American Idol - Feb 19, 20, 21 (Open Spoilers)

My irrational hate this year is toward Syesha. What is up with the yoga pose on the couch, and the looking back and forth from Ryan to the cameras while she’s talking to him? Plus, she shrieks. Icky.

I only heard the last few notes, but they were bad.

(I’m dividing my attention between AI, the puppy, and the lunar eclipse.)

It takes some serious lack of talent to make Phil Stacey’s version of “Tobacco Road” sound great by comparison.

It’s almost gone. I’m also seeing like a double moon kinda thingy. Do you see it too or am I hallucinating?

I agree. Everything about her is stagey and unnatural. I think she must be one of the “ringers” this show is rumored to plant among the contestants and she’s obviously going to get heavily pimped but she comes off as overly rehearsed and fake.

Love her. You don’t have to be black, just big-voiced for me to like it.

Carly kicked ass again, and Simon’s just being one. (again)

Did America’s #1 family show just make a blowjob joke?

Too many Davids and too many sound-alike blondes.

Amy was the absolute worst. Gah! She’s gotta be gone. Her and one of those blondes.

Ryan: “Paula, you’ve been in front of millions, how do you control the nerves?”
Paula: “Booze.”

I came in even later today, so I have to judge mostly on the recap. Not really fair, but whatevs:

Kristy Lee - boring boring boring infinity
Joanne - Just OK. Fine.
Alaina - looks creepily like Carrie Underwood. Not my thing at all.
Amanda - Fun!
Amy - someone bumped in H’Wood is really pissed right now
Brooke - Ms. Leif Jr. More weird than anything
Alexandra - seems good, but what’s with the bouncy shoulders?
Kady - good but Dullsville
Asia’h - Lotsa fun, seems genuine
Ramiele - capable but no spark
Syesha - liked her, where’s the hate comin’ from? OK, maybe TOO polished
Carly - She’s brilliant but I kind of agree with Simon - she could do way better

I don’t feel I saw enough to really have favorites yet, but I enjoy watching Asia’h, Syesha and Carly. And Rocker Nurse. Maybe Alexandra but I didn’t see enough of her. Of the whole 24 (if I can remember), I’m leaning toward:

  1. Jason Castro
  2. David A., Asia’h
  3. Syesha, Carly, Rocker Nurse, Michael Johns
  4. maybe David H. and Alexandra if I had seen them sing
  5. Everyone else

Some of the girls I liked more than the others, but I thought that was the most boring night of American Idol I’ve watched in a while. The talent level was about the same as the guys, but I just found the performances & personalities to be more interesting and varied last night.

The only person who really stood out to me tonight was Amanda, but the Janis Joplin voice got old for me after the second time I heard her. On top of that, the scat portion was an absolute failure. I agree with the people who like her personality & the fact that she doesn’t fit the typical AI mold, but she is extremely one-dimensional.

What a let down. No one overly impressed me.

I cringed my way through Amy’s attempt at channeling Patsy Cline. I could see what she was going for, but oh my was it off. If people base their votes on that performance alone, Amy should just book her plane ticket home now.

Joanne was very disappointing. I guess I’m just expecting a big old gospel voice to come out of that body and it’s jarring to hear a thinner, less expressive one.

I wasn’t feeling the love for Carly nor did I get why Randy and Paula were falling over themselves over her. I thought she oversang the song altogether and that final note was really, really bad.

Simon needs to pare back the crippling comments. He does offer some sound, honest advice. But at time he ventures too far. “Who should we compare her to? A pencil?” That’s not very helpful, Simon.

Oh, and I didn’t think “Groovy Kind of Love” was all that bad…

Oh, btw, my local news just had a segment, “Where was Carly?” They noted that there were only 11 girls watching the boys. They then reported that Idol didn’t offer an explanation as to why she wasn’t there.

Thanks, guys.

Sheesh…If it’s as boring as y’all are saying, maybe I’ll just go watch my rental of American Gangster instead. I’m sure it won’t be dull.

If I were in charge…

Buh-bye to Jason Yeager and Luke Menard. Yaaaaawn. Dishonorable mention for Chikezie and Garret Haley, but at least they weren’t so boring. Plus Garret needs to hang around long enough to grow that moustache in before he begins his career as Weird Al Jr.

Buh-bye to Amy and Joanne. Big dishonorable mention for Kady, who was actually worse than Joanne, but somehow I think Kady is capable of more, and Joanne isn’t going to amount to much.

After watching these two shows, and then seeing Josiah Leming perform on the Ellen show, I’m pretty sure they booted the most talented person from the show. The kid is really, really good. And a good songwriter.

Interesting. I thought that was a horrible performance. He can barely play piano, his voice was cracking, and he looks like a hunchback when he sings. On the positive side, I do think it is a decent song.

And to perform on Idol, you have to be able to work with a band. I don’t think his ego is ready to allow that.

As far as tonight’s show, I was pretty disappointed. I liked Nurse Rocker, Carly, and especially Ramiele, whose voice never ceases to amaze me. Not a great performance tonight by any of them but those are the three that stand out in my mind.

It’s the song he sang at his original audition. If his mom has terminal cancer, I’d hope he could find a way to get his ass home.

For last night, C- to everybody.

Pauler is about as useful as a pack of sugar with a glass of tea.
