That’s IT! From now on I’m voting. I really want George to win but I’ll throw a few votes to LaToya too because I guess she doesn’t have a big enough fan base.
I agree that John was humble. He seems like a decent young man and I think he’ll do well with Big Bands, but he knows he’s no Idol.
I haven’t actually watched the results show, just rewound a tape of it to see who was dropped, and I was surprised as everyone at first. I think people don’t worry about LaToya, they spend their votes trying to “save” someone else. I agree LaToya is the best of the singers, the most mature, but I suspect that people rooting for her are older, less emotional and more objectively rating the singers, and less devoted. In other words, they aren’t manic 12-year-olds calling in 1000 votes for LaToya as they are for John Stevens
I never felt like Amy had a legitimate shot. She just doesn’t have that much charisma. And she looks like Jay Lenno.
They should have let the judges pick one other person to kick off the show, then said “April Fools!” and everyone laughs and then they tell the person, “no, really, you’re off the show.”
I’m with you, Caricci! I’ve got to start voting. I was appalled at the final three last night. I let out such a yell, I thought I’d wake hubby.
The problem with splitting your vote though, Caricci, is that you’ve got Penboy fanatics voting strictly for him and only him and people like us splitting our votes. At first, I thought I would vote for George and Latoya, but if I do that, then Diana is merely a Ralph Nader to Latoya’s John Kerry/Al Gore/(whoever runs next).
I’ve got to pick someone and stick with him/her. I’d love to see either George or Latoya win, so I’m really torn. Maybe I’ll decide next Tuesday.
And I really didn’t like the way she acted when she was declared safe. “Oh, yeah, I got it…” Yes, she is one of the more talented, but tone down the arrogance a little.
Camille, safe just like that? Not even in the bottom three? WTF??
I thought it should have been John Stevens, but I am relieved that I never have to see or hear Amy again. She was atrocious in every way. One by one, they all have to go.
Sheesh. What a travesty. There is no way LaToya belongs in the bottom three. Regardless of how you feel about whether or not she should win the whole competition (which I think she should), I don’t think there would be anyone here that truly believes John Penboy, John Redhead, or Camille is better than her.
Here is my theory as to what happened:
People watching the show believe (wrongly in this case) that LaToya is safe, so there is no need to vote for her. As a consequence they vote for someone else. I envision three flavors of these voters…
Fanatic Voters. These are the people voting for someone they like, regardless of talent. The example of Asian Americans voting in a bloc for Camille is an example of this.
Samaritan Voters. These are the people voting to “save” their second or third choice just so that they can advance further into the competition. I confess that I did this with Diana this week as a result of her being in the bottom three last week.
Manifesto Voters. These are the people voting to make a statement, knowing full well their candidate has zero chance of winning. This is akin to people who voted for Nader in the 2000 Presidential election. (People! – there are unintended consequences!) People who voted for John Redhead fall into this category. Voting for him just because he’s different.
I hope that this week’s voting results will be a wake-up call for Idol fans. Stop already with playing games with the votes (that includes me). Vote for who you think is the best, candidate to be the American Idol and let the chips fall where they may.
Holy Crap! What a joke.
I usually just lurk here with you all to see what you think, but damn it, this shit is out of control.
Latoya in the bottom three? Camille and JS completely safe??
[mini rant]I have been thinking of mentioning to you guys that you seem not to be getting the idea that you are suppose to vote for the person you think is “The Next American Idol” not who you think is cutest or who you think deserves another chance. I have consistently seen alot of you say you thought Latoya or George did the best but then say you voted for someone else…(I know this is not true of all of you, but you know who you are).[/mini rant]
Maybe this will serve as a wake up call.
I think Algernon hit it on the head.
After preview it appears I am being a bit confrontational to you all. My mini rant is really pointed at all of the people who do this, not just the people here.
Well, what makes a person an American Idol but a devoted fan base? If people won’t bother to pick up a phone and dial a number for LaToya, what makes you think they’ll drive to Target and buy her CD?
I only watched the last few minutes of the results show last night (and was glad Amy was booted - can’t stand her), so I’m surprised John Stevens wasn’t even in the bottom three. I think, though, that he’d really like to go home at this point. Every time he’s on camera he makes me uncomfortable, due to his complete lack of personality and the way he interacts with the other contestants (ie, not at all). I think he auditioned as a lark, got farther than he ever intended to, and is just sick of the whole deal by now.
I think Simon is getting more and more pissed off as the weeks go by: at Ryan, at getting cut off by music while trying to give some intelligent criticism, and so on. I wouldn’t be surprised if he steps down after this season.
[quibble] John’s shy and retiring personality is welcome amongst the “notice me! notice me!” types that plague the show (and show business in general). He never argues with the judges or acts entitled to anything and he doesn’t hold up his fingers to remind us what his number is. He’s got a better personality than a drama queen like Fantasia, that’s for sure. I think if I were judging on personality alone, though, I’d vote for George over John. [/quibble]
I completely agree about Simon. Simon should have a “don’t interrupt me” clause or he leaves the show. He doesn’t interrupt Randy and Paula, and they should show the same respect to him. And Ryan Seacrest is simply NOT FUNNY. It’s one thing to gently chide someone for wearing a loud jacket, it’s quite another to go on personal attack as Ryan does.
I believe that Simon is a co-creator of American Idol so I don’t think he’s going anywhere. I don’t think he’ll fire himself, especially since there is no one else that “tells it like it is” (even if I don’t always agree with him). I think he understands that there needs to be a judge that is critical. It’s part of why people tune in. They are interested in seeing what Simon is going to say this week.
If anything, I’m not going to expect to see Ryan around next year.
I’m with you guys on Simon getting cut off. They need to do something about the audience booing any slight criticism. Personally, I like hearing the criticism. Most of the time it’s a lot more accurate than the crap Paula says.
Amy should have never been voted off. I mean, only last week, she gave the BEST performance I’ve ever heard on American Idol. That includes Clay’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and Ruben’s “Flying Without Wings” last year.
You might enjoy this, if you haven’t come across it yet.Matt Feeney comments upon Simon’s putdown schtick gradually turning him into a Shatnerian self-parody. Feeney also skewers how Cowell still doesn’t get it that American pop fans know better than he does what they like. If that’s Ruben Studdard instead of the Spice Girl wannabes he prefers, it’s up to him to recalibrate himself, not object to the voting results.
And, after 3 rounds of Country Night so far, he ought to understand the genre a little, not complain that he doesn’t.
Now why Camile still dere? Dat lil wahine suck to da max, brudda (my daughter and I sang along to drown her out). Aloha mean goodbye too, okay mebbe?
I agree and when Simon does give a compliment it carries more weight. one of the guest judges on tuesday (Ashford or Simpson?) said that the contestants remember what Simon says while Paula’s blathering praise goes in one ear and out the other. Getting feedback from Paula is like getting it from your mom-- always positive and never informative. If Simon says you didn’t suck then you didn’t suck. He won’t shine anybody on. The show needs that. Without Simon this show would be Star Search. Nobody wants three Paulas at that table.
Cowell’s become a multimillionaire because he knows what will sell to pop fans. He knows there is a big difference between cheering to be nice in the studio and atually buying a CD.
Having heard so much about how successful Simon is, I’d be curious what acts he has signed… the Spice Girls, I think… but who else?
And whichever is the woman of the songwriting duo said that about remembering what Simon says, and it’s true. Don’t you think George values Simon saying, “I apologize, I was wrong,” regarding his ability to front a band than the usual praise from Paula? He was smiling so much I thought the top of his head would come off.
