American Idol 3/25, 26

I thought David kicked ass on that. And he’s annoyed me since the beginning.

Well. That was not a karaoke version, Mr. Cook.

I think I liked it. Took about 2/3s of the song not to hear the original, but by the end I think I liked it.

I guess I wait another weak for everyone else to be as bored by slow, shouty covers as I am. (Particularly when they’re covered note for note off of other covers.)

I think it was Chris Cornell.

That was great! The best of the night and my favorite of his performances so far. It’s no wonder they had him close the show.

I didn’t hear the original at ALL.

That was Billie Jean? No it wasn’t. What was that? Cannot stand Emo Boy.
I think Romulan will be gone.

Good- Captain Combover, Syesha

Points for effort- Michael Johns, Carly, Brooke, Chikezie

Probably alright but personally unimpressed- David A, Jason, Kristy

Needs to go home now- Ramiele

I kind of love Emo David. I haven’t had a favorite yet this season, but I think that’s changed. A Marvel supervillain. That’s awesome.

I thought Cook was pretty good. Miles better than the Greenwood song anyway.

What number was Brooke again? I can’t rewind.

Oh my God! Billie Jean gave me chills. I am so hoping that is his own arrangement.

So I am not his biggest fan, he can get too emo for me and has in the past struck me almost as a one trick pony who specialized in emo-izing songs of yesteryear, but I thought that was really good. It was really interesting, and definitely not grounded in the 80s.

Wow. I hope he at least gives credit where credit is due.

He hasn’t given credit so far, all his arrangements are rip-offs of stuff S, P and R wouldn’t know.

I would have liked it more if there was a shred of originality in that. It actually was note for note the original melody – changing the background made it sound completely different – but since we now know it wasn’t his (thanks, cricetus!), it just doesn’t seem all that amazing. Why am I always doomed to disappointment any time I think someone on this show might actually do something original?

Not giving credit for ripped-off arrangements on Idol didn’t hurt Chris Daughtry’s post-Idol career any.

Why is everyone calling David Cook “emo”? Isn’t he more of a Daughtry-lite, which is Nickelback-lite, which is Bon Jovi-lite?

I guess when I think of “emo”, I think of Dashboard Confessional*.

*Actually, at first it was Emo Phillips until about 2001 or so.

Actually, he did. After the fact, perhaps, but I distinctly remember him giving credit to “Live” for his take on “I Walk the Line.”

Only after he got a week of internet shit for trying to play it off like his own arrangement the week that he sang it.

Yes, that’s what I recall, too. I’d rather see someone on Idol admit to copying an arrangement while they’re up on stage.
