I didn’t want to hijack the other thread, so here’s this one.
I used to work with an older gentleman who grew up back East, who said that when he was a kid he liked a concentrated yeast extract. But I can’t remember the name. It definitely wasn’t Vegemite, Marmite, or Bovril. I’m pretty sure it didn’t have ‘mite’ in the name, which precludes Promite. IIRC, it was an American product called ‘Veg [pronounced ‘veeg’, by him]-something’.
I hope it tastes more like Marmite! I’ve always wondered what was wrong with this backward country that, alone among the English-speaking nations, it cold not manage to produce a yeast-extract. (Don’t they sell Promite, at least, in Canada? Or am I imagining things?) Now I feel an urgent need to try American yeast extract. Why, I’m feeling almost patriotic!
