I’m enjoying it. I’ve seen it compared to The Big Lebowski. I’m not sure I agree with that. The protagonist is an amiable slacker who is definitely reminiscent of Lebowski but the plot is completely different.
I’m hoping that the writers have some idea where they’re going and not just throwing random mysteries at us.
Yes, we’re watching it. We’ve been reminded of The Big Lebowski as well. I think it’s the amiable, aimless, bearded surfer thing. I have some thoughts on the story.
OK to discuss specifics in the thread or should I spoiler box?
Overall, I would say it’s grown on me. I wasn’t so sure I liked it after the first episode. It improves.
We’ve seen the first two episodes, and have the third on our DVR. From the promos we were expecting it to be more of a straight-up comedy, but it’s enjoyable enough so far. I feel like they’re still setting up the story at this point.
I suppose we should spoiler it. Especially since anyone who has AMC Premium (not me) can binge the whole season right now and could easily ruin it for the rest of us.
Don’t read this if you haven’t seen episode 3.I’ve had the impression from the beginning that there are deeper darker things about the lodge that these people who treat it as a social club don’t realize. The hidden room with the body would seem to go along with that.
The ‘similar to The Big Lebowski’ come-on seems a bit off-base to me, but building a viewership for an original-concept show is a challenge, so I can understand them using the comparison even if it’s not really close.
At this point I’m wondering if Dud ever left Nicaragua. (I won’t spoiler that because it will be sufficiently obscure to most readers of this thread.)
In one of the earlier episodes Ernie (the acting head of the lodge and plumbing salesman) called HQ for the fraternal order in the UK to report the change in leadership. At first, it seemed like headquarters was just some guy in his living room, but then he went down to report to someone else about the change, and went through a weird ritual involving a blindfold, just to walk down the hall. And we never saw the person to whom he reported. There’s definitely more going on here than first appears.
And I agree that I hope there’s some plan and not just throwing plot elements at a wall.
Edited to add, I appreciate that it’s a fun show. Many of these shows are dramatic, serious or otherwise downers. USA Networks cancelled all of its “blue sky” shows in favor of more serious stuff like Mister Robot.
I think there’s something supernatural and/or sinister going on with the “real” lodge. The call to London that resulted in the blindfolded walk - which was ludicrous, because it was a straight hallway with doors - the references to the other lodge, punching Dud in the face, the secret room with the body. I’m thinking Dud is the anointed one or something like that, and the guy who keeps having strokes doesn’t want him around.
I also think the sister is going to skedaddle with all of the cash, leaving Dud to deal with the mess.
I’m wondering if Captain is the Lodge Master? I’m not at all sure on that one. I do think he’s someone we’ve met.
The speech in church was Dude-like, I have to say, or crazy. One of those.
Did you pick up on who the actor is who is playing Dud? Spoiler it just in case someone doesn’t know.
Can we please mention outside of the spoiler box the episode that we’re spoiling? I hate looking at a spoiler box and wondering if I dare click on it. It kills the whole point of hiding spoilers!
Sherrerd, just because you think it’s obscure doesn’t mean you shouldn’t spoiler it. You may be further along than others.
Okay, I shall box from now on. (Still don’t think my earlier speculation spoils anything, but then I’ve seen only three episodes so far–I’m watching as they are broadcast.)
This sounds like a good idea to me but some people may have AMC Premium and we can’t really stop them. Hopefully they’ll respect our wishes, or at the very least use spoilers with warnings.
Sounds good to me. As I said, I’m watching episodes as they air on AMC. I haven’t seen anything that hasn’t yet aired (nor read about anything that hasn’t aired, for that matter).
Speculating about future plot developments is part of the fun of talking about a show on a forum, but of course if the entire show is available somewhere, that complicates matters. So I won’t even speculate outside of a box, either, going forward.
It seemed like they’d explained away the last bit of potential woo by saying that the land under Orbis was so toxic it could cause hallucinations; but then Blaise found that secret panel with the alchemical equipment and apparent gold dust, and the London headquarters seems concerned about the supposed scrolls, so who knows?
Hopefully the saving of the lodge is real this time and won’t be yanked away from us again.
I’m a little confused about Ernie and the trapdoor. Was he at home or in the lodge when he found it? How can it lead to some guy’s trailer? Is he hallucinating? And was that Cheech Marin?
I don’t think they’re going to kill off the main protagonist so I’m assuming that Dud will survive the shark attack. Dud’s sister is frustratingly self destructive, although she apparently did manage to talk her way out of debt. If only things were that easy in real life!
