So here we are, the end of quite possibly the worst season Idol has ever seen.
And I have song spoilers.
Each contestant will do three songs. One they did earlier in the season, one picked by the producers, and the coronation song, which is different for both of them.
Crystal:
Me and Bobby McGee
Black Velvet
Coronation song is called “Up to the Mountain”
Lee:
The Boxer
Everybody Hurts
Coronation song is called “Beautiful Day”
Maybe this is a bit too conspiracy-theorist, but I think he used his clout to pick mostly awful talent this year so people would stop watching…and maybe tune into his new X-Factor when it comes on instead.
I have not been here at all since very early in the voting stage. Even though I watched on and off, the show just did not have the drama that I so love. In fact, the only drama I saw was in the Dope Idol threads-- and even that was pale and lackluster.
I’m old. I like old songs and enjoy when Idolists sing them. But that isn’t right. These guys should be blazing a new trail. . . or something cliche like that. I therefore conceded the ground to the youngsters.
Still, I’m glad to see one of my top 2 absolute favorites from the beginning waaaaaay during auditions (Big Mike being my local hero) with a chance to win and all of those bad haircut “cutting edge” hipsters gone.
Does anyone know what and who is lined up for tomorrow? Besides a teary yet mean-spirited goodbye to Simon, that is. At least I hope it’ll be a little mean-spirited cuz it’s Simon.
I miss Big Mike and wish he (or Casey, even) were there instead of Lee, who doesn’t do it for me at all and is inexplicably being pimped.
I say inexplicably, but I’m sure he’s being pimped because he’s dumber, more malleable, and less of a liability health-wise than Crystal is. Not because he’s more talented or better or has any sort of It Factor, or even any sort of personality whatsoever.
So Lee’s “The Boxer” was nowhere near as good as the first time around. Some off-key issues, warbly and weak sounding vocals, and the band was Muzak-y, not that this was his fault.
Not to make believe that Kara is a good judge, but something rang true about her comment re: Lee’s emotional availability. Sure, Crystal’s a more competent and talented singer, but Lee does have his heart right out there every time he opens his mouth. People prefer different things in their Idol winners, but at least it makes sense to me now why Lee fans might like him.
So far I’ve liked all the song choices, but now we hit the coronation crap.
I think it’s the first time with an R.E.M. song. I’m a pretty big fan so I think I’d remember if someone had… I did figure if anyone ever did one of their tunes, it would be that one.
Now that that’s taken care of, and Leonard Cohen’s been done, I’ll wonder for a decade if anyone will ever do a song by Weezer or Wilco. Or better yet, The National.
Oh, there aren’t crappy songs about the Idol experience this time! Wow. I’m profoundly happy about that. Love the U2 song, and Crystal must be doing the Patty Griffin song. They ran the table! All good songs! Unbelievable!
Maybe this is the worst season evar, but this is a great finale. I like the fact that neither of them does much show-offy stuff with their vocals. I’ll always take a natural performance of a well-written song.
