Amazing Race Oct 14th

No thread yet? Can that be?

I don’t have time to do the episode justice, but I’m very surprised no one is discussing it yet.

Well, that was an amazing (heh) competition to come in last, but sheer dumbness triumphed in the end.

I don’t understand why the gay farmer team finished after all the teams that picked the Lion Head, given that later the Teachers declared it was fast and easy and they should have chosen it first.

If there is already a thread on this episode, I couldn’t find it. I was pleasantly surprised that it aired on time, too.

My initial thoughts:

  1. Those dark-haired sisters are good. They were unlucky with a really bad driver in the first part of the leg, and managed to miss the first train by just a few seconds (apparently). Then, stuck with the “stragglers” they really blew past them all to finish first within that group. They’ll be back near the top next week.

  2. The blonde friends. On the train they said something about beating the rest of their group on the train because they were so much better than the rest of them, and I said to my wife “I guess we know who will be in last place now.” They blamed it on their driver but if they hadn’t wasted so much time looking for the U-Turn it wouldn’t have come down to that last minute detour on the way to the Pit Stop.

  3. Those substitute teachers seem like nice guys, but they are not good racers. But twice in a row they have been very lucky ones. My prediction: next week they come in last but get saved by the first NEL. (I was mildly surprised that it was not an NEL this week).
ETA: Well crap, one minute late. Can a mod please merge this with the other TAR thread?

I thought the same thing – I came over here looking for a thread, and there wasn’t any…???

I cannot imagine having to carry one of those lion head masks with my teeth. What was it one of the farmers (I think) was saying about tasting X number of germs on it? I’d think somebody would disinfect them, but perhaps not

Can I say right now that the Chippendales are getting on my nerves? There’s something about them that rubs me the wrong way.

I felt bad for the eliminated team. Why didn’t it occur to them to ditch their driver and get another “taxi” (I don’t remember the name of the bicycle contraption)?

How many second chances are Gary and Will going to get and still keep up their pessimistic outlook? They had me (almost) rooting for Caitlin and Brittany whose behavior is reprehensible regarding having everyone cater to their English-only mantra.

Natalie and Nadiya are still my favorites. I loved how X (not sure which is which) was motivated when her sister was yelling at her during the dish challenge. If ever there was a strength in this race, doing BETTER when your teammate is yelling at you has to be near the top.

Rob and Kelley using the U-Turn… I hate to say it but good for them. It is a game and it is using these stupid things. Having them use it only makes sense since it was neck and neck. I’m surprised other teams didn’t use it, especially since it was anonymous.

Maybe it’s the fact that they keep mentioning without any real need for context what their job is. Maybe the interviewers are prompting it, but it is irritating.

Yeah, that’s the moment that they lost me as a potential supporter. * He doesn’t speak a **word *of English!!! No shit. Do you speak a word of Bahasa Indonesia??

Merged two threads about the episode.

I was somewhat dissatisfied with this episode. I found it sort of boring; neither challenge was very interesting to me, nor did it seem that any kind of skill or better game-play would yield a faster completion of the tasks. Yet another episode where contestants’ placements at the finish line were dependant far more on the adroitness of their public transportation than anything else. Cases-in-point: both pairs of sisters were adversely affected by their respective drivers’ incompetence.

I also was surprised more teams did not opt for the egg-head task over the lion-head task, as (suspected by me, and mentioned by the teachers) the costume-wearing/carrying was physically taxing, and the sitting-still-then-getting-a-meal was almost a reward, by contrast.

I also liked how one of the racers called the buff guys “chipmunks” hehe

And yet another meh, episode. I was doing stuff at the end I was so bored. I didn’t even watch the previews for next week. I really hope they pick it up as I haven’t been impressed at all this season yet.

While the “English motherfucker! Do you speak it?” moment was pretty terrible, my wife noticed that all the other cabbies in the area (there had to be four or five) definitely understood English and weren’t translating for this guy because they wanted to see if he could get 50.

Getting really annoyed with the Chipmunks, especially James. Or Jaymes. Whichever one won’t shut the fuck up. Have we heard two words out of his partner, Jaymes (or James)? And buddy, you’re not 6’4". That might be what you have on your Chipmunks bio, but you’re closer to 6’.

As much as I can’t stand the shrieking of Nat & Nad, they’re a fun team, they’re strong racers, and they have a good attitude. They’re not afraid to get dirty (one of them had her long hair in the fish bucket, and then slipped on fish guts and fell on her ass & laughed about it) and I think they’re in it for the long haul.

My DVR stopped recording 5 minutes before the end of the episode, right in the middle of the becak race. I take it Tall and Short won and the blondes got eliminated?

The blondes won the becak race and then their driver went left at the fork. T&S went right and it turns out that was the correct turn. T&S also paid their driver while they were still moving and well if the increase in speed was anything to go by. Smart play too bad they don’t show any real drive.

The eliminated blondes were not sisters, IIRC, but best friends. Justin_Bailey, I have to admit that I was paying less attention by that point in the episode. I somehow thought they had more than one “English, NOW!” moment, but I guess I can understand some frustration if it was in reaction to being swindled.

I agree about the egg task. I love me some scrambled eggs with Sriacha, and while I don’t like risking having my head engulfed in flames, not do I like carrying unhygienic and heavy items with my teeth.

I was also surprised it wasn’t an NEL this week. My daughter actually high-fived me when the girls got eliminated. It was worth it for that.

I don’t like Mutt and Jeff, or at least whichever is the tall one. Mutt? Jeff? I am still in the GTKY stage of keeping track of teams.

Note to self: If ever on a reality racing show, NEVER state something like “People underestimate me because I’m (blonde, short, tall, old, young, a leprechaun, a mutant), but I’m really smart!” as that is always the kiss of death.

One of the two blondes (the hotter of the two, naturally) had a really nasty, entitled attitude, and I think her quote was something close to “I can’t believe these people; I mean they live here in this country and don’t even bother to learn English!” which sounded like something she had said more than once in her lifetime, including probably when trying to buy more beer at the mercado in Cancun on Spring Break…

That was the chippendale guys. (The gay farmers did the egg one.)

The only thing that bugs me about them is their confessionals, where they constantly talk over each other. Drives me up a wall, to the point where if they keep doing it I will hate them almost as much as I hate the Sri Lankan sisters.

Thanks! That’s one screeching team down. Now we only have to endure the Sri Lankan twins screeching their way to the mat. If only one of the teams in the top group had the foresight to U-turn them, maybe the twins would have been elimnated, too. (Probably not, but one can dream.)

I agree that Tall & Short are entirely too pessimistic. I’ve seen eliminated teams that were happier than them, who are still in the race for some reason. They’re supposed to have applied to TAR seven times previously; I think the producers finally included them to just show that running the race is vastly different from watching it.

I call them Team Quitter, and had a good laugh at their expense this episode with all their proclamations about how they have heart and never quit. Dude, you flat-out quit last week in the market when you pouted “I’m not running” at the end to find Phil. Then more of that trademarked pouting this episode with your slow bike cab thing.
