American Patriotism is out of control.

Man, I had this great, snotty, really insulting reply all ready, but my conscience just got the better of me. Sigh.

Lobley, you are wrong. Americans, as a group, are not any more patriotic than any other nationality. People are just like that: they make the kneejerk assumption that whatever group they belong to is better than any other group out there. The group could be “Americans.” Or it could be “Christians.” Or it could be “Ford owners.”

Most people can get beyond that, some can’t. You’ve had a bunch of bad experiences with people who can’t. But you are working with a skewed sample. You say that this is an opinion formed by, “…years of talking in newsgroups, chat rooms, message boards, and seeing it in the media.” lobley, how many actual Americans do you know? Chat rooms and message boards are not the best way to get to know a group of people. Hell, if I had to judge humans as a species based off of my experiences in chat rooms alone, I’d assume we’re all a bunch of psychotic, raving perverts. You can’t trust the media for an accurate depiction of life in another culture, because any media is only going to show you the stuff that will earn them money: the violent, the sexy, the controversial. You know, interesting stuff. People being polite and reasonable doesn’t make good television. In other words, even though you meet these uber-patriotic Americans on-line and see them on the TV, that’s not really an accurate presentation of what most Americans are really like.

The relative patriotism of Americans aside, I think you need to examine your own behavior in this thread. You’re having a serious meltdown here over the fact that a bunch of people disagreed with you. Not attacked you, although there was some of the later (and more to come, I’m sure), but merely disagreed with you. Although I disagreed with your OP, I didn’t find it offensive. However, your first response in this thread, “I am afraid the replies to this post prove what I was saying. I can see you guys egos are hurt. It’s obvious.” That really pissed me off. No one had done anything to this point but disagree and ask if you had any evidence to support your position, and you come back with a patronizing line about how fragile their (and, since I agreed with them, mine by extension) egos were and it was obvious that they were only arguing with you because you’re right. That’s insulting: you are telling people you know their mind better than they do, you are dismissing their opinions (while angrily demanding the right to your own), and you are completely avoiding any direct response to the issues they brought up.

Well, since you now seem to be in the middle of a full-on board melt-down, I doubt you’ll actually read any of this post. But in case you do, here’s my advice. Learn that disagreement is not an attack. Be willing to question your own beliefs. Never say that you will “always believe” something, it shows that you have a closed mind, and that arguing with you is pointless. And, most importantly, stop posting for a while. Ask the mods to suspend your posting priviledges if you really can’t help yourself. And lurk. Get a better feel for how the boards work. 90% of the flack you just got in here didn’t come from people angry about your opinion of America, but from statements like, “I don’t need to supply information as this is just an opinion, my opinion.” This isn’t how the SDMB works. Everyone has a right to his or her opinion, so long as they can defend it. Using cites is a really good way to do this. If you want to say Americans are too patriotic, do a Google search, look for studies comparing crimes against foreigners in the US with similar crimes in Europe. Find news articles from objective sources that support your opinion. If you can’t find any, maybe you should rethink your opinion.

I’m still not offended! I’m not offended at the OP, I’m not offended at generalizations, I’m not offended by the OPer’s loss of sanity later in the thread. I’m puzzeled by it all, but not offended.

So there.

Still not offended.

I’m not so much offended now, too. I was a little irritated, but I went to watch TV and eat a bowl of soup. I took a nap, then come back to witness this vivid display of a brain meltdown which absolutely amused…nay, titillated me.

Of course, reading this verbal aneurysm made up for the original irritation I felt in the beginning of the thread.

raises a beer and toasts lobley

lobley, it’s already been said, much more eloquently, by Miller, but you sound like you need help.

There’s nothing horrible about getting disagreed with. It’s all part of an exchange of ideas. You support your argument, others support theirs. Sometimes you realize that there’s an angle you hadn’t seen, a part of the issue you hadn’t considered. Something that invalidates your position. If it happens, you realize that you made a mistake, you say “sorry guys, I was wrong,” and you go on. No one will hold it against you.

The issue of supporting your argument is all part and parcel of the way debates are conducted on these boards. In addition to helping to prevent debates from degenerating into shouting matches (they sometimes do anyway, but at least we try) they encourage readers to learn more about the issue at stake. Legitimate sources might call someone’s attention to an issue, or a side of an issue, they might never have noticed or considered.

