I know little about it, as I don’t see much television. But I’ve learned a bit over the past few months, as one of my friend’s daughter is now in the process.
She’s only 16. I’ve been doing a couple of things as I listen to the daily drama. She’s been singing for fun all of her life, and only started voice lessons (I suggested them, but, frankly, the folks would’ve started them without my input, I do believe) in the last year.
She’s been shepherded to various karaoke bars and did the Houston Rodeo in the last year, from which experience she’s developed a good stage presence. The one thing she lacks at this point, about which I’ve been hammerin’ her Dad, is live experience with a living, breathing band.
She’s only 16, but she’s such a natural.
I’ve got her demo CD, and I’ve seen her Rodeo performance. And I spent a bit of time in that business myself; I know how looong one can stand by the entrance ramp. Can anybody say Eric Johnson?
Well, they just this week had some sort of huge tryout/audition thing here in Houston for this American Idol thing. She spent a few days camping out with her aunt to get in. I plotted a huge color photo of her for a placard they wanted to attract the eyes that buy.
So, now that’s over, and…, she made the cut! I don’t know what this means, really, but she’s on to the next step. They’re going to fly her off to la-la-land, and we’ll see what happens next.
Go, Kiira, go! Go, go, go Kiira!
