American Idol 4/6 to 4/7

OMeverlovinG, we got bagpipes and a digderidoo in the same week!

Forget the performances, that comment itself was worth quite a few votes.

Didgeridoo: Kinda cool, not at all distracting.

Full-regalia bagpiper descending a staircase, though…WTF? Seriously, WTF?

They have two hours and nine songs. They have nothing but time to fill. Why do they still insist on these chopped of versions of the songs. They’re already into the “na na na na’s” on "Hey Jude. They gave him to buil. What the hell? Could they have cut out the stupid, backslapping, backstage feeds or something.

Yeah, I know it’s supposed to be about meditation, but I thought he wrote it during his acid period.

Didn’t see the first couple of performances, so I can’t judge. I have a feeling hearing Aaron on “Long and Winding Road” wouldn’t have been a highlight for my evening. And I don’t like Katie much either, so probably not a loss.

Andrew - Continues to be intensely dull. I think it was a poor choice of song for him, and he didn’t change it up very much, plus he’s just such a dull performer.

Mike - Yeah, I liked this a lot. Enough so that I wanted to hear that final verse very much. It’s a gorgeous song (goes without saying) and he’s got a fabulous voice (ditto), and I actually liked the arrangement quite a lot. Thought it was hot. I’d buy it.

Crystal - I’m not comfortable with most of the finalists’ guitar playing this year. I keep expecting them to flub things, mainly because they all look down so often. Crystal didn’t look confident playing this at all. Anyway, aside from that, I thought Crystal sounded terrific with a soul/countrified version of one of the Beatles’ rockin’est songs. She and Mike are soooooo far ahead of the other contestants vocally it’s just not even fair.

Tim - oh God. I’m dreading this. “All My Lovin’” … one of the bubblegummiest of the Beatles catalogue. Paul sells it because he’s got some grit to his voice. Tim, OTOH, turns it into a Partridge Family song. Susan Dey should be playing the electric piano behind him with that redheaded chick banging the tamborine. Dull dull dull. Send this mediocrity home, America! Randy is hilarious. “It was a good Tim performance.” LOL. And newsflash to Ellen – it was George and John who had the moppiest tops, not Paul. As far as Simon goes… there’s no way he’s not grading on a curve! He is right about Tim accepting criticism well, I’ll give the kid that much.

(Man, I don’t get this Burger King commercial. “We blatantly stole the breakfast mcmuffin idea from McDonalds and we’re not saying our version’s any good, but hey at least it’s cheap.”)

Casey - Embarrassed to say I don’t know this song. A solid rendition that I think could easily work as a single today. He sold it 90% (agree with Randy about some of the pitch issues). Full of emotion wthout being melodramatic. Good for him! And he’s the only finalist whose guitar playing works for me – he has a confidence and ease that allows me to enjoy the performance. Totally agree with Simon: best of the night thus far. His voice isn’t the best but when you judge the whole package (performance, instrumentals, style and, yeah, looks), I think he gets the highest average score.

Siobhan - Let’s hope she doesn’t attempt a pimp note on this song! (Edited post-song: yep, she pulls out the HUGE OPEN MOUTH HIGH NOTE because the girl just can’t help herself.) So, she dirges it up. Yawn. The girl has a decent voice, I won’t say she doesn’t (you know who she reminds me of? Ellen Greene from Little Shop of Horrors.), but she just bores the heck out of me. I will say that it’s nice of Bjork to lend Siobhan her outfits.

Lee - This melody is very repetitive, but Paul was smart enough to start it off quiet and build to a crescendo both vocally and emotionally. Lee, on the other hand… dude, if you start off at 11, you have nowhere to go by the end of the song! (Also, what was with the key here? He doesn’t have a big range, so why start off in the stratosphere?) The bagpipes elude me, as did the digeridoo. They were both barely audible and added nothing to the performance. All in all, not a great outing for Lee, whom I normally like. Ellen and Randy are way off, IMHO. Though I do feel sorry for the bagpiper. Who was awfully cute, btw.

All in all, it wasn’t a trainwreck, but only three performances were really anything to write home about. Unless Katie and Aaron knocked it out of the ballpark, of course.

Crap, I missed it, who said that?

