American Idol 5/4 to 5/5

I’m all for giving Randy the boot. I don’t think he adds one single thing to the show and mostly just annoys me (and for that reason alone, he must go! heh)

I had somewhat high-ish hopes for Ellen that she would give some feedback on the performance part of things but she’s a lame duck and, like Randy, adds nothing and you know no one takes her ideas or feedback seriously.

Kara - really dislike this woman on a thousand million levels. She can be shown the door and the Idol nation would cheer so loud you could hear it in the streets.

I love the idea of HCJ as judge, along with NPH (good choice), Quincy Jones (fine with me) and surely there’s another woman who could complement that team.

(I know. Nunya asked me my opinion but there you go.)

Bring Paula back. We need a little bit of the crazy!

Here’s the full list they have to choose from for Movie Soundtrack Night:

Why do they always include all those duets?

(list of mostly slow, old songs removed)

They are following up Sinatra Week with this? Have they totally written off the under-50 audience?

Also, I’d bet on Casey doing “Eye Of The Tiger”.

I’ll give Lee 50 bucks the next time I run into him if he plays Danger Zone – but I have a feeling it’ll be Iris. And is there any chance Michael is going to do anything other than Kiss From A Rose? While we’re picking, I’ll say Crystal does Take My Breath Away.

ETA: Just remembered – top four week is when they start singing two songs each…

Re-ETA: No, wait, scratch that last one – top four week is when they used to start singing two songs each. But remember, last year at this time they had them each sing on their own, and then there were two duets (which answers your question, Drain Bead).

I recall Katie Perry doing a good job as a guest judge (as in, she wasn’t kissing anyone’s ass and was actually giving realistic feedback). My line-up - Harry Connick Jr., Neil Patrick Harris, and Katie Perry. I also think Katie might bring a little of the crazy, too. Randy can stay or go - I don’t mind him.

I’d give Casey 50 bucks if he’d do “Mrs. Robinson” and stare right at Kara while singing it. (He’ll probably do “Eye of The Tiger,” though. He hasn’t been very good at picking songs this year, probably because he thinks he’s something other than what he actually is.)

I think Crystal will do “Summertime.” I also think she would kick ass at “Take My Breath Away,” but she wouldn’t stoop to such a commercial song.

I think Crystal and Big Mike will attempt “Endless Love” as a duet, and it will be like Chandler and Phoebe trying to sing it on “Friends.”

I have to agree on Lee and Big Mike doing “Iris” and “Kiss From A Rose.”

The boys who don’t get to sing with Crystal will have to make an interesting choice - “Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In” would be the least romantic choice, I think.

I could see Crystal getting into full-on hippie chick mode and singing Janis’s version of “Summertime”, or “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine in”.

I’ll bet that Casey does “Everything I do (I do it for you)” by Bryan Adams. Unfortunately.

An interesting choice for Lee would be “Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds.

By and large, this list is the suckiest collection of MOR crap you could imagine. The American Idol song pickers have no taste. You’d think they could have at least included a track from the Blues Brothers or something. “She Caught the Katie” would be awesome. Or “Gimme Some Lovin’”, or “Sweet Home Chicago”.

Or, they could have picked something from “The Commitments”, which is one of the great sountracks of all time.

If I were an American Idol song picker, this’d be my list for movie sountrack songs:

“Stuck in the Middle With You” - Stealer’s Wheel, from Reservoir Dogs

“Just Dropped in To See What Condition My Condition was In” - The First Edition, from The Big Lebowski

“Twist and Shout” - The Beatles, from Ferris Beuhler’s Day Off

“Mustang Sally” - The Commitments, from The Commitments

“Where is My Mind” - The Pixies, from Fight Club

“I am a Man of Constant Sorrow” - The Soggy Bottom Boys, from O’ Brother, Where Art Thou?

“Sweet Jane” - Cowboy Junkies, from Prelude to a Kiss

“I Can’t Tell You Why” - Eagles, from Winter Passing

“The Pusher” - Steppenwolf, from Easy Rider

“Sweet Emotion” - Aerosmith, from Dazed and Confused

“You Never Can Tell” - Chuck Berry, from Pulp Fiction

“Lose Yourself” - Eminem, from 8 Mile

“Gangsta’s Paradise” - Coolio, from Dangerous Minds

“Bohemian Rhapsody” - Queen, from Wayne’s World

“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” - Rolling Stones, from The Big Chill

“Son of a Preacher Man” - Dusty Springfield, from Pulp Fuction

“The Weight” - The Band, from Easy Rider

“Gimme Shelter” - The Rolling Stones, from GoodFellas

“Shout” - Otis Day and the Nights from Animal House

“John the Revelator” - Son House, from Blues Brothers 2000

And for duets, “Hard Sun” as done by Eddie Vedder and Corin Tucker for the Into the Wild soundtrack.

I do like the way you think, Sam.

It’s such an ensemble show tune, I don’t know how a single voice could sing it right, but I did want to point out that the original song is so much better than the 5th Dimension mash-up.

Given the crap songs they have to choose from and the crap band they have to use on said crap songs, I just don’t see the next show ending well.

I could actually see “I’m Alright” being done with a decent modern arrangement.

Exactly what I thought after reading that list.

Terrible list, but there are a few good songs on there… “Over the Rainbow” would be a good one for Crystal, she could Bruddah Iz it with the acoustic guitar.

I also happen to like “Moon River,” and it would be nice if someone ever did it simple and acoustic the way it was in the movie.

I just don’t need to hear any Bryan Adams song ever again.
