I didn’t think the song was noticeably slower.
Siobahn chose a fairly mellow, dialed down selection. Not a bad idea for her since she needed to break away from the big scream gimmick. It’s also not a treacly song, which is good. This could be really good for her (ala Adam Lambert doing the Donnie Darko song) or really bad, depending on the execution. There’s a risk it could come off boring.
Agreed. There was nothing wrong with her performance, but I’m not running to iTunes to purchase it. If she puts out an album in the Tracy Chapman vein, I might be interested.
I guess it was maybe just expecting it to be faster since he said upbeat. Maybe I should take a page from Randy and just judge Tim on the Timscale.
Casey is really good, obviously the best of the night. The guitar is fantastic. I will download this from iTunes.
So that’s what happens when you ditch the band. Can we jump to a final two of Casey and Crystal, please?
This might be Casey’s best performance yet. His vocals and guitar are both perfect (nice to see someone on this show who can really play), and the interpretation was good. The ending could have been a little better. It just sort of tailed off there. Still, this is the kind of thing that I would actually want to listen to in the car.
One thing about Casey tonight that I rarely see on Idol is it really did feel like he knew what the lyrics were about and meant them… he interpreted it, like a mature performer does with a song, he didn’t just sing it or act it out with corny expressions. I suspect he went way outside the expected song list because he’s done this song a lot; it struck me as a very finished song for both the guitar and vocals.
Despite the inevitable comparisons to SRV, Casey’s voice reminded me of someone but I can’t quite think of who. Maybe Bob Seger, maybe Joe Cocker, something in his tone…it was good, whatever it was.
Yes, another reason I think he’s done this before is because of the awkward ending, he had to do the two minute edit.
I say Michael Hutchence, my wife thinks he had more of an Eddy Vedder vibe tonight.
Not sure about this. It’s coming off really high school theater. She’s singing it fine, but the hair, costume and set are a little cheesy. She kind of looks like the princess in a high school play sitting in front of a window, singing wistfully about her prince.
I dig the Shiv, although I do think she’s the Idol most likely to need Prozac, bless her heart.
Yeah, it looked pretty practiced. Those guitar parts were pretty tricky to play that smoothly while singing, and he was flawless. It didn’t look like it was something he’d just learned a few days ago. That had some polish to it.
I missed last week, what was disasterous about Siobhan’s performance?
I thought Shiv’s “interpretation” of the lyrics ventured into Ms. Teen South Carolina territory.
Isn’t that one of John’s acid songs?
I liked his performance tonight for these reasons; however, I didn’t like his voice today - some songs show his vibrato more, and I am no fan of vibrato (aka goat bleating).
“Lots of little Danny Gokey babies” had me laughing until I nearly wet myself.
For a guy who once got a band name from the lyrics, you ought to know what the song is about.
Not impressed with Lee tonight. Kinda shouty and obnoxious. And WTF is the guy with the bagpipe doing there?
