I can’t tell if Paula is over-medicated tonight, or under-medicated.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot people???
This is the first guy kicked off, correct?
His farewell song sounded a bit flat, didn’t it?
Honestly, I’m not a Nikko fan and I’ve not kept that a secret. How is Scott surviving? He’s had the worst performance two weeks in a row. I find it hard to believe he has that many fans.
It was because everybody has caught on to his tricks!
Honestly, I think it is the sympathy vote that is keeping him alive.
I think Vonzell and Nadia are kind of splitting the “black diva” category. It happens when two contestants occupy the same box. People will pick one or the other. That’s why Constantine got himself out of the “rocker” box and is trying to redefine himself on the fly as a sort of pop/theater hybrid. All of the others that are left right now pretty much have their own niches so they don’t have to worry about splitting a fan base.
With Nadia and Vonzell, it’s Highlander time - there can be only one. But once one of them is gone, the survivor (and my money’s on Nadia) will consolidate the black diva vote and I predict she’ll have a strong finish after that. I still think it will be a Nadia-Bo final two, with Anwar and Carrie filling out the final four.
Maybe they’re afraid that he’ll smack 'em up if they don’t vote for him.
I agree with that. Nikko has been using some creative sleight of hand and diversionary tactics to cover up for his weaknesses as a pure vocalist. He was good at it, I’ll give him credit for that, he knew how to put on enough of a show, slide his missed notes and throw in some runs here and there that really weren’t as difficult as they seemed, but when it came right down to it, he was never really better than an ok singer.
I did like the guy and found him entertaining and creative in his own way. Finding ways to outperform one’s natural talent is a good trait in a person and that kind of overacheiving and work ethic (he obviously rehearsed himself silly) might be something he got from his father, an undersized ball player who compensated with wits, hustle and determination and became a Hall of Fame shortstop.
From what I’ve seen on other boards, Scott is perceived as the “Christian” contestant, and he has fans that are voting for him for that reason. There are more of them than you might think. His arrest record didn’t faze them a bit. It was kind of scary how quick they were to defend him.
Well, I didn’t get online last night so here’s my review even though we already know the results.
Scott - “Impossible Dream”. This is one of my favorite songs and I hated this arrangement. It is not a pop song, please don’t try to make it one. It’s a song that builds up to a big finish, that didn’t happen. I think Scott usually has a nice voice, but this sucked. The orchestra also drowned him out but you could still hear that it wasn’t good. They finally found a good look for him though. Bottom three for him.
Constantine - “My Funny Valentine”. He was also drowned out by the orchestra. What’s with that? I wasn’t crazy about the arrangement on this one either but I think it worked for him, he did okay. I want to hate him still but I agree he is very pretty and as long as he doesn’t eyefuck the camera and pretend to be a rocker he isn’t completely detestable.
Carrie - Some forgettable song from “The King and I”. Surely there was a better song somewhere. Yes, she’s a good singer but I agree with Simon it was “mind-numbingly boring”. I still don’t get the Carrie love, yes she’s technically a good singer but she even admitted that she’s out of her element when she can’t sing country and this isn’t Country Idol.
Vonzell - “People” I am so glad Mikhala was gone and could not sing this, I kept picturing her doing the cross eyes and waving her fingernails like the typical Barbra impersonator. Anyway, Vonzell at least was not drowned out by the orchestra, she was technically good but I don’t see the “wow factor” either.
Anthony - “Climb Every Mountain” I grew up listening to The Sound of Music soundtrack record (yes, I said “record” as in a vinyl LP. I am that old). I knew and sang every song by heart, even The Lonely Goatherd yodels and all. Climb Every Mountain is another one of those songs that builds. It is not a pop song. Don’t try to make it a pop song. I like Anthony. I think he has a nice voice. No, I don’t think he should win but I liked him. This song was the end of that for me. He was too quiet and at least half the song was out of tune, pitchy, flat, sharp or what have you. Also a bottom three performance.
NIkko - “One Hand, One Heart” The whole first part of the song was flat. Why couldn’t Randy tell that? He’s always on everyone with the pitchy business can he not hear flat? Dude, it was flat. Simon’s comments were right on. Another bottom three performance. Did I mention it was flat?
Anwar - “If Ever I would Leave You” Another fave of mine. I wasn’t crazy about the arrangement on this either but I think Anwar did much better than past weeks. And damn, he is pretty. His smile is so genuine. sigh even if he does bat for the other team what the hell difference does that make?
Bo - “?” Something from a musical I’m not familiar with. I think he probably lucked out with a lesser known song, less preconceived ideas about how it should be done. It wasn’t his best but it was one of the better of the night.
Nadia - “As Long As He Needs Me” My stupid boyfriend talked through some of her intro explaining why she picked that song but I gathered she’d never seen “Oliver” and did not know that it was song by a woman who was abused and subsequently killed by her man. Anyway, she did a good safe performance. It wasn’t quite “wow” for me but it was still one of the better of the night. Her flinging her head during the hard beats of the last line was a bit distracting and over the top.
Bottom three for me:
Scott
Nikko
Anthony
Who should go? Any of those three, they are all equally outclassed by the others at this point.
Okay, now we know who’s in and who’s out. The big surprise was that Vonzell was in the bottom three and not Anthony. I am not a Vonzell fan but I think she deserves to be around a bit longer so I hope her fans can step up and vote for her. I thought Scott might actually go (especially because of the domestic violence arrests) but I don’t have a problem with Nikko leaving since he was so flat.
In summary:
Nikko - flat
Anwar - pretty
Constantine - not sucking and also pretty … I feel so dirty. :o
Because we all know good Christians need to smack up they baby mama every now and then. She just a ho anyway, having babies without the blessing of The Lord.
You can get away with anything as long as you praise God while you do it.
I didn’t know there was a time limit on the musicals that were eligible. Was there?
In any case, Easy to be Hard from Hair would have been perfect for Bo.
All of Cleveland could be voting for him. Now that’s a scarey thought.
ok, so the theme was Really pre-1970s Musicals? Why didn’t they say that?
God, would it have killed them to choose something upbeat? The song choices were crap. So much so that in the recaps, the first 5 clips blurred dully together. Ok, so conclude that they could not select anything post 1975. Where was A Chorus Line? The Pyjama Game? Anything Goes, damnit, Anything Goes!? Godspell (Nadia could have rocked out Turn Back, O Man) , Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair, hell yes.
<wipes froth from chin>
In her intro, Nadia seemed hilariously unaware that “As Long As He Needs Me” is sung by a character who is domestically abused. In fact, a line was changed to obscure this:
As long as he needs me/I know where I must be/in spite of what you see I know that he needs me/
and another line that gives a clue was ommited:
who else would love him still when they’ve been used so ill? I think I always will/as long as he needs me/
Odd. Just odd.
I. Don’t. Believe this.
I never said Nikko was perfect. I never thought he would win. But WTF?
I was going to ask, “What kind of people are watching this show and voting?” but laina and gobear answered that for me. My mom says she must have jinxed him. She voted for him 100+ times last night: her first time voting for AI ever.
This. Sucks. No, I’m not going to stop watching, but…damn. Why Nikko? Why not Scott, or at least Anthony? I guess it’s the old story: not enough of a fanbase.
Why, oh why, is Scott STILL there???
I was a bit surprised that Vonzell was in the bottom three. Nikko isn’t my favorite but he sure as hell does better than Savol does.
Whoever this guy is, & he sure looks like Anwar, apparently he’s either weirdly narcissistic or didn’t quite understand the directions. He described himself as what he’s looking for.
No, there’s two tabs. Click on “I am looking for”.
