American Idol - 3/15 & 3/16

Sorry, that wasn’t the intent.

The MSN poll surprises me a little. I’ve been assuming that it’s going to come down to Bo and Nadia in the final 2 but Anwar seems to be polling higher than Nadia and Carrie is about equal with her. I’m not surprised that Anwar would poll well, he has a high likability factor as well as smooth performing chops and good looks but is Carrie really that popular?

I wonder if she’s pulling in older votes from country fans or something.

I’m also surprised that Vonzell is only at 1% in the poll. I thought she would likely make it to the top 5.

And Connie is more popular than Federov? That surprises me too.

The white woman, black man, black woman, needs a white man theory is interesting. It would explain the judges, particularly Simon, leading the cheerleading for Bo. I’m going to be the dissenter, at least on this board, when it comes to Bo. Great voice. His version of “Tied to the Whipping Post” ranked with some of the best AI performances ever. But I don’t find him appealing. To me he’s too old, too retro, and almost as smarmy as Constantine. But at least Connie knows he’s being that way. It’s a half serious, half kidding, sort of thing.

And as far as the MSNBC poll goes…

Vonzell is lost in the shuffle. Not bad, not great, just there. It’s the same with most of the others, except for the top four. Bo, Nadia, Carrie, and Anwar are the only ones in double digits.

Constantine or Scott might be able to break the hold the top four have, because they are the only ones that seem get a reaction, whether it’s good or bad. But I doubt it they will.

I see it this way –

  1. Anwar

  2. Nadia

  3. Nikko

  4. Anthony

  5. Carrie

  6. Constantine

  7. Vonzell

  8. Bo

  9. Jessica

  10. Scott

11 Mikhala

Its nice to know their personal stories.

I see the top six as Anwar, Nadia, Bo, Carrie, Scott and Constantine.
At that point the non-Constantine votes will consolidate enough to outvote the Constantine groupies. Scott will also go.
Leaving the top four: Anwar, Nadia, Bo and Carrie.
After that, I can’t predict. It’s beyond me why everyone assumes Carrie will make it that far, but the assumption itself will carry her.

So in the next five weeks, we’ll lose (in my predicted order): Mikala, Vonzell, Jessica, Anthony, Nikko.

I think Scott’s praying is endearing because it seems natural, he’s under a huge microscope, knows he’s a (chubby) underdog, and doesn’t have the stage presence of others. He’s a natural, vocally, and a pleasure to listen to. Odd how Reuben was a lovable teddy bear, but Scott a fat guy “who looks ridiculous dancing.”

When you look ahead and make predictions for the latter rounds, you have to consider how the attitudes about singers change over time. At one point last season, George Huff looked ready to run away with it. John Stevens once (on Country night) got the highest number of votes (the only night they announced who did so), and was the last contestant to be in the bottom 3, even though he is now a byword for in-over-his-head AI finalist. Early on, LaToya looked ready to run away with it, but didn’t make the final 3. It wasn’t until a few weeks in that Fantasia emerged as the frontrunner, and even then, she was in the bottom 3 once or twice.

That being said, here are my predictions…

I don’t know what’s not to get about Mikahla and Vonzell being low on the MSNBC poll. Mikahla has not been that good, and the people who like her are the ironic types (“she’s what AI deserves”) who don’t vote. Vonzell is the one most people would forget if asked cold to name all 11 remaining finalists. She’s boring and forgettable. This is especially true for gossippy Internet types who vote in those polls. They will be the next two eliminated unless somebody has a REALLY bad night.

I didn’t really notice Scott’s prayers, so they don’t bother me. He doesn’t have a prayer, though. He lacks the cuddliness of Ruben to make up for his… you know.
I do think Nikko is a strong contestant for his song choices and sense of style, but his actual vocals have been a bit spotty. I don’t think he’ll pull it together in time. I think they’ll be the first two men to go.

Jessica will go somewhere in there, too.

Final 6 (and a nightmare for the group song coreographers, who want Male/Female pairs): Bo, Connie, Anwar, Anthony, Carrie, Nadia.

Anthony is not Clay or even John Stevens. Eventually people will realize that he doesn’t have “nerd charm,” and that his song choices are horrible and dull.

I see Bo as this year’s LaToya – an experienced singer who seems like a frontrunner early simply because of his confidence, but in time will wear thin. I actually think Constantine will outlast Bo. Connie will get better, and Bo will not.

At some point there will have to be an unspeakable outrage. Anwar is clearly the most knowledgeable and classiest contestant, so he would be the best bet to get knocked off before his time and generate the inevitable news stories and blog rants about how the show is broken.

Final 3: Carrie, Nadia, and Connie.

Carrie and Nadia will have record deals, and go gracefully. Connie will win the prize, and millions will hurl. We’ll all wonder once again why we watch this goddamned show, but we’ll tune in again next season anyway.

That’s my prediction. But I’ve just been out for sushi and drank a lot of sake.

sake toome! That was quite coherant (except for the fantasizing about Connie) considering the sushi. The real scandal should be that they have just recently decided to start drilling Anwar!

The best prediction yet.

That’s why I was pulling for Mario…get a Spanish person in there for the first time.
