American Idol - Barry Manilow

For those of you who are curious…

The bottom 3 were

Fantasia, Jennifer, and LaToya

The one who went home was

Jennifer

She didn’t deserve to go tonight but she certainly deserved to go. Good times. Fantasia should’ve gone tonight though, and we were so close. (yes, John is horrible but he wasn’t in the running.)

I loved all three divas, but I voted for only one–Jennifer. I didn’t see any “shit don’t stink” vibe from her AT ALL.

That being said,

That pretty much sums it up for me. I seem calm, but I’m anything but that.

Don’t be surprised if I quit watching AI because of this. But, there’s always George and I can always support him. And should he get shafted, I’ll support Fantasia.

I love Fantasia. I mean, I just love her, but I wouldn’t have been upset if she had been the one to leave. I will buy her cd. I am her slave, musically.

But Jennifer still needed to win me over, and dammit, I wanted her to get the opportunity.

DAMN!
They should let the judges votes count for a percentage.

Thanks, **Amazinggrace. ** I’m very surprised.

The show will be more interesting having a wider variety of singers than having several of the same Whitneywannabe mold. For this reason, I do not consider it either tragic or surprising that Jennifer is gone.

It’s all about the defensive voting, not the talent. Why are we surprised, being the third season and all?

With JPL and Matt gone, the teenybopping redialers have only John left to fixate upon, Jasmine’s got the gorgeous to look at/asian voting block thing going on, and I’d wager Diana has a pretty fierce defensive fanbase of semi-country folks. Adults who appreciate a higher caliber usually don’t redial frantically for two hours.

I liked Jennifer, figured she’d be in it until the top four, but I’m not surprised y’know?

Maybe people have different opinions on who had the “best voice of the show.” Frankly, I’m bored with googly-eyed divas, and happen to like John Stevens.

Maybe they should have a show on Bravo for adults who appreciate a higher caliber of music. I know 40-year-old women who woul wipe the floor with any of these contestants and might be able to compete on a show for and featuring grown ups.

Oprah did have a pop contest for people in their 30s and 40s. It only lasted for an episode or two. My friend’s uncle was on it. I wouldn’t mind if it was a continuous thing.

Y’know, when I was flipping through the channels this evening, I came across Entertainment Tonight, and they had on one of the executive producers of this show, who was shown multiple times saying stuff like “America chose wrong tonight,” and “I think I should warn you that you’re going to be pretty surprised at who goes.” I was wondering what all the fuss was about, since I don’t watch the show, but I guess this thread gives me an idea…

Well, it was on Oprah!

I totally agree. The Divas cancel each other out. Jennifer seemed to be able to do nothing but belt! There’s only so much of that you can take. Besides which, she always seemed angry about something! Give me a break!

My guess is that most voters are deciding along the lines of ‘who did I most enjoy listening to while they performed’ – which includes style of singing and appearance and personality rather than just pure vocal ability. I think LaToya/Jennifer/Fantasia were hurt because they fell into a similar ‘style’ of singer, while the other four are distinct from one another.

It’s like the ‘Best in Show’ category at a dog show. It has come down to three poodles, a golden retriever, a cocker spaniel, an Irish setter, and a Yorkshire terrier. Now, professional judges know they are supposed to decide who is best by comparing each dog to the ideal for that category – but this is being judged by amateurs. I’ll bet a large percentage of the audience simply don’t like poodles, and so they are voting for whichever of the others they like best. And the votes of those who do like poodles are being split by their being three of them.

So having Jennifer go this week should ensure LaToya and Fantasia make it to the final two: less splitting of votes AND any fans of theirs who had grown complacent about voting just received a wake up call for sure.

Aiiee! What the hell?!?! It’s Armageddon, I tell ya.

[Special Ed voice] No! You people vote bad!!! [/Special Ed voice]

Mr. Rilch was saying the same thing. Now, I can see where he’s coming from, kinda. For one thing, I know that there’s a voting bloc called the “Red Pens”, who made a pact that whichever of JPL or JS got voted off first, that one’s fans would transfer their power-dialing efforts to the one who remained.

But as I said to him, "Look. I thought that, by voting for John, I was helping him come in second-to-last. Not fourth or whatever his rank turned out to be. I honestly thought that it was like this: a few thousand Jo[h]n fans, even if they all dialed continuously for the whole two hours, still couldn’t offset millions of people voting a dozen times each for the divas. I thought we were outnumbered and outgunned.

“But apparently not. Now is that because there are more people who like JS than Jennifer? Or is it that, out of her presumably larger fanbase, fewer people were motivated to call in their votes, or call in enough votes? If she’s all that, why weren’t people frantically dialing for her?”

I really did like his performance last night. Yes, it was flawed; I admit that. But I don’t watch this show to analyze singing styles. I watch to be entertained. JS touched my heart, and those of a lot of other females, and we voted as we did because of that.

And as far as teenbopper fangirls, well, guess what? That’s the demographic that buys CDs.

I think he’s gonna sleep with one eye open from now on.

And now I really feel bad for him, even more than I did when I posted last night. Besides the backlash I mentioned, now I fear that he’s just gonna keep getting Peter Principled along, till he gets to a song he absolutely can’t do and perform as bad as or worse than he did on Motown night, and then he’ll go out on a very bad note. I wouldn’t have been entirely sorry to see him go tonight, because at least he would have had a good sing-out.

Mrs. Six voted for the first time last night. For John Stevens. About a dozen times. Her reason? He did a really bad job. And because he did a really bad job, there wouldn’t be many people voting for him. So she had to vote for him to make up for the people who wouldn’t be voting for him.

I tried to point out to her that the point was to vote for the person you think did the best job, either over all or that one night. We both liked Latoya’s performance best, so, silly me, I thought she would be voting for Latoya. I obviously don’t understand how the voting is supposed to work.

I guess I must be in the minority in liking both Jasmine and Diana better than the either Fantasia or Jennifer. Then again, I’m speaking as a very casual music fan. Based on what I read here, I obviously know quite a bit less about music than most.

After last night, I thought, once again, that we’d very soon have an all female AI; the difference in performances among the women and the men just seems that obvious to me. This won’t be the first time that I’ve been completely out of touch with what most people think.

Paula: You obviously don’t understand the meaning of the words “popularity contest”. If you allow the general populace to determine the outcome, it is pretty much by definition a popularity contest. People are going to vote for their favorites, not make some objective judgement about the singing ability (as if that were even possible) and vote based on that.

I think many of us would be happy to have a range of styles on the show. It’s just that, other than George, the people performing with other styles just don’t happen to be very goood.

I also think the whole voting thing as it is now is stupid. I just want to watch the damn show and move on, not spend the next two hours speed-dialing. Can’t they set up a “one-phone one-vote” system?

Now I’m *really * convinced Clay was robbed last season…there’s obviously a HUGE problem with the voting system.
