American Idol 3/23/04: Country Music

Hmmm…I guess I always just assumed that those last two were the 3rd and 4th lowest vote getters but I guess I don’t know that for sure. Maybe I’m talking out of my ass.

Does anybody else know?

I wish we could see the complete rankings instead of just knowing who’s not in the bottom 3.

Skutirette when told Matt was booted: “Yay! Yay! Yay!”

Being the person who has to wait out the commercial but isn’t in the bottom 3 does not mean she was the fourth-lowest. She could have been #1, #8, or anything in between. Aside from the bottom 3 we are not privy to rankings.

Many times in the past the “fakeout” person was one of the super-popular ones.

I think Diana suffered more for going first and being out of people’s minds by the time it came to vote. She wasn’t bad but it wasn’t as outstanding as last week so people forgot about her. Also, I think there were probably a lot of people voting for Jennifer and Amy this week to make sure they didn’t hit the bottom 3 again.

I am not sad to see Matt go, he would have been my next choice to leave, but frankly Camille’s performances have been the worst and she should have been the one to leave this week. I think she is only hanging on, either because all of Hawaii is voting for her or she has the vulnerable scared puppy dog thing going for her, or both.

No, not a good idea. People are already throwing votes towards people who’ve been in the previous week’s bottom three. If they knew all the rankings, they might start withholding votes from people they think should be knocked down a peg. Or they’d think, “Well, s/he was #1 last week, so they don’t need my vote”.

I wasn’t Matt’s biggest fan either, but I sure thought he’d be around a few more weeks. You know what this means, don’t you? We’ve got to hear Camille again!

What made me sad is Matt was so good humored about being booted and Camille was just a friggin’ sour puss the entire show.

I think she knew she was going to go and was just resigned to it but unable to put a brave face on it. When Matt got the boot I think she felt guilty, it’s hard to look happy when someone else just took a bullet for you.
For those who asked what happened after Matt started singing to Simon, not much happened. He walked off the stage to the judges, put his hand on Simon’s cheek for a moment, Simon smiled, Simon and Paula snuggled and Randy jumped up and waved his arms around. The audience cheered him, it looked like he got a standing O (but they may have just wanted to see what Simon did), then the rest of the finalists came down and stood with him.

If Amy wasn’t voted as a bottom three, then I’m a little pissed off about her being including. I consider her to be vulnerable, and I would rather have seen someone like Fantasia put with the other two.

To clarify, Matt, Camille and Diana were the bottom three. Amy was the last of the non-bottom-three to be declared safe.

What bugs me is the people who, after criticism from Simon, say “Well, you just haven’t seen my best yet” or “I hope America will let me come back and prove it to you.” Shouldn’t you have been singing at your highest level already? Why would you be putting off your best performance?

I missed it! Arghhh…did they say what next weeks theme would be?

Television Without Pity (the forums) tends to have the dope on upcoming shows… I keep asking how they know, but they just seem to * know * (even about shows weeks down the line).

Next week’s show is Motown. Yes, it IS different from Soul, but given the loose way people interpret the themes, there’ll be some overlap. I understand that the week after that is Big Band. John Stevens will have it made the next couple of weeks.

Okay, I’m surprised, but not shocked that Matt is gone. It really should have been Camille. My biggest problem with her is that she doesn’t enunciate properly. It’s a garbled mess. She’s clearly out of her league, which isn’t saying much.

Oh, yeah. I almost forgot…I hate John Penboy Lewis. Ick.

Anyone care to elaborate?

Motown is a subset of Soul. All Motown is Soul, but not all Soul is Motown.

Motown is a record label whose artists (Smokey Robinson, Four Tops, Temptations, Supremes, Stevie Wonder, among others) performed in the Soul genre.

And with Matt gone, and Ethan and Colby booted from Survivor, my wife has given up on Reality TV.

Thanks for the clarification, jsc1953.

In other words, we’re having another Soul night. Why? Couldn’t we have a Rap night, or a Folk Music night, or a freakin’ Opera night? I watch this show religiously but that doesn’t mean I don’t find it irritating.

Well, we’re having Soul Oldies night. Yeah, it is a bit redundant. They could at least have spaced them farther apart.

I think Folk or Opera would be a riot (Rap…not so much). But this being American Pop Idol, how far afield can they be expected to go? Country was whooo…way out there.

I have a love-hate relationship w/the show. And a hate/scorn relationship with Ryan Seacrest.

I put the Motown IS different from Soul as a joke. I supposed if they say “Classic Motown”, there will be more of that classic pop sound rather than the more soulful Motown 70s. My favorite early pop-soul performer is Sam Cooke. He was NOT Motown (that wasn’t his label), but I hope his songs are eligible.

My song choice for John Stevens this week is “Ben,” unless the whole MJ association is just too creepy. It is a great song, the only Jacko song I like.

Convict, do not use slurs or hate speech on the SDMB. Continuing to do so will result in banishment.

For the Straight Dope

Was just talking about this today with a friend who is from Idaho, and until she went to college, listened almost exclusively to C/W.

Quote: “So what’s the age range here? Sixteen to twenty-four? These kids don’t know from real country music! Not one song by Johnny Cash, or Patsy Cline or Hank Williams. Just the obvious standards like “You Were Always on My Mind” and “She Believes in Me”, which are like what you said about Whitney Houston—you shouldn’t even try to do them unless you are Willie or Kenny—and country lite, which they think is the real thing. Pfffffff.”
