Amazing Race 7: Starts 3/1!

I thought he told him that as well, but I couldn’t help thinking that if you don’t want people to know something about you, the best way to keep them from knowing is to not tell anyone!!!

I respect him for his willingness to risk his life to defend my country, but I have to say, he’s something of a dimbulb…

I noticed that. I was prepared to like him, but then he was all, “I’m a POW. When I win the million dollars I’m going to donate it to disabled vets. Did I mention I’m a POW?” And his little beauty pageant girlfriend? Puh-leese.

He lost whatever sympathy I had.

Well, it is hard to know what contextthe comment was made. For all we know he was asked, “So what’s your story?” or “What are you gonna do with the million bucks if you win?” The kind of small talk you might make waiting around in the airport.

Oh, goodness, no! Him telling Ray his story wasn’t the only reason I consider him a bit of a dimbulb. Not hardly…

Yeah, but I think I’m willing to cut him some slack here because it looked to me like the context of the conversation was edited out. What I infer is that Ray and Ron (the POW guy) were having a conversation about what they’d do with the cool million if they won. Ray sez he’ll spend it all on love beads and penis extensions, and then asks Ron what he’s gonna do.

And Ron sez, “Well, please don’t tell anyone, but I was a POW in Iraq, so because of that experience I’m gonna donate it all to such-and-such military charity.”

See, I think he wanted to legitimately answer the question, but if he’d neglected to talk about his POW status, he’d have to talk around it. I don’t see anything wrong with just saying: hey this is what happened, but I don’t like to talk about it a lot. That’s cool. Just sometimes mentioning the experience is unavoidable, which I think was the case here.

I assume it’s fairly widespread-- I watch the show in Manhattan.

They apparently distribute to all 50 states, but heck if I’ve ever heard of them before, either.

Would someone care to help me figure out why I loathed Boston Rob in his first Survivor appearance (misogynist pig) and despised both him and Amber in AllStars, yet I’m finding myself actually rooting for them? It’s bizarre. I have no explanation and can’t for the life of me figure out why, but there you have it – I was really disappointed when they didn’t come in first last night.

Accroding to that link, they don’t distribute to Texas or many other Western States. I’ve never heard of them either.

Someone help a stupid-head out. I FORGOT TO WATCH IT. Does anyone have a copy, or any locals have it Tivoed? I will be tidy and not smelly and say please and thank you a lot.

did anyone notice how the POW guy was standing during this conversation, with his leg spread out real wide? what does that body language imply?

Ummmm. . . jock itch?

Posing for a rock album cover?

Airing his nuts?

You know, I’m willing to bet he’s not sick to death of talking Survivor over a few beers at the local pub. He just seems like he could shoot that shit all the time.
I wanted to hate him as well, and while I’m still kind of annoyed that they even get to be on this after Amber won Survivor, I couldn’t help liking them a little. Maybe it’s because I’m from Boston as well and his accent is just so famil-yah.

I don’t understand some of the venom directed at Rob. He’s not stupid just because he speaks Bostonian. I think distinctions like “stupid but clever” are absolutely meaningless. It seems to me that, in competitions like these, the stupid people are the ones who relax their guard, attach unnecessary ethical significance, or underestimate their opponents. Rob is always playing the game. He plays fairly but opportunistically. He is constantly reassessing his position based on how he reads the current and past dynamics. He takes no one and nothing for granted. If ever there were an actual person who exemplifies that damnable word “proactive”, it is he. I like Rob. And I assure you he does not have “STUPID” written on his forehead.

Oh, and if I may vent one final point…

I don’t understand the point of view that Rob and Amber shoudn’t win because they don’t need the money. It isn’t a show about need. It isn’t “The Amazing Need”. It is a competition, and the winner should be the person who comes in first.

Well, I think the point of view is more nuanced than that, even if the nuance isn’t articulated. For example, I don’t recall anyone saying that Chip and Kim shouldn’t have won – even though their intro shot (nice house!) and bio (owning their own business) imply that they’re pretty well off. As another example, I don’t recall anyone criticising Jonathon (who appeared to be pretty well off also) for his wealth – unless you mean his wealth of unpleasant personality traits.

The criticism is more like “hey, they already had their chance – let someone else step forward.” The money’s just an added irritant: they already had their chance and won.

Note that I actually like Boston Rob, and if Rob and Amber win, it’ll be because they deserved to win – they will have outraced everyone else. It’s that very point which makes TAR superior to Survivor, in my opinion. In general, though, I have reservations about cross-casting, because it would be a shame to create a caste of reality-show famewhores that jumped from show to show. Who wants to watch The Apprentice: Amazing Racers Versus Survivor Castaways?

I don’t hate Rob because he’s stupid. I hate Rob because he seems to be of the opinion that he is infinitely smarter than anyone else on the face of the planet. It’s his unbearable sense of smugness. He’s a total “player,” as you said – and I loathe “players.” It’s a personal thing, but he just rubs me the wrong way. I also have an immense dislike for his use of the word “we” when referring to the Survivor: All-Stars win. He can rationalize any way he wants to, but the fact is that he, himself, did not actually win anything.

I beg to differ. All-Star was most definitely won by a team. If it weren’t for Rob, Ambuh would have been out of there before the merge, if not definitely after the tribe jumble. Only Lex’s misdirected sense of loyalty and Kathy’s warm fuzzy feelings for Rob kept her in, and Rob was absolutely central to that happening. He actually won it for her, because the only reason most of them voted for her was because of Rob’s manipulation (which, admit it, is what Survivor is all about, so their whining about it was kind of childish).

Plus, as second place winner, he did win a fair sum of money. What is it, something like $100,000?
