Sam, just curious why you say Carly “nailed it” when she screwed the lyrics so badly. And I don’t mean just the small word substitutions throughout; I mean the really bad “Jesus Christ, Superstar, Who are you, what have you sacrificed?”. And while she sang “Superstar” the backups sang “Jesus Christ” correctly. It’s supposed to be like this:
Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ
Who are you? What have you sacrificed?
Jesus Christ, Superstar
Do you think you’re what they say you are?
I mean, I can see saying she did well despite the errors. But not that she “nailed it”.
I really really wanted to like the performances tonight, but I didn’t. Except for Syesha, who chose a perfect song for her and then did a damn fine job.
I’m fond of Jason but his performance was awful. As was Brooke’s.
I admired David A’s shook-up arrangement, but wish he had chosen a meatier song. While ALW emphasized the story of a song, his songs generally don’t have much story, and that song, by design, has less story than most. I love it when David believes what he’s singing; here, there was nothing to believe.
I didn’t really like David C’s song. He’s not the best singer to attempt the tune (although he was worlds, no galaxies better than Gerard Butler) but that could have been overlooked for a truly sexy performance. Which it really wasn’t. It was sincere, but that’s David A’s schtick.
I enjoyed Carly’s performance and thought it was a good choice for her. She didn’t change up anything. JCS is a rock opera and that arrangement was straight from the soundtrack. My only real complaint is that she didn’t understand the song. (That whole thing ALW was chastising Brooke about.) Based on Carly’s demeanor, one might think that Judas was a happy-go-lucky guy singing a rockin’ tribute to his BFF JC. Oooooo-kay.
Last week they got it wrong, predicting Syesha would leave.
I think there’s enough margin for error that the bottom 2 at least, and possibly the bottom 3, are all fair game. That said, I voted a lot for Carly and never got a busy signal. I’ll be bummed if she goes - it’s not her time yet.
Surprisingly, I thought the best part about last night’s show was Andrew Lloyd Webber. I love it when the mentors interact with them and don’t just say, “Oh, s/he was great!”
That said, the performances were a whole lot of “meh” and a little bit of “holy crap, that sucked.” This is hard for me because I like everyone who’s left. It’s a strong top six.
Syesha—Her best by far. Loved the personality; it’s what I’ve been looking for from her all season.
David C.—This definitely isn’t his gig but he sang it flawlessly.
David A.—Really good. Not his best, but really good.
Carly—Carly, I like you, and I think you can sing really well. I do not like, however, when you shout at me. If you hadn’t shouted, you’d be in the number two spot tonight.
Brooke—What is happening to her? I feel like we’re watching her totally lose it on national television and I don’t like it. She’s lost her sparkle and I want her to get it back.
Jason—Oh dear, poor Jason. You can’t warble show tunes, man. That’s really all I have to say about that.
I guess we heard it differently. Yes, she was singing a counter-melody – but to me it just clashed horribly both melodically and rhythmically, didn’t work as a counter at all. The whole time through each chorus I was convinced she was about one hair away from losing the rhythm altogether. And the lyrics were totally wrong; that grated on me as much as on Liberal. Damn you, Carly, for making me agree with Liberal about a reality show contestant!
Looking at the Dialidol results, it really looks to me as if the margin of error amongst the bottom four is close enough that really any of them could go. So I won’t be surprised by anything except a Shocking! Elimination! of either David.
I thought the do-over was better than just mangling an entire verse, like David A did on Beatles night. Yes, it’s unprofessional, but it’s live TV.
What show was Syesha’s song from?
David A’s voice just disappeared on the low end of the range. But I liked the arrangement he chose. I enjoyed David C’s performance, right up until the final note. What the hell was that?
If there’s any justice, Jason and Brooke should be packing.
Lots of gender bending tonight – David A and Jason singing songs intended for women, and Carly singing a man’s part.
Dialidol has Carly and Brooke as the bottom two. I think I’d rather see Carly go. As much as I initially hated Brooke, I’m starting to almost feel sorry for her now. Carly is more obnoxious and more self-satisfied. I would like to see her journey end tonight.
I liked David C. a lot. I liked Syesha and Carly OK. I didn’t like David A., Brooke, and Jason.
That said, I don’t like Brooke’s demeanor. She seems to be one of those types who constantly has to talk over people. I have a relative like that and hate it. I find myself yelling to get into a conversation.
Anyway, I really liked Paula’s critique of her. She was cold and honest. But then Brooke had to say something like, “First time I’ve ever forgotten a lyric on this show!” – Buh-fucking-bye.
I can’t get Drain Bead and Liberal’s spoiler boxes to open! That sounds slightly sexual, sorry. I need to see those predictions, damn it! I did the three clicks, but nothing happened. Don’t tell me this is a Vista thing…
Since they have no way to track text message votes, Dial Idol has a significant margin of error at times. I think it unlikely Carly will be out even tho she is in the bottom spot.
I’m expecting Brooke to get the boot. Jason probably should, based on how lame his performance was last night, but he has a fan base that is pretty motivated to vote for him no matter what.
I can’t imagine a scenario where either of the Davids or Syesha go at this point.
And Sampiro, as usual your analysis of the night was wickedly funny. I second your idea of Jason in the Speedo, BTW.
Dial Idol has Carly at the bottom, with Jason and Brooke just above her–no surprises there. I didn’t actually think Carly was so bad, but Jason and Brooke were awful, just embarrassing.
Syesha kicked butt. I’d never heard that song before, either.
David A. was pretty good, but not nearly as good as David C., though I could have done without that last twisted note.
My opinion as to why the lower ratings - 1) The audience. The new stage is probably supposed to get them closer by design. To me they overwhelm the singers and become too much of the act. And I HATE, HATE, HATE the fact they become such bellowing slobs when the judges talk.
2)Paula and Simon are phoning it in this year. When they spend more time poking each other and looking board, about to pass out, or whatever the show sufferers.
Live entertainment is all about energy, and Paula and Simon no longer have any.
Including during a terrible rendition of Memory last night. What the hell was that about? Candle in the Wind is an arms in the air slow song, but showtunes?
Also, A.I.'s new car smell is gone. It’s in its 7th season. They haven’t run the horse to death and then drug it behind a cart like they did with Survivor and other shows, but some aging is inevitable. (Maybe if they go over to Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp and get Bryan Dunkleman back it’ll fix it… especially if they bring over Erin Moran, Dustin Diamond and Sgt. Harvey “Kiss my fit yellow ass” Walden IV as guest judges to insure some drama.)
ETA: Unrelated to the above, Paula’s “NEVER. STOP. THE. SONG” comment last night was the first spine I’ve seen in her this season. That seemed to piss her off.
