American film being shot in Sydney today?

A couple of blocks in York Street in Sydney are closed off today (Saturday) for a film crew. There are lots of extras milling around and the props all have a distinctly foreign (i.e. American) look about them:

  • New York “style” taxis;
  • left-hand drive cars with number plates emblazoned “Metropolis - the First State” etc

Some of the crew were wearing T-shirts saying Red Sun. Does anyone know whether this is the name of an upcoming film?

It’s the movie Superman Returns:

Thanks. Disappointing that it’s just another formulaic Hollywood flic. If my bus has to be diverted, it could at least be for something interesting.

It could be interesting – they’re doing a Superman movie from scratch (ignoring the ones that have already been made) and it’s being directed by Bryan Singer of X-men fame.

Argh! But it’s Superman! Don’t you realise how incredibly cool this is?

Sydney gets to have The Matrix movies, the Star Wars movies, and now Superman.

What does Melbourne get? Charlotte’s Web and Ghost Rider. :dubious:

If they’re ignoring the ones that have already been made, why is it called “Superman Returns”?

I don’t know. But they’re doing it as an origin movie so I can’t see how it could be a follow on.

From the link above:

“In this semi-sequel to the first two “Superman” films, the classic hero returns to Earth after having been missing for six long years.”

It’s not an origin movie. It’s set after the first two movies, but I think Supes is going to be younger. The soundtrack will be based on the John Williams original, most other elements will echo the other movies, but it’s something of a secret as to how all that will manifest.

Well that’s good to know: the first two Superman movies were really good, plus who doesn’t know his origin?

Whoa!

There really was no Superman 3 and 4!

There was an article in yesterday’s paper about the filming. Apparently well have to put up with another weekend’s worth of traffic diversions because of the stupid thing.

What the hell?

I’m checking to see if Jon Peters is still attached to this movie, but I hope they don’t go with the crap I put in bold. No suit? No FLYING? What. The HELL?

I can’t find Jon Peters in the credits. Is he still with this project?

This is all new. McG was signed on to direct for ages, and Nicolas Cage as Supes, and then they got rid of them (because it would’ve been a disaster) and when Bryan Singer came on board he totally started all production from scratch again.

Supes definitely flies and wears the suit. Check out this official preproduction site with details.
