Anybody tried Vitam-R? And other yeast extract musings

I see it’s been nearly 3 years since I last started a thread praising yeast extracts. Time to correct that, now that I’m in a philosophical mood to wax eloquent yet again on my obsession regarding those tasty, tasty products.

I used up the last smears in my 2.5 kilo bucket of Vegemite last weekend. I ordered that one back in early December 2013. So a new bucket has been ordered and should arrive soon!

It lasted longer than I expected, but I’ve gone thru three 500 mg jars of marmite in that same timespan, along with 2.5 tubes of cenovis (sounds like a Swiss pharmaceutical company rather than the helvetican gustatory delight that it is).

I find the vegemite best for cooking with; adding to stews, chowders, soups and so forth. It’s wondrous what it adds to a bolognese sauce. Or a pea soup.

I favor the marmite (english variety) for topping toasted breads/bagels along with butter, aged cheeses, egg and onion, along with other fixings.

And the cenovis is best on english muffins with butter, when I want to indulge in the euphoric recall of the flavor of my mom’s pot roasts, where the meat drippings, carrots, onions, and potatoes were all slowly reduced to a fine, tasty paste on the bottom of the Nesco roaster.

I should try the NZ version of marmite again; my last experience with it was long ago, before my palate could really appreciate the subtle nuances of different yeast spreads. Then along came the great NZ marmite crisis, which kept it off the shelves for a few years.

Promite, Mighty Mite, and Aussie Mite never did do it for me, though. Not unless I was out of the other spreads, of course.

Anybody tried Vitam-R? I can’t imagine a low sodium version of a yeast spread. It is advertised as vegan, so I expect the yeast used in its production isn’t raised on beef broth. Amazon claims to be able to provide it, I’ll put it on my Xmas wish list.

Have you tried Bovril?

Got to stop reading foodie posts before I eat breakfast … <drool>

You bet. I just don’t consider it a yeast extract since they went back to making it with meat again. I know it’s supposed to be a drink, but I prefer spreading it on bread.