Although “Why NOT, man!” also gave me the giggles, so the utter bewilderment (and fear of the camera showing me a bit of the wee Scotsman, if you know what I mean) was worth it in the end.

You mean that it was written between 1968 and 1980?

Dio I am with you 100% on the craptastic truncations. It’s one of those things that’s bothered most everyone since the first season, and it gets really annoying when they’re up to the top ten. Grrr.

Siobhan - Karen Carpenter sings The Beatles.

It was actually quite lovely - the high power note was unnecessary, though.

ETA: She’s very Molly Ringwald from “Pretty In Pink.”

I think the talent for this season is lacking in compared to other seasons. Non-music related i think these contestants have some great marketing names. If I was a music producer, I would give my clients memorable and recognizable names like
Didi Benami - Sounds rhythmical
Aaron Kelly, - Country/Western sounding name.
Casey James - sounds like it is already a stage name
Siobhan Magnus - Magnus sounds magnificent
Lee Dewyze - another great name

Crystal said in the Lee Dewyze’s intro. Apparently Andrew and Lee are “Bro”-dating.

And the “bromance” is going to make a lot of little Danny Gokey babies. Gotcha.

That’s pretty funny. I’ve been calling Lee “Danny Gokey lite” already. I’m probably not the only one.

Thanks.

Aaron - boorrring

Andrew - okay, not great

Mike - loved it. He has a spectacular voice

Casey - So glad he quit grinning and sank his teeth into a song. The boy’s got talent.

Crystal - What’s not to love about it?

Katie - boring

Lee - I actually hated this number. First of all, he’s not established enough to ask the audience to sing along with him. Second, the whole thing was forced. Bummer.

Siobhan - pretty but not memorable. Glad she didn’t scream, though.

Tim - High school talent show type song. I’m thinking that the judges laid in on thick to discourage those who vote because the judges were mean to him.

Once again, Andrew, Katie, Aaron and Tim are in a totally different league than Mike, Crystal, and Casey. Siobhan and Lee are on the fence for me.

For the first week in many, I wasn’t shaking my head sadly through the episode. That’s not much of a ringing endorsement, but it’s something, right?

Fearless prediction: the Judges’ Save gets used tomorrow night on either Lee or Siobahn.

Casey is by far my favorite which surprises me because he wasn’t my favorite going into this. Mike is a close second and Bowersox third.

Every time I hear Casey sing though, he reminds me SO much of Eddie Vedder. I want him to rock out a Pearl Jam song!

I knew Lennon/McCartney night was going to be disappointing. For me, the only two performances were watching were Casey’s and Crystal’s.

I just cannot stand Big Mike as a performer. He performs every song the same way - big power ballad with lots of heavy emotion and crying and begging and pleading. And while he’s a technically good singer, his voice just doesn’t have a great tone. He’s not exactly Barry White or Luther Vandross. The result leaves me pretty cold.

The didgeridoo annoyed me, because it wasn’t in tune with the rest of the instruments. Had they nailed that bottom note, it would have added a pretty cool vibe to the song. So I think it was theoretically a good idea. It just missed in execution.

Siobhan bored me. I’m starting to really lose the plot with her. I hope she does something amazing soon, because she’s starting to look like the 5th runner up behind Casey, Crystal, Lee, Mike, and maybe Katie. Her personality may carry her further, though.

Want to play a Beatles Song and rock the bagpipes at the same time? Play “Mull of Kyntire.”

All the other performances were completely unmemorable.

The line Danny Gokey babies was funny, and unexpected, but the thought of it is very scary.

Aaron-good voice, but utterly boring song.
Tim-yes, Tim did Tim.
Enjoyed Crystals performance and song.
Absolutely hate the song Eleanor Rigby so no one can do it and have me enjoy it.
Katie-okay, I guess, but she doesn’t have the It factor Simon speaks of.
Casey was excellent, the band is really not an asset.
I love hey Jude so would’ve enjoyed it done by anyone.
Andrew-boring.
Sioban-very good voice but poor song choice.
Who will be leaving? I have absolutely no clue. Sometimes its quite obvious, not this week.

At last the show wasn’t boring this week thanks to the extras.
Yes, loved the Kiltman.
