Not sure, but I can ask my Uncle if they are watching this season and if it was Lithuanian (he’s second gen Canadian, his parents were born in Lithuania and he speaks the language as do my cousins… I might ask him if he’s been there too, possibly. Some of the places looked familiar from photos of his trips back to see relatives.)
For those who don’t have the right character set, the last letter of the Lithuanian word is a “u”, with a bar accent above it. I didn’t see the placeholder when I posted this originally.
THANK YOU! I said the same thing at least eleven hundred times myself. “Vilnius, dammit! Vill-nee-uss! Vilnius schoolmaster! Red October! He’s not Russian, he’s Lithuanian by birth! Do you idiots live under a rock?” It was all very upsetting.
I get it when a place is pronounced differently than it is spelled, and perhaps is not a place people might have been expected to have heard of before. But this is the capital city of a country, and is spelled exactly as it sounds. Vilnius. Just say all the damn letters and you’ve got it. Sheesh.
But Red October was released almost 20 years ago and isn’t even really considered a “Jack Ryan” movie anymore because Alec Baldwin plays Jack Ryan. Most of the racers were little kids when it was released.
Of course, I was a little kid when it was released and I still sought it out in my teenagerhood after watching the two Harrison Ford “Ryan” movies and wanting to see the first. But I still didn’t remember Vilnius.
I think many of the happenings on the show have the same basic explanation: Being smart makes it less likely you will be made a contestant.
Yeah, but geez…it’s on AMC or TNT every freakin’ day.
I don’t recall seeing any cheating, even by NattyJen, but I probably simply didn’t notice. What are you referring to?
Excuse me. What I meant was Nathan and Jennifer were the couple where he cheated on her early in the relationship, well before they went on the show. I didn’t mean to imply they’d cheated in the race, and I don’t think they would.
I started watching TAR due to the wonderful threads on this board. I am now totally hooked and one of my life’s greatest disappointments is never to have heard “My ox is broken.”
It’s replacing Survivor on my must see TV list.
Thanks, I think.
As I think I’m the only person on this board who admitted to liking Colin and Christie, I still howled when he started crying and then screamed the famous line.
The show will probably never top season 5, but I’m really enjoying this season so far.
Outdoor Life Network (OLN) in Canada is showing re-runs of TAR, and is currenty on season 5. I think next week is the “my ox is broken” week. I can hardy wait.
Good episode…the gnome task wasn’t that irritating, so that didn’t bother me as much as in past seasons. I’m still pissed at myself for not buying the TWOP t-shirt that had “My Ox is Broken!” on it during that season. Stupid limited sales.
It really looked like that hair salon was much much harder to find than the bar. But props to The Grands for not panicing at the end and messing up the count. Keeping calm and collected directly helped them avoid elimination.
