American Idol – 5/6/03

Whether she should have won or not isn’t really the point. She should have been top two at least, and definitely shouldn’t have been voted off before the talentless Nikki. But when it comes own to it, where are they now? Tamyra is on a popular TV show and Nikki is managing a karaoke center. 'Nuff said.

After watching this particular ep., I can conclude one thing.

While Josh is more talented than the average individual in America, he simply does not compare to the other three.

Please, please, let him be voted off.

Rickjay:

“I’ll assume Jurhael is either joking or is hearing impaired.”

I’m neither as I was TRYING to vote for Ruben the most. I’m also not very patriotic AT ALL. I simply happened to like Josh’s second performance and decided that it was worth a few of my votes. He’s not going to be safe. He’ll be in the bottom two and it wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up eliminated anyway.

Grace, I’m not surprised at the comment given that A LOT of people dislike Josh. Besides, with Trenyce gone, I no longer care who is in the top three now. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have given Josh a single vote.

Clay is raising his game.

Ruben sings well, but when interviewed, he comes off as well, a rube.

Kimberly is the reason Trenyce got bounced since they share a fan base. She hit a sour note tonight and it was painful.

Someone else summed up Josh best: He looks like he’s taking a dump whenever he sings.

I was trying to watch the show and study for one of my nursing finals at the same time, so I kept hearing Robin Gibb’s British accent and thinking it was Simon. I remember thinking, “Simon’s actually saying something nice for once!”

Then I looked up from my book and saw that it was Mr. Gibb who was doling out the niceties, not everyone’s favorite cranky critic. But of course.

What got me is that Robin Gibb considered himself a “good critic”. Good critic, huh? He’s little different than Paula and most of the celebrity guest judges.

All I know is that I tried for 45 minutes to get in to Clay’s line and never could. I tried kim and Ruben a few times each, just to see, and couldn’t get in there either.

I got in on Josh on the first try.

Josh is history. Finally!

I didn’t get to see it. What did everybody sing?

And,

What comment?

And did anyone do “I Started a Joke”? I LOVE that song!!

Wha? No Stayin’ Alive? I don’t know whether to be happy or sad.

I’d like to see Kim leave tomorrow if only for the sake of having three guys left, and thus avoiding cheesy love duets a la Kelly and Justin. Then again, maybe not. The show would end up being 3 minutes of singing and 57 minutes of Ford commercials.

In order of performance (with songs, for Rilchiam):

Josh 1 (Jive Talkin’): Not bad, one of his better performances. Not super though.
Clay 1 (To Love Somebody): Great song. Clay knows how to belt it out.
Kim 1 (I Just Want To Be Your Everything): I wasn’t that impressed. It was probably on the same level as Josh.
Ruben 1 (Nights On Broadway): I liked the fact that it was a little more up temp than Ruben’s usual choices.
Josh 2 (To Love Somebody): Better than song 1. I liked Clay’s rendition better, but this wasn’t bad at all.
Clay 2 (Grease): Unlike alot of people, I enjoyed this song. Clay showed he doesn’t mind having some fun on stage, even if it means poking fun at himself a little.
Kim 2 (Emotion): Again, it was good, but not as good as in the past.
Ruben 2 (How Can You Mend a Broken Heart): Well done. Not as different as his first song, but he sang it well.

Top 2: Clay, Ruben
Bottom 2: Josh, Kim.

Kim is better overall, but I think Josh had a better night last night. Whether it will cost her the boot, I don’t know. I think it will be closer than expected though. Josh had his best night in a while, and Kim had her worst.

Thanks, evilhomer.

But what did Clay say to/about Simon?

Did Tamyra go off BEFORE Nikki McKibbon? I could have sworn the final three boots went Nikki-Tamyra-Bighairguy.

But as you point out, finishing third or fourth will mean very little in terms of the long term marginal difference; Josh will get a chance at being a country star, and Kimberley Locke will have a modest but successful career as a singer, possibly as a backup for a big act.

Yep. Final three were Nikki McKibbin, Justin Guarini and Kelly Clarkson.

I totally agree. I think Clay has been working really, really hard to get out of the “Broadway” mode and GREASE was one path out. He looked great in his red leather jacket. . . and he did little dance moves for Paula. I think Simon just plain doesn’t like him. Which is fine, I guess, but his personal prejudice is getting in the way of fair judgment. The folks who vote seem to make up for it though.

I’ll use evilhomer’s format, since it will keep me organized.

Josh 1 (Jive Talkin’): I thought it was horrible! He was so off, and he shouldn’t try to run around and sing at the same time. He simply doesn’t have the wind. Besides, he looks like he’s going to bite me. I didn’t like it at all.
Clay 1 (To Love Somebody): Wow, I don’t really like Clay, but I’ve got to admit this was fantastic.
Kim 1 (I Just Want To Be Your Everything): She had a hard time starting out - her tempo was off. I really like Kim, but this just wasn’t great. I liked that she tried to be a little different, and she was sort of laid back and cool.
Ruben 1 (Nights On Broadway): I really liked this one. Very different type of song for him, and he did it well.
Josh 2 (To Love Somebody): Agreed, better than song 1 for Josh. He wasn’t bad, but wasn’t anywhere near Clay.
Clay 2 (Grease): Oh. My. God. I was horrified. From the red leather jacket and shoes, to the goofy hip movements, to the awful faces. And if he’s trying to get away from “Broadway Clay”, why choose a song from a broadway show? Awful, awful, awful.
Kim 2 (Emotion): I liked it, though it sounded as though it was a little forced. Not an easy song to sing, and she fudged the notes to fit it into her range. Just so-so.
Ruben 2 (How Can You Mend a Broken Heart): Excellent.

For the record, I sent most of my votes to Kim last night. I had a terribly easy time getting through. :frowning: I voted for Ruben a couple of times, too.

RickJay, I agree that Kelly was the right one to win last year, but I think Tamyra should have been second. Justin is sort of creepy (IMHO), and Nikki is Kimberly Caldwell with less chops.

OK, the worst part of the night. Did you notice that during the BeeGees retrospective Ryan kept referring to Morris Gibb? MORRIS??? Try Maurice buddy. How totally clueless can he be? Robin looked embarrassed for him.

All, all for the loss of a /

Sorry, Morgainelf, but Ryan’s pronunciation was correct. His name may have been spelled MAURICE, but it is pronounced MORRIS. (And Robin always looks like that!)

Wow, no way???!!!

Ok, can I ask a really dumb question? I thought you could vote anytime after the show on Tuesday until the show on Wednesday, but last night Ryan “Could He Be More Awful” Seacrest said something about phones being open for two hours. I assume that means you can only vote for the two hours after the show, but I wanted to check.

Oh, and I thought Clay and Ruben were great, Kim’s second song was quite good, and while Josh was better than he had been before, he is out of his league.

Clay should not dance (or whatever he was trying to do with his hisp). And he should keep his freakin’ eyes all the way open.

I do want to see him win, so that the style consultant’s heads will explode.
