Well, the contender’s sex makes a big difference to perception. Also physical appearance, as viewers tend to use that to remember people whose voices aren’t that familiar yet, considering it’s on television.
Lindsay was stylistically very close to both Jessica & Bo, & not as good.
Jessica was stylistically similar to Bo, & physically similar to Carrie; she got voted out a week she sang Leann Rimes–not a rocking song, so she looked like Carrie with less of a big voice. It’s a shame, since devoid of visuals, I can imagine Jessica as having a great pop-radio voice. (Unlike, say, Scott or Anthony.)
But I agree that Nadia & Vonzell are unalike. There’s a demographic thing going on here that has little to do with singing style & more to do with fans’ self-identity & perception.
I couldn’t even watch her last season. I was floored when she won and hearing her this week reminded me of why I was completely unimpressed with her vocal style.
Polling my ready-made AI audience (my teenage daughters 13 and 14) I find that I am not alone. They didn’t like her either.
All this Fantasia hate should convince you all that I am the Ear Of America! I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: All my taste is in my mouth---- and it’s delicious!
I think Fantasia can sing okay. I just don’t like her attitude. She’s a bit of a crybaby, and takes all criticism personally. She seemed to be like “y’all owe this to me” the whole season last year. That smarminess comes across to me in her performances.
