American Idol - 3/15 & 3/16

First off, Lindsey Cardinale is a class act. I think all future AI contestants should be made to watch the last few minutes of last night’s elimination show as a how-to for how to act when you are eliminated.

I thought the group performance was dreadful. Every singer seemed to miss the first one or two notes in what was about a six-note part.

What was up with the lights on the contestants’ faces when Ryan was reading their judges’ comments? They totally freaked me out. It made everyone look like they had three faces. I felt like I was on the scary ride in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Even Anwar looked scary!

I’m definitely pulling for Bo and Nadia. This is my first season to watch AI, and I am loving the ride. Sure, it’s cheesy - but great entertainment!

I heard on the radio that Bo sang “Spinning Wheel” with his band, that’s why he sounded “like he’s been doing it for twenty years.”

Also on the same radio station, they call Constantine “butt chin.” Makes me LOL every time. I’m tempted to call in and tell them y’all’s nickname for him, Smarmy McSmirkovitch.

But you’d think music teacher Anwar would know better. As you say, it’s a common problem. It’s almost as if someone in the process is advising the contestants to sing in a lower key than they really should be singing in. But then why don’t the contestants realize in rehearsal that they have a problem?
It was a problem for over half of the contestants in the group sing.

Lindsey has been decent in the past, but she got torpedoed because her performance Tuesday was waaaaaay bad. “Pitchy” doesn’t begin to describe it. It was like she was singing in a different key from the band, or maybe she wasn’t singing in any key at all. If the song has a melody you wouldn’t know it from her rendition. Whatever it was, she was doing it on purpose because she did it exactly the same way for the sing-out.

I wonder how the contestants feel about the sing-outs. I generally like them. For anyone serious about a music career, any chance to perform on national television is not to be missed. It can be a chance to say, “I may have lost the vote, but look how good I am.” However, Lindsey’s sing-out reinforced the vote, and Mikalalahahamatata will be just as bad.

Definitely saw a look of some significance between them when she was declared safe.

I am surprised Nikko wasn’t in the bottom, but I guess maybe he had a resurgence in support since he came back on surprise. Like many others, I wish you could vote for who you want gone. Much more satisfying to imagine voting against one of these hideousnesses than for someone.

I think Scott has a great voice, and I’m a fan, but I find his his on-screen praying when he learns he’s safe to be offensive. Okay, I’m an atheist, but if I did believe in God, I would find it hard to believe that God cares who the next American Idol is (or who wins the Super Bowl or Miss America, etc).
Some questions for Scott:
Is the final ranking of the contestants also the ranking of their worthiness in God’s eyes? Did God give Rasheeda a cold because he wanted to keep her out of the semi-finals? If God is choosing the winner, is he doing it by phoning in votes, or is he using the fingers and phones of us humans? If so, what happened to free will? If God’s choosing the next AI, you don’t really need my votes, do you?

I think Scott’s very public prayers of thanks are a weirdo way of drawing attention to himself. His personal relationship with God is his business. Making a big deal of drawing attention to it is IMHO inappropriate.

Jessica’s grandmother or whoever that was needs to calm down. Lindsey deserved to be voted out, and I’ve no complaints about those three getting the fewest votes.

Here’s what I think should happen for one of the theme nights: We–the loyal viewers and voters–have the opportunity to vote for one of three songs for each contestant to sing. These can fit into the parameters of a theme to make selection easier. I’m not sure how exactly to decide on the three potential songs: should the contestant pick three? The producers? But I think this would be a great way to make the competition more interesting.

And I’m dying to hear Bo sing “All Along The Watchtower.”

Lindsey picked Eddie Floyd’s ‘Knock on Wood’, in my list of Top 10 Best Songs Ever – and then she sang the insipid disco cover arrangement. For this sin she deserved banishment.

Since we’re to page 4 anyway, I’ll pursue your hijack.

I agree it’s irritating when a winning team gives credit to God, as if they’ve somehow been found more deserving and therefore were blessed with a win. That strikes me as the height of arrogances and I’m reminded of Rhett Butler’s phrase “God’s on the side of the stronger army.”

But if you reject the Biblical descriptions of God as a literal “being” (as we generally reject the Biblical descriptions of natural phenomena in favor of evolution), and instead posit “God” as a positive force on which we might draw when struggling, then it makes sense to offer a prayer of thanks. Making a deposit in the positive force bank, as it were.

Offering that prayer publicly — meh. Not my bag, personally, but it’s not offensive to me when someone else does it.

That’s praying? I’m an agnostic who leans toward atheism (go ahead and try to prove there’s a God-- I dare ya!) and I do that hands clasped together, looking up gesture all the time. Surely it’s a holdover from my evil Catholic days but now it is just an expression of relief. I suppose I could just do an exaggerated wipe sweat off brow type dealie but I don’t because-- well-- I don’t. I never thought it would offend my theist friends because-- well-- I didn’t.

Mostly I don’t think they notice or care.

In their profiles, it says Bo prays before performing(on tv). How many of the contestants claim to be christian anyway?

It’s not necessarily a prayer of thanks that God chose you and not, say, Lindsey, to continue the AI “journey”. It can simply be an acknowledgement that all good things come from God. Of course I don’t know what Scott feels about it, but that is one possibility.

From the contestants’ profiles on IdolFox, the following say that they pray before a performance and/or would thank God first if they won (usually both): Anwar, Bo, Carrie, Mikalah, Nadia, Nikko. Scott, and Vonzell. Actually, Nikko said he would thank Jesus. Mikalah appears to be Catholic (has a rosary). Jessica mentions that she first sang in church, but makes no further religious references. Constantine admits that he owns Madonna’s “like a Virgin” album, but that probably doesn’t count.

Two of the three lowest vote getters do not mention God in their profiles. Coincidence??? :dubious:

I don’t see how it’s your business how Scott expresses his relationship with God. I think it’s kinda of nice to see someone thank God without forcing his/her beliefs on others. It’s not like he’s speaking in tongues or rolling around on the ground.

And I saw Anthony’s hands in a prayer pose on last week’s results show, just before he was declared safe.

Anything that makes a viewer like or dislike a contestant is “her business.” The way he expresses his religion is as much her business as the way he looks in suede. We talk about all sorts of facets of the contestants that would be our business if they were simply shmoes on the street.

As good as the rumors about Mario are, this seems more likely to be true.

Jessica is very close to her Grandmother. Probably because her Mom is dead. The Tampa Fox reporter that is covering Jessica’s story reported that Jessica was extremely worried upon hearing that Grandma fell and dislocated her shoulder earlier this week. Grandpa (who is 79) just took his FIRST airplane flight to see Jessica sing on stage. As a person who never knew her Grandpa and lost her Grandma very young, I think that’s cool.

Me too! Me too!

I’m not the only one to notice Scott’s conspicuous praying. This link is to an MSNBC article.

The showy praying reminds me of people I used to see on the bus, who’d get on carrying Bibles and sit there moving their lips in prayer, occasionally looking around to check if anyone was watching. There’s a difference between being religious and being a religious weirdo. I don’t think Scott can afford to be seen as a religious weirdo.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Mario thing plays out. The star-maker machinery could easily turn him into the next Menudo. I hope he makes it, but I’d hate to see him exploited into nothing but a boy toy.

The MSNBC poll currently has Mikala with 3% and Vonzell with only 1%. I just don’t get it.

Well, now I feel like the asshole. Good to know.

Those MSN results reflect my daughter’s feelings. She says the next AI has to be a white guy because it was white girl, black guy, black girl-- it’s white guy’s turn and Bo is the best white guy.
