American Idol 2/17-18

Oh. I thought the wild card was the person who wasn’t the top of their gender, but was otherwise the top vote-getter, and I was wondering how they were going to get to twelve.

So when are they going to announce the wild card picks?

I agree that Anoop fell down last night, but Sarver wasn’t any better. In terms of pure singing, Tatania was better than either of them.

I believe you have it correct. They picked the top girl, top guy and of the 10 that are left the person with the most votes. That’s three people. They have three sets of twelve for a total----nevermind.

From wiki
This season will feature for the first time 36 semifinalists with 12 different semifinalists performing every Tuesday. The male, female, and the next top vote getter with the highest number of America’s votes will make it into the top 12. This season will also feature the return of the Wildcard round last used in Season 3 with the judges choosing three eliminated contestants to advance to the finals.

So, yeah, when do the bring back the wildcards, and how far back do they go? Is it one person from each group, can they go back to people that didn’t make it to this round?

There will be three wildcards, but did they ever say that there would be one wildcard from each group? Couldn’t they pick two (or even all three) wildcards from one group if they wanted to?

I’m thinking Tatiana might make a comeback. She did a helluva job last night, but there’s just a little too much crazy in there to really make it as a big time star. And seeing as how she didn’t melt down as much as I assume they thought she would, let’s see if she’ll be worse next time. It would certainly up the ratings.

All this time, I’ve been thinking that each judge picks one wildcard. I just realized that there’s three slots but four judges. :smack:

I’m very disappointed in Tatiana’s reaction. I wanted more hysterics and sobbing and screaming dammit.

I don’t really care about any of them, but I have a couple of general comments.

First, I thought it was really quite rude the way they kept egging Tatiana on, trying to get her to be ‘crazy’. “C’mon, give us the crazy laugh!” “You’re too restrained tonight!” “This is weird! Where’s the other Tatiana? Come on, give it up!” Clearly, the producers were looking for some exciting mental instability, and she disappointed them.

And I say that as someone who absolutely despises Tatiana.

The other comment is I’m glad Simon is finally calling out the band for their insipid, bland arrangements! They take every bloody song that comes along and turn it into elevator music. They played the Police song in straight time. Last season I wanted to kill them when they arranged “Michelle” by the Beatles into some kind of godawful 4/4 dirge. These guys should be backing up Lawrence Welk, even though he’s dead, and not playing on a show where they are actually trying to branch out into rock and reggae and other genres.

If there’s a God, and he runs the programming at Fox, He’d fire the band and go hire the House Band from Rockstar Supernova. Then even if the singer sucked we could still be entertained by some fantastic music.

Really, heavily disappointed that Ruffneck went through. I liked both Anoop and the black guy (Steve) way, way better.

I agree that Danny Deadwife is a cocky, jerky douche with a Messiah complex. He just makes me feel so icky now, and I really liked him at first. I’ve known too many of that Christan Vanilla type, and they always turn out to be more judgmental and hateful than everyone else. YMMV

I have a new favorite - Alexis. I can’t stand most of the successful female singers on this show, because they’re so “packaged” as Kara would put it (and what was up with that? God forbid someone be unique or ::shudder:: not a total babe). Alexis seems genuine and has a lot of humility. Plus, she’s got some real edge without being kooky.

Yes! House Band was fantastic. They should be touring.

(I miss that show deeply. AI is a pale shadow of the first season of Rock Star.)

I couldn’t agree more. It was icky how they were poking at Tatiana. You’d think after having one deranged fan lose the plot they’d be careful about this. I don’t think she has the mental constitution to deal with another rejection, so that should be it for Tatiana. That having been said, she was easily the #2 female last night.

I wonder if Ricky Minor was looking to kick Simon’s ass last night? House Band was brilliant!

fingers crossed for Noop Dawg

I think the way they pick the top 3 pretty much sucks. Assume the top 4 vote getters are all guys. The’ll pick the top guy to fill the guy slot, then they’ll move all the way down to the 5th best person to fill the girl slot, then back up to the 2nd best overall vote-getter to fill the 3rd slot. So the 3rd and 4th best overall vote getters go home, even though they actually got more votes than any of the girls.

Why does gender have to trump the actual favorites of the voters? Stupid.

Just caght up with the show last night, so I’m a litte late to the thread. Just wanted to chime in and say that Dio and I are on exactly the same page for the enter night, but especially about Tatianna.

I was ready to blow up my TV when they put her through to the final 36, but the judges really just pulled their pants down on national television. Their entire critique was an admission that she only got through because of the drama, and that her talent had nothing to do with it.

Anybody else does that performance and they are hailed as the best of the night. She really did a damn good job.

“caght”? “enter”?

I need more coffee.

They did the Wild Card the first two seasons and they could pick on from, as my sister says, my mother’s ass if they want. In other words, it doesn’t even have to be from the top 36! In season 2 they had Carmen Rasmussen, known on these boards as Goat Girl for her out of control vibrato, who never even made it to Hollywood.

Hey, at least they’re getting better. In previous seasons, even if every guy were a better singer than every girl, half of the Top 12 would still be girls. This time they’re only forcing 1/3rd of the Top 12 to be potentially inferior.

However, I do agree – it’s ridiculous that there are any guy/girl requirements. Just put the best singers through, regardless of gender.

I was under the impression that there would be a Wild Card round – that there would be a 4th round of wildcards, that the public would vote on – some based on votes, some chosen by the judges. Am I mistaken?

When Ryan said that only 20,000 votes separated Roughneck and Anoop, I think (mathematically) he indirectly let it be known that Anoop was in 4th place.

Not necessarily fourth place. He could have been third but because they needed a girl Alexis got to go through.

Good point. I think either way that Anoop is a lock for a wild card spot.