Finally, this is just a message board. If it’s become a dominant force in your life, you need to get away from it. Seek help, in all seriousness, there are people who can help you.

Best wishes

A mind is a terrible thing to lose.

I hate you- I literally have tears rolling down my face and am laughing so hard I’m having trouble breathing. My parrot in the next room heard me and now HE’S laughing.

I kept thinking “Man, that’s some odd ranting going- who does that sound like?” and your post put me into freaking orbit.

As to the OP, I think he/she should “knock down THAT fargin wall, knock down THAT fargin wall, and knock down THAT fargin wall!”

Oh man- thanks for the much needed laugh.

Zette

PS- if this wasn’t so long, it would be a great sig line:

"In fact I no longer give a shinpad if you hate my guts because this funking Message board is too full of snobby barstewards and is probably not worth the attention I waste on it. "

DR, that had me laughing like a loon for a good five minutes.

And you’re only saying that because you care, right?

I think he’s saying:

***THER ARRGE NOW WOMEN ON THEIS ISLE WIFH ME, AND THAS’S WHY I’M MADE AT THE FURKING AMURIKANS ***
[SUB]it’s just shorthand. [/sub]

Lobley,

You have a BAD case of American envy.
Get over yourself.

M’kay?

lobley = 2002’s FreakFreely.

Same enlightened attitude towards people different from him- same use of stereotypes, same semi-insane melt-down.

Only question remaining is will the troll run away, get banned or be carted off by the men in the white jackets and butterfly nets?

Lets see  + +:smack: = lobley. Ever notice when school is out the troll population doubles?

lobley, you funny little manx creature, you, listen to my advice. It’s very simple:

THINK BEFORE YOU POST.

Just that. Think before you post.

Oh, and I need to point out this from your second post in this thread:

Now look. As you know, this is a messageboard based around the Straight Dope of Cecil Adams. It has a generally empirical/scientific mindset. If you state an opinion about somethign which is measurable in some way, people will ask for evidence. The request for evidence is in face the first resort of people who know the smell of bullshit, but just want to be sure. Because it could be donkey shit.

If you’re worried about investing too much anger and grrrr into the board, in a crazy compulsive stylee, then for fuck’s sake try your best to step back. For a start, you could not post new threads on your ill-thought out opinions about Americans (or other large heterogenous groups of people). You could try to avoid the subject entirely. Try joining in some threads about favourite ice cream flavours. Try joining in threads about nice places you’ve been on holiday.

But at the end of it all, you’ve got to accept that if you post generalisations and prejudice, you will be called on it, and you will have your prejudices challenged. If you aren’t up for that, you’ll have to go and find another messageboard where you’ll be happier.

Or, in short, “either shut up or fuck off, please

British Ales are my favorite beers. I’d give 20 bucks for a Flagg Porter right now.

And that’s from a Texan. And an Aggie.

At least our cats have tails

Must…not…generalize…about…Isle of Mannites…

Have some Mannitol and chill, babe.

Psst … isn’t it “Manxmen”?

Well lots of people have passed away (no-one has lived beyond about 120).
So I guess we can say scientifically ‘everybody dies.’
Here we see evidence being used to justify an assertion.
OK so far.

A number of mistakes have now appeared in your argument.

  1. You present no supporting evidence for your statement.
  2. Pedantic actually means:
  • insisting on literal meaning (at the expense of a wider view), or
  • to rate technical knowledge above everything

You are in fact waffling:

  • verbose, aimless or ignorant talk

As I said on another thread, are you a **young **person?
The above ‘logic’ is quite scary, especially if you are allowed to drive or have a position of responsibility.

‘For the sake of argument’ is normally used to introduce some analysis. Here is an example:
For the sake of argument - if aliens were actually here, what would they be doing?
(You could then try to see if anything has happened that supports your initial hypothesis.)

Instead you use the phrase to introduce some **completely made-up **statistics.
You admit these numbers are wild guesses.
You then triumphantly state that your case is proved because of these joke statistics. :wally

I’m afraid the only generalisation here is that all people from the Isle of Man on this message board are giving a very poor impression of themselves.

(Next time: how to present a crude assertion that ‘proves’ itself if people disagree with it)

In the immortal words of Denis Leary,

USA! USA! USA! U–

Oh, yeah, uh, DNFTT.

The OP is a fucked-up dude.

Lump me in with the patriots. America errs a lot, but that’s no reason to be self-loathing. I love this country.
