Am I a jerk for opting out of office lunches?

Okay, that changes my advice. I had pictured everyone eating together. I’d keep on eating your own unch, since you’re not actually eating with people.

Excellent suggestions here.

One more point–I don’t know what you’re eating, but you shouldn’t be gaining if you have 1 slice of pizza for lunch, unless it’s Sbarro’s. When my work serves pizza I have 2 slices and a light dinner that evening. Unhealthy food is fattening only if you eat too much of it.

Amen. With that new piece of information you just keep on doing what you’re doing.

Well, what I’ve tried to do is avoid the pile on effect. One slice of pizza doesn’t kill you, one doughnut doesn’t kill you, one slice of cake doesn’t kill you. Yet, add those together for a typical day in the office and that’s over 1000 calories. I decided to eliminate all these calories that creep into a typical day.

That way, when I want to splurge, I can do so without guilt. If I want to grab a beer on Saturday watching a game, I will. If I want to go out for Mexican on Saturday night, I can and have some chips and salsa too.

What’s friend chicken? Is it nice?

In this case you are definitely not being rude or antisocial. But, to echo others, you might go to your boss and say that though you appreciate the offer of a free lunch, maybe the choices can be broadened a bit from time to time. Get some menus from places where you’d like to eat and offer them. I bet a lot of people in your group would be very grateful for you doing this.

I love pizza and fried chicken, and I can eat them without gaining, but twice a week would be borrrrrring.

Perhaps they ordered a children’s book.

Does this mean that you would be eating by yourself? You could just place an order and throw it away discreetly!

I don’t actually recommend that, since it is extremely wasteful, but if everyone is eating by themselves it hardly seems like a big deal not to order anything.

On the other hand, if part of the exercise was eating together I’d recommend sitting and socializing with everyone. You wouldn’t have to order the food, just bring what you would eat anyway.

If you’re eating at your desk, there’s no reason you should have to order food. Just stand up and chat when the food arrives. If you eat together, I’d say just bring your lunch to wherever everyone is eating and join in that way.

I also don’t join in the many opportunities I’m presented with to go to the cafeteria or order in. I’m cheap and I’m watching my weight.

My point was that 350 calories of pizza and 350 calories of chicken + salad have the same effect weight-wise.

You may not see it as antisocial. Many coworkers will. Bosses may too. Eat with them, it wont hurt you.

Hmm…I read the words, they just didn’t make sense to me together in that order. :stuck_out_tongue:

As for the OP, yeah, it seems like no one will really care if it’s not a group meal thing, unless you’ve actually sensed some kind of hostility about it. “No thanks, I brought my lunch already” - can’t imagine how that can be taken as insulting!

I think your Boss/Coworker are jerks for not accommodating your reasonable request. You can tell them I think so if you want.

I think you’ll find you get more bang for your caloric buck with the chicken + salad…meaning you can eat more and still stay within your calorie range.
