American Idol 5/13 and 5/14

Okay, it’s down to three, and it’s a tough call as to which one will go home this week. It could be Syesha but could also be Archie. I think David Cook will remain in the #1 position.

I just had a horrifying realization – what if next week came down to Syesha vs. Archuletta? I can’t imagine any human staying awake for three David A. songs without some David C. to keep things moving, and although I like Syesha, she can be a little snore-inducing at times as well. We may never actually find out who wins!

Some song spoilers…
David Cook

* Simon Cowell chose: “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack
* David chose: “The World I Know” by Collective Soul
* The producers chose: undetermined

Syesha Mercado

* Randy Jackson chose: “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys
* Syesha Chose: undetermined
* The producers chose: undetermined

David Archuleta

* Paula Abdul chose: “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel
* David chose: “With You” by Chris Brown
* The producers chose: “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg
The only comment I have is…WTF is Simon Cowell smoking?

I think he wants Archuleta to win, and that’s an almost impossible task for David C.

Thanks for posting this, I didn’t feel like watching tonight, and now I have to see how David Cook manages to swing this song. I’m willing to bet that he’ll get over this hurdle.

I disagree. It is an excellent choice, and David Cook will leave the audience dizzily swooning and cheering for a long long time. He has the range, the power, and the nuance to do it. I just hope he doesn’t yank the already sufficiently high notes to artificially high levels with his trademark step-up. If he can discipline himself in that regard, he’ll lock himself into the finale.

Update on Syesha:

Randy Jackson chose: “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys
Syesha Chose: “Fever” by Peggy Lee
The producers chose: “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell

I am hoping for something really unexpected and impressive tonight.

In Swedish Idol 2006 (?) there was a guy who actually somewhat reminds me of David A. Technically good, but bored me to tears, chose songs like Against All Odds (which should be banned from all Idol shows everywhere). For judges’ choice, he was given Crazy by Gnarls Barkley – and suddenly I sat up and took notice. Loved it.

Swedish Idol has had some really great singers.

Here’s my wishlist:

I think Cook should go home this week so he can get down to making the kind of music he wants without suffering the restraint of being the Idol winner. He has what he must have wanted all along- exposure and the ear of record companies. Does anyone really believe he has any interest in stumping for the American Idol powerhouse? I can see him quickly getting tired of the pre-packaged songs and Idol publicity machine. The public should just let him go, which will be the best thing for him.

Archuletta has absolutely zero charisma, and it doesn’t even look like he can fake it. The Idol has to have some sort of personality for photo shoots, interviews, cheesy appearances, etc. He always looks like he’s just trying not to vomit whenever he’s out there and not singing. And although he has a good voice, the tone of voice is sort of irritating and he can’t sell a song. He has one gesture- right arm slightly bent at the elbow, palm up- this is how he expresses every emotion he comes across in a song. He might as well be a cardboard cutout.

Which leaves Syesha. Very nice voice, pretty, and clearly has the personality to sell a performance, whether it’s on Top 40 or in live theater. She’s not the best singer the Idol stage has ever seen, or even in the top three, but she’s the closest thing to a ‘total package’ that’s left at this point. She’d simply eat up the Idol attention and the cameras love her.

I’d be fine with either David going home this week as long as Syesha won the big magilla.

Producer’s choice for David Cook is rumored to be

“American Woman” by The Guess Who

Here’s the TMZ list:

David Archuleta – “And So it Goes” by Billy Joel. “With You” by Chris Brown. “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg.
David Cook – “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack. “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot. “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith.
Syesha Mercado – “If I Ain’t Got You” By Alicia Keys. “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell (from “Happy Feet”). “Fever” – which has been covered by everyone.

Well, that was a boring waste of a song choice. (David A) Sounds like every song he’s ever chosen for himself.

Jesus, did Simon just think, “Hmm, what’s the worst possible dogshit I could force this kid to sing?” What a horrifically stupid choice.

That was a trainwreck. Not his fault, though. Simon was deliberately trying to sabotage him.

Simon did pick an interesting song for someone to do an alt version of. David C impressed me for having more pure vocal ability than I knew he had.

David A is the same shit every time. Either you want to see a choir boy closing his eyes and mouthing words he barely understands in a dripping ballad, or you don’t.

I thought David C. hammered it.

I have to eat my words: David C did very well. He showed a broader range of vocal ability with that song, as cricetus wrote.
He brought a tear to my eye.

I’ve come to accept David Cook as the presumptive American Idol.

Ouch. Not good, not good, not good, David A. When the judges admit you’re not believable…

Well, at least David A tried something different. Too bad it was a dumb song and a mediocre performance.

Love “Fever.” One of the sexiest songs ever.
