Don’t know how many times I’ve suffered through the setting up of a new computer; transferring all the files, installing all the programs, tweaking the looks of the thing. Often takes 2-3 days.
Just got a new laptop, and recalled Laplink from years ago. Had used it a couple of times, but things were simpler then. So, did a little research, and on Amazon and elsewhere there were quite a few reviews saying it was a disaster. There were others that said it went just fine.
So, bit the bullet (it ain’t cheap now, and can only use it once unless you buy another license) and ordered the CD with a USB cable.
They do note that antispyware and antivirus programs will not be moved, but they are easily installed.
Loaded the program on each computer, updated it, went through the process of setting up, connected the cable, then got to the critical dialog box asking if I wanted to go ahead. With a degree of trepidation, I clicked OK and it started.
To migrate about 12 GB it took a little more than two hours, not bad for an old 1.1 USB cable.
After it was done, rebooted the laptop, and there it was with just about everything from the old computer. All the desktop icons were is random order, but rearranged them, installed the virus and spyware prograsms, plus about 6-7 other small ones that did not move over.
It kept all my settings and tweaks, and now it looks exactly like the desktop. One odd thing, when I opened Outlook’s Contacts, none of them were there, so thought would have to export/import to get them. However, the next time I opened it, for some mysterious reason, there all my contacts were.
It kept all my Thunderbird email, all my bookmarks and everything else as far as I can see.
Big relief, about 2-3 hours to do what used to take 2-3 days. The Wizard was a bit obscure in places, but I had read the documentation on the CD first,so no big surprises.
Good program.
