American Idol 5/15

Melinda is probably (surely?) a bit better than the other two, but really it’s getting to this stage that is what it’s all about. She’s not leaps and bounds above Jordin, if at all.

Idol isn’t the Superbowl. It’s about getting tons of exposure, and getting famous. Including the vote-off song, Melinda has sang 6 songs on live TV, in front of 40 million people over the past 8 days. Not too many people out there you can say that about.

There was probably some vote-splitting going on that got Blake through. He won’t win, but he’s at least a guy who has made me say, “I wonder what he’ll do next week” which is more than I can say about a lot of Idol contestants over the years.

The right 3 made it through this year. Some good personalities. Pretty good season of Idol.

Okay, Mark and Brian? Ryan did not just offhandedly say “Melinda goes home!” He SHOUTED it. People are not making a huge deal out of something they had to reach for. They’re making a moderate deal out of something highly attention-getting.

To tell you the truth, I was too squicked out by Elliott (WTF’s with the hair and those teeth?!?) to commiserate with Melinda’s fate.

As somebody said previously, Melinda may be the better singer technically, but she’s not a performer like Blake. Blake’s voice isn’t the greatest, but I enjoy every single minute I see him onstage. And he LOVES to perform – you can tell.

Jordin? Marketability-wise, she’s got the looks, the personality, and the pipes. Plus there’s her age. All three makes her amazingly relate-able to that particular demographic.

I refuse to even think about next week. I don’t want to go there.

BTW, I’m not worried about Melinda in the least. I can see her doing something similar like Jennifer Hudson, or perhaps on Broadway.

Yeah, that’s where I see Melinda going, and where I’d really like to see her. I think I would enjoy her MUCH more on Broadway as opposed to just performing pop music.

She IS the best singer, but honestly - I don’t see her selling albums like Jordin or Blake (although I think Jordin’s got more potential than Blake). She just doesn’t appeal to as wide of a range as those two. And give Jordin a couple more years to catch up, and there’ll be no discrepancy in ability.

Not the slightest bit surprised… Blake and Jordin are younger and more marketable…

Now, were this “Neckless Idol”, Doolittle fans would have a legitimate gripe…

She’ll play the title role when they do a musical version of Shrek.

By the way, how did we get to page three with no mention of the intro?

“Simon was scary, Paula was nice, and Randy forgot to button his shirt.”

Can we get Homer to replace Ryan full-time next season?

I hate to side with your husband, but I think last night’s results can be entirely explained by demographics. If you assume that the voting audience largely skews to teenage girls – they want to be Jordin; they want to date ]Blake. Melinda: no connection. And Blake picked up all of Chris R’s and Phil’s votes when they left.

I don’t usually do this, but I must comment on the ad for page three of this thread: “Undo Circumcision Damage - The Your-Skin Cone will make you supple and sensitive like uncut men”. The hell?!?

[On topic] Once it was Melinda, Jordin, and Blake as the final three I relaxed completely about who was going home. All three of them are sure things for a record contract.[/On topic]

Is it just me or does Blake’s dad remind you of this guy?

Precisely…but my husband’s contention is that the producers of AI are selecting these contestants without even bothering to count any of our silly little votes.

Sort of - but I think he reminds of someone else. One of these days I’ll see the look-alike, and think of Blake’s dad…

If you had to suffer through the disgustingly smarmy Ben Mulroney on Canadian Idol, you’d want to kiss Ryan’s feet. Seems being the boy child of a former PM is all the cred you need to have your puss spread all over one of the national networks.

I have it, and I love it.

For everyone who thinks Jordin’s a shoe-in to win this thing, don’t discount the vitriolic hatred of Jordin by a seemingly large contingent of Melinda fans who are now committed to voting their fingers raw for Blake. I predict an upset victory. Absolutely nothing about this show surprises me anymore.

One thing I’ll say about Blake - after seeing his homecoming video, I’ve decided that I truly like the guy. He didn’t seem overly ego-centric or overly humble or at all fake - just a nice guy who hit the big time and is having a gas. And the love he showed for his dad, and his willingness to hug him and give him a peck on the cheek in public just says something very good about his character. And notice that when he and Melinda were standing there, Blake called her a ‘machine’, and fully expected to go home. And to his credit, he actually looked a bit angry when Melinda got the book, as in, “Are you people deaf? She’s way better than I am!” He seemed truly upset that she was voted off. So… I like Blake.

Melinda should have won this thing. She’s maybe the best singer the show’s ever had (from what I’ve watched of it), and I disagree with those who say she has no emotion - she knows exactly how to sell a song. I’ll buy her CD, for sure. If there’s still room in the music business for a new Tina Turner, Melinda will do well. If not, well… She’s from Nashville, and there’s a big, big musical scene there. She’ll find a niche somewhere, now that people know who she is and what she can do. She won’t be flipping burgers in five years, that’s for sure.

But given that she didn’t win, I’m at least happy that the final two appear to be decent people. No head-cases or ego trips. Just a couple of young people having the time of their lives. So that’s cool.

It remains to be seen if Blake can put together a career with his talent. I agree that he’s not quite the singer the other two were, but I think he could easily put on the best stage show of the final three. And they can do magic in the studio to remove whatever imperfections he’s got. His voice is somewhat thin, so they’ll double-track it and put some backing vocals behind it. If he goes a little out of tune here and there, they’ll auto-tune it out of existence. So he can make a good sounding record, and put on a great show on tour. That could be big. So what remains is whether he can come up with an album of compelling songs that are both radio-friendly but don’t make him come off as a musical lightweight. He’s got to find a little more edge than he’s shown so far.

I don’t know about Jordin. Great singer, but aren’t there a million just like her? And her taste seems to be more towards older torch songs and power ballads. That puts her in some seriously tough company. I hate Celine Dion with a passion, but she can sing amazingly well. Put Jordin in the record bin with Celine, Mariah Carey, Beyonce’, Whitney, and the other pop divas, and does she really stand out? I don’t know. Unless she puts out a CD of stellar songs, I probably won’t listen to it.

That could be a violation of federal law

Snap!

I fast forward through Randy and Paula.

I think Blakes Dad looks exactly like Blake Clark from Waterboy and other Adam Sandler movies.

Speaking of Blake’s dad, that was awkward when Seacrest had to tell him several times to sit down…was he supposed to be onstage with Blake or did he just come up of his own accord?
