American Politics
Not really. Most politically aware people I know in the UK are pretty concerned about the US leadership with regard to foreign policy.

(And to a person, they want Bush out, and almost all favour Obama.)

That, and it’ll (hopefully) be nice not to have a hillbilly in the WH for the first time what, 16 years? Yeah, GW is an odd mix of blue-blood and hillbilly, but a hillbilly he be none-the-less.

And ditto what Doors sayeth.

Four years ago during the election I took a hiatus from the boards. Granted, the vitriol level was much higher during that election cycle.

It’s early yet. We’ve not yet begun to fling the monkey poo.

Just wait.

The US is still the major power on earth. Everyone I know follows US news regularly. There are a lot of threads on the topic (especially from the point of view of a Hillary supporter such as myself), still, who is the POTUS, is of the utmost import for the whole planet. These primaries are but the first step on the way to a change for the better, I hope.

Actually, to my mind, you have the emphasis backwards. GW is an odd mix of hillbilly and blue-blood, but a blue-blood he be nonetheless.

In other words, the greatest damage the Republicans have done recently has been to cast GW as a good ol’ boy, Family Values type, while ignoring the fact that he and his administration are raping us little people on a daily basis.

It’s ingenious, really. Cast the great conflict in this country as Right vs. Left, when in reality, it’s the same as it’s always been: rich scumbags getting richer off the blood and taxes of the proles.

I hope we’re finally wising up.

And well you should be as an Irishman, seeing as how there are more of you here than in Ireland. And it doesn’t surprise me that O’Bama should be popular with the leprechuan stompers.

Yeah? Well British food tastes like overcooked ass.
And you know this how?

The world does care about ‘oo wins this next election. If yer fink England won’t be affected at all, ffen yor bein’ ignorant.

So sayeth The Dialectizer.

I’m of two minds about the OP. My first mind says: I feel ya, chowder, I’m sick of all the political threads too. Sweet fancy Moses, can’t you all go outside a play for a bit? But my second mind says: no likee, no clickee, with less boo fuckin’ hoo. Works for me.

It has to be said.

I am fucking sick and tired of all the threads about Clinton, McCain, Obama and all the fucking rest of the various twats running for the the US presidents job.

Realising that this is an American based MB and that a good percentage of posters are American I have no alternative but to suck it up.

Even so it gets on my fucking nerves, nobody gives a rats arse who wins (outside of the US) and that is the fucking truth.

Jesus on a rocking horse, give it a rest willya

Ya know what really pisses me off? The way the Dope sends their minions to my house and forces me to read all of the threads I don’t like. Fuckers.

Dude, ever thought about starting a thread about European politics?

For the anti-Americanism of the OP I hope that Obama’s first act as president is to fire Gordon Brown and bring Blair back. He does what he’s told and shows us the respect we de[del]mand[/del]serve.

Well, as a UK-resident American citizen, I’d say you’ve got to admit there’s truth in both sides of this story. While the election clearly matters a great deal to people of all countries (and is IMO one of the most exciting ones in decades, since both of the candidates are clearly decent men), it’s almost undeniable that this place becomes insufferable for moderates whenever there’s a significant US election on. The rancour that is generated by divisions of almost indistinguishable size just boggles the mind. In just the primary season we’ve seen pit thread after pit thread casting Clinton supporter implacably against Obama supporter, and this despite the fact that there’s almost no clear air visible between the two in policy terms.

It certainly seems to be a fact that American politics at present engenders quite unreasonable amounts of polarisation and animosity between people who really don’t have that much substantial to argue about. Indeed, a large part of Obama’s popularity (in my view, at least) appears to stem from a desire to move on from this sort of niggling, vexatious attitude. This doesn’t seem a contentious claim, either - I’ve seen posts from several self-described American moderates (and even avowed partisans) on this board bemoaning the start of the silly season way back in December. It’d be nice to think that an Obama vs. McCain election might in some way transcend this nasty tendency, but having viewed the response to the primaries it’s hard to be all that confident.

Clearly chowder speaketh ex rectum when he says nobody over here cares about your elections - I’d say we’re all very interested (at this point we may even be more interested than the average American, not having had to put up with 8 months of saturation coverage already). I don’t know if we could cope with the sort of stress you guys put yourselves through over it all, though. So I suppose if I were to try to salvage something from chowder’s rather, um … forthright OP, I’d say: perhaps have a breather for a month, before getting totally stuck into the full campaign craziness. I’m pretty sure it can’t be avoided entirely, but I do think you need a break.

Jesus, looking at the state of the locals, all I can say is thank God for immigration! Even the baby’s hideous!

Fantastic. As soon as the Guardian endorses Obama, I’m voting for McCain.

Always nice to see people voting on principles rather than basing their choice on trivialities. Shows integrity.
