There is still hope… Hell, I’d vote for Diana over LaToya… and I’m the farthest thing from a teenybopper :p.
LaToya will have a record deal, so you can buy her music if you like her.
Frankly, I thought she was boring and felt the judges were trying to shame us into voting for her. She’s skillfull, but very predictable and bland.
That may have been true, but there’s no way that Jasmine shouldn’t have gone home tonight. She had to know she sucked ass last night.
Right. Whether or not people found her boring, at least La Toya had consistent singing skills. So if this truly was a singing contest and not a popularity/sympathy contest, then Jasmine should have left (a few weeks ago). But it’s not even close to a singing contest and this season has been the worst in that respect. Season 2 was the only time it was close to being right and even then not until the Top 3.
I actually had a bad feeling about LaToya before the show even aired Tuesday night because I had seen an ET or Extra blurb where all 3 judges said they felt LaToya would win. Not LaToya OR Fantasia, just LaToya, I knew that would jinx her.
It is a popularity contest. It’s not even SUPPOSED to be a singing contest, which is why good singers are routinely dismissed for not having “it,” whatever it’s supposed to be… Scooter Girl comes to mind.
To be honest, I lost interest weeks ago. I didn’t even watch tonight; I knew either LaToya or Fantasia would be voted off and I didn’t want to see it. Last season had me from start to finish; this season has been more like the first Canadian Idol, where talent seemed to have no bearing on how people vote. How poor little Jasmine from “Hawah… EE!” stays around I cannot imagine.
There will probably be an AI4, but not an AI5.
Simon made her cry last night. You gotta vote for the crying girl, right?
I wouldn’t. No way.
It just stinks that both Latoya and Fantasia were in the bottom two. It stinks that Latoya went instead of JASMINE, but better Latoya than Fantasia, imo.
This is just what I’ve heard, so take it with a grain of salt.
Scooter Girl was considered by the judges to have “it”, but not to have the vocal prowess to get into the final 12, or to last long if she got in by the skin of her teeth or as a judge’s wild card. Because contestants who’ve made it to the final 32 can’t audition again, they left her out, on the expectation that she could spend a year taking voice lessons and so forth, and come back and really kick @ss.
Gosh, I hope that’s not true because I absolutely hated sCooter Girl.
Two people have to be in the bottom two. That much seems obvious. Simon isn’t surprised to see Diana safe, yet he is surprised at both Latoya and Fantasia being in the bottom two. Uh, Simon, that adds up to three contestants you apparently expected to be safe.
I’m actually happy with tonight’s results. Diana is my favorite of those left, and it seems that she had the highest vote total, which bodes well for her in the final two shows.
I don’t think it’s a matter of America being idiots. We’re far enough into the competition that most people have already chosen their favorite and are going to vote based on that regardless of the latest performance. Jasmine has her fans, and she has given good performances in the past. I admittedly know little about music, but I enjoyed Jasmine’s performance last night.
People vote for their favorites, which are often different from what the experts think are the best quality. The most popular movies are seldom the ones the critics and most knowledgeable filmgoers like the best. Fantasia and Latoya split the diva vote, while Diana and Jasmine each had their own unique audience with less crossover. Things are looking good for Fantasia right now; she’lll likely get a lot more of Latoya’s fans than either of the other two.
Well, all I know is, tonight’s audience booed her. Even Johnny-Boy didn’t get booed, not during the show, anyway! It’s been predicted that if LaToya or Fantasia were voted out tonight, the backlash against Jasmine would make what happened to JS look like a cakewalk. We shall see.
Not to say that I blame Jasmine for this, but by default, she should have been the one to go tonight. What did happen is a crying shame. Yes, I know LaToya will have a career without this (although what kind of ties bind her to 19E will determine her trajectory for a while), but I honestly thought she belonged in the top spot. She’s a lady, and would carry the title with grace and class.
Hear, hear to your last, Rilch.
It appears confirmed that the predominant demographic voting on American Idol contestants is now the viewers who routinely watch Jerry Springer, Maury Povich, Geraldo Rivera, and Barbara Walters.
I would so love to see a statistical breakdown of the votes; how many voted for each contestant, how those votes broke down between telephone and text-messaging, and, among telephone votes at least, what regions voted for which singers.
Strike that; I would have loved to see it. As with so many other Dopers, I’ve lost interest. Tiramisu good luck finding IDOL threads here in the future. I can’t see the next few week’s shows generating enough activity to keep one on the front page for long. Just be glad Cafe Society isn’t MPSIMS.
I don’t think they booed Jasmine per se, so much as they booed La Toya leaving. It’s possible to be sad for La Toya but not blame Jasmine. Frankly, I blame Simon. I think his comments constituted a sort of call to arms. He said that every house in Hawaii would need 5 phones. Jasmine’s fans understood what that meant, and they poured it on.
Do any of you think this contest is rigged? No, seriously. I suspected it last season, and this season seems even worse. On the other hand, if Fox is doing something like this just to keep us interested, it’s going to backfire. I’m not sure I’m watching anymore either. When Diana winning is the best case scenario, well…
I should really get more sleep.
I think American Idol is being Punk’d. Somewhere, there is a messageboard with a large enough audience that is dedicated enough to flood the AI polls with millions of votes for the cheesiest contestant. They tried it with John Stevens, and now they are trying to skew the outcome so that Jasmine survives as long as possible. It is all a joke to make AI look stupid.
I think that people need to take a deep breath and remind themselves that this is a game show. The inflated feelings of outrage, injustice; the suspicions of tampering and cheating; the anxiety over things being decided by muddled and idiotic masses – these are best reserved for the upcoming presidentential election.
You are obviously correct, but I want it to be a singing contest.
I didn’t see any of season 1. Caught only the last few episodes of season 2. I watched every episode this season and kept with it as long as I felt the best two or three singers remained, believing that talent would win the day.
I almost gave it up when John Stevens kept surviving, but stuck with it. With LaToya gone there is no reason for me to watch anymore. I’m not quitting due to outrage or disgust as much as for the realization that this isn’t about being the best singer. Therefore, I won’t be watching the rest of this season, nor the next season.
Based on the huge ratings, I don’t think they’re going to miss me.
(By the way, someone suggested in one of these threads weeks ago that perhaps the voting should be to vote for the person you think should be gone. I’d love to see this tried. I think it’d be better.)
I’d also suggest that they allow only one vote per phone line.
Wonder what would happen if they let us have William Hung back now?
So who do you think George’s people voted for? Not Latoya, it’s clear.
