One reason this purchase isn’t exactly comparable to a hobby is that she’s looking at it as a way to make money. A concern is that the expenses may expand without bound as she keeps searching for more enlightenment and ways to expand her “business”. And since it’s woo-based, logic and financial balance isn’t necessarily part of her decision process. For a hobby like golf, someone might pay $350/mo on golf, that expense is going to be pretty stable. The family can build their budget around that. But with the woo purchases, there’s the concern that the $350 single purchase is just the beginning of a big ramp up. It would be like if someone suddenly decided to be a pro golfer and that a golf trip to Scotland was the way to get started.
In my experience, it is difficult to negotiate with someone who believes they can cast a spell on you.
You must have some stories.
Weirdly enough, her hand gestures when performing Reiki do look a lot like the spells cast by characters on The Magicians.
Just for the record, it sounds like your sanity and your marriage are both fine. But your wife is clearly going through a rough patch & the worst thing about the crystals, etc is that they won’t help her through it. Eventually she will realize that, which will likely leave her even more depressed. It’s very kind of you to support her to the extent you are able.
What about encouraging her to do volunteer work? She wants to help others and a lot of people could benefit from her energy and assistance. There are a lot of avenues & if there’s nothing she likes locally, she could start her own. It might:
– lead to a new job
– help fill the space she’s currently devoting to tarot
– give her a new perspective on money
– make you feel better about dying broke if your wife is saving lives ![]()
