I thought Tamyra’s song would never end! She made any reference to the melody of OVER THE RAINBOW disappear. It sounded like the guitar player literally banged on some chords just to try to get her back in tune. And it really didn’t work. She looked great, but Kimberley Locke sang that song a lot better at the beginning of the competition.
As for Justin. . . well, let’s just say I really liked Justin during AMERICAN IDOL #1. I thought his exotic looks and over-the-top personality made him stand out from the crowd and I always enjoyed his resemblance to Sideshow Bob. That being said, his singing of UNCHAINED MELODY only 24 hours after Clay had raised the roof with his version of the same song left much to be desired.
I think these two guest performances really show what Simon has been saying all along: the singers from AMERICAN IDOL #2 are so far superior to the first bunch! I hope there’s as much fame and money in store for the new group as there seems to have been for Tamyra, Justin and Kelly. The new kids deserve it more.
Now that I’ve seen peoples comments about Justin and Tamyra’s performances, I don’t feel too bad about fast forwarding through them (my wife and I were busy getting the kids to bed when the show was on, so we taped it and watched it at 9:30).
I’m happy with the results of last night’s show. I wouldn’t have minded Ruben going last night either, but I think Clay definately belongs in the final 2. I don’t think Kim will have to worry about her future though; I’m sure she’ll get picked up pretty quick by some label, as will whoever comes in second next week.
All I can say about Justin and Tamyra’s performances is: thank god for Ultimate TV. Soon as I heard the opening strains, I just flipped right on past all that crap.
I didn’t watch last season, but after watching Justin, Tamyra and Kelly’s performances on this seasons AI, I honestly don’t believe I missed much. shudder
I was sad to see Kim go last night, but really… I would’ve been just as sad to see Ruben or Clay go. I have a new spin on Simons idea, lets oust Paula instead and give each of the finalists their own record deal.
I really would’ve been okay with it ending Tuesday night. I know someone has to win, but I honestly don’t believe that any of those three deserved to lose.
That being said… WOW on Clay’s performance of Unchained Melody. Wow. Wow. Wow.
Justin is a poor, poor fool for trying to follow him.
Actually, Morgainelf, it’s been confirmed by people associated with the show that, because they were short on content (remember when Ryan said the producer was asking him to stretch things out when he was sitting and yacking with Ruben at one point in the show?), they did, in fact ask Clay to sing an additional verse (to a song he didn’t know!) about an hour before showtime.
And if you look on page 1, you’ll see I put exactly which lyrics he missed.
I think it was extremely disingenuous for one judge to criticize the “song choice” when he didn’t choose it! and another one, who knew they’d given him additional lyrics to learn an hour before the show, to publicly criticize him without acknowledging that fact.
But I give my props to Clay, though, for handling it with grace and professionalism. He took the criticism with a smile and a thank you and said the next one he’d just have to bring it on – which he did. He’s a class act, that kid.
Shayna, I gotta agree with you on the last point. If, in fact, they gave him another verse to learn just before showtime I say he handled unfair criticism with uncommon class. Didn’t get all defensive and try to explain it away.
