Hey, I like that song! And AI is at its best when it takes familiar songs and puts a fresh spin on them.
So this week the contestants went home, and video of the affairs are on youtube.
Lee was boring. I didn’t see much from Crystal. But Casey’s trip was interesting. Rather than going to high schools and the typical AI stuff, he put his old band together and played a set at an old blues bar he used to play in.
Man, this guy can play the blues. Here he is doing Tom Petty’s King’s Highway. This totally rocks. Great guitar work.
In another video you can hear him just ending a Dick Dale’s “Pipeline”. And here’s another video of him playing John Mayer’s Gravity. Listen to the extended solo he plays in that song. Great taste, very intricate.
I like him more and more. I like that he took his homecoming act to a little blues club. I like his guitar playing. But still, I’d pick Crystal over him. She’s got something special, whereas Casey is just really good.
I honestly don’t think Lee belongs on the same stage as those two. Not that he’s bad, but now that I’ve heard some non-AI stuff from Casey and Crystal, I’m starting to think they’re two of the best contestants this show has ever had. But maybe Lee will surprise yet.
Btw, Maybe I’m Amazed is a good song. One of McCartney’s better solo songs.
I’m much happier with Maybe I’m Amazed than Hallelujah.
I am so sick of that song - it’s a downer, and the seriousness of it just seems forced and oh-so important…
Yea for Paul McCartney!
According to MJ’s Big Blog, Simon now owns the rights to “Hallelujah”. So that makes sense. As I recall, it was one of the few Tim performances he liked–he probably wanted people to download it from iTunes. I guarantee you that no matter how badly Lee butchers it, Simon will say it was wonderful.
Anyone care to speculate on how Crystal is going to handle the “Baby, I’m a man” portions of the song? Idol often makes people gender-bend the lyrics–I doubt Crystal will want to…
10 SD$ on “I don’t think she’ll change the lyrics at all.”
