Preach it! Who would’ve thunk 30 years ago that the biggest hit on television in the 21st century would be a cross between The Brady Bunch Variety Hour and Star Search?
I’ve always loved the cheese factor of the group numbers, it’s the former high school choir kid in me I suppose.
But this year’s group sucks together, I swear. You just saw the top 4, 3 guys and 1 chick just like season 2 right? Check out the difference here and Clay, Ruben, Josh and Kim had to make do with disco! Same week with Season 5 singers, much much better than what we saw last night. Other season’s contestants just had more fun with the group sings, it always appeared by this time that friendships were growing and they were enjoying themselves during the group numbers, having fun with the chance to show off different aspects of their talents for a moment.
I wonder if the additional time spent doing Itunes studio recordings means less time available for group rehearsals perhaps. Maybe there’s a new less talented person in charge of arrangements and choreography, or maybe this year’s group just has zero cohesiveness.
Half right. I saw this week’s. I only started watching the show last year and have no idea what they did in season 2. I will watch the clips you linked to once I’m off the phone.

People Magazine theorizes that the reason this season sucks so much is because all the contestants were so polished and stage ready when they began that we haven’t witnessed any growth. Carly, David Cook, Syesha, David Archuleta…they seemed like semi-pros when they started.
It’s akin to watching a group of amateur athletes competing in the Olympic games vs. watching NBA All Stars. The latter brings in the highest level of talent, for sure, but the former is so much more interesting and exciting to watch.

The contestants in those clips really look like they’re having a good time, you’re definitely right about that. I haven’t seen many of the group sings this year, but what I have seen has been dismal.
Ya know, I just noticed that David Cook plays his guitar, um, backwards. That is, he holds it the opposite hands from what I think most people do. How common or unusual is that? Is he a lefty?
Yep, he’s just a left-handed guitar player. There are plenty of them around. Paul McCartney plays left handed, as did Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, and many others.
I think the distillation process has failed. When there were 10 .I thought there was an interesting mix of talents and abilities. But the blonde that offered a Carley Simon thing is gone. The Irish girl girl with a pretty big voice is gone. They committed the crime of being snotty to the judges ,especially Simon. That is a poor move for a contender.
Whats left. Another black Whitney want to be. Another semi rock singer and a boring crooner. They will not be successful . Once the Idol push is used up they will be back where they were.
