how James Marsters needs a double cheese whopper with x-tra mayo and large order of fries. I guess it’s ugly in a woman, but a gaunt man shows discipline and determination…
Um, in case you didn’t notice, that’s exactly what i said: that i would continue to be critical of the media. Nowhere in this thread have i made a single comment about the woman in question.
