This is one of the things I love about this board. I get up in the morning ready to post and try to add something, and as usual you guys have pretty much nailed it down. But what the hell.
Last night the first 10 performances were as the judges said; safe with no real risk. But then Latoya just tore it up. Then I thought poor Amy; she has to follow that. And talk about rising to the occasion. My choice as number one from last night.
Top three last night
Amy
Latoya
George
Bottom three last night
John Stevens
Camille
Jasmine
kevja’s overall
Latoya – I like everything about her. Just keep going! I picture her winning.
Amy – Last night was great. If her performances stay consistent, she may make it to the final four. Great personality.
George – Count me in as one of the people who want to see him succeed. Good voice. And how could anyone not like this guy?
Jennifer – I hope she can hang around for a few weeks. She’s working on getting better each week.
Jasmine – Weak last night, but she’s got the voice and look. She’ll be around for a while.
Diana – ditto Jasmine
Matt – That’s not a smile, it’s smirk. But despite that, I still like him
Jon Peter – As Simon said, he has a weird voice. Not bad, just weird. If he could “find himself” as a
performer, he may end up in the final four
Camille – Might have another week. More beauty than talent.
Fantasia – Stop the “diva thing” now. And besides, Diva’s are bitchy in the privacy of their dressing room, not on stage.
Jon Stevens – As they said last night – love him or hate him. I don’t hate him, but the comparisons to Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra are ridiculous. At best he’s a 16 year old Steve Lawrence. A pleasant singer who stands in front of a microphone in business suit and sings pleasantly for an hour. Usually works for a strong band leader, who drop him like a hot potatoes if he gets demanding.
Apparently I’m the only one who didn’t think LaToya was all that last night, so I’m putting myelf out there in preparation to be whipped senseless. I just thought it was a poor song choice. I didn’t like it when Josh Gracin sang it last year either. And I just happen to love this song. However, in a competition where people are supposed to show their range and vocal ability, I think “Ain’t Goin’ Down” is a poor choice. All LaToya had to do was sing the same few notes the entire song and then hit some high, over-done notes at the end. Not impressed.
Now Amy Adams blew me away. And I haven’t been an Amy fan until now. But holy crap, she nailed that song! One of my earlier criticisms of Amy was that she wimped out on the high notes, but on this one she really gave them some power, yet she didn’t have to scream a la Diana and LaToya either.
*Covers head with hands, prepared for barrage of stones.
No, you aren’t. I thought she was off by 2-3 beats throughout most of the song. I also thought she sounded like she was running out of air. I couldn’t believe the judges didn’t notice.
No stones from me. I agree with you about LaToya, too. In fact, her tempo was off for a whole bunch of measures early on. She and her backing vocals had this mismatched rhythm and staccato. I thought it was pretty weak. And frankly, how that performance could have been the one Simon had “been waiting for” is remarkable, considering that he “hated” Amy’s song and doesn’t understand the genre and both songs were similar, with Amy being the superior performer.
Someone needs to tell Fantasia that bitching at someone for saying she has no class is NOT CLASSY! Way to prove Simon’s point! I hate this girl, and I don’t even care how she sings. Her attitude is terrible, and she just makes me want to turn off the TV whenever she’s on screen. Although I do hate her voice too, spoken and singing. She’s just terrible.
Sadly, I missed most of the show thanks to a friend calling me right at the beginning of it, but I did manage to catch that, so it’s really the only comment I have to make!
I say somewhere in an earlier post that I wasn’t all that taken w/La Toya’s performance, mostly for song choice. In fact, I haven’t really liked any of her song choices that much… I just like her on a personal level and think she’s a quality/pro singer.
I think Simon realizes his celebrity is based on his ‘critiques’. Being always contrary (and getting booed) makes for better ratings. A few good critiques and a lot of bad ones.
Maybe it’s because he heard it last year (LaToya’s song, that is)?
Gotta call bullshit on this one. Yeah, Matt didn’t have a great performance, but it was miles ahead of Camille. I’m really going to miss him. No, he wouldn’t have made it past the top five or six, but his personality made the show so much more entertaining. Oh well…loved the way he went out, though.
I tivo’ed the show and lost the last few seconds. What happened after Matt started singing to Simon? That was a great way to go out and makes me like him even more.
There’s just no accounting for the tastes of the voting public! ITA with your post. Matt’s departure was the Class Act of all the American Idol series to date! He’ll be OK. But what’s it going to take to get that awful Camile out of there?
He put Simon’s name in the song–“Simon, when our eyes meet” IIRC, and walked over to the judges…and then my tape ends. Somebody fill us in on the rest, please!
I admit that I found Matt to be completely annoying – okay, okay, you played football, we get it already! – but I still think he was the worst last night, though Camille was pretty weak. I don’t think she had as many ear-torturing flat notes as he produced, though.
I turned it off when he started singing to Simon. I couldn’t take it. Nonetheless, I wish him well. As long as he’s well off my TV.
