I ordered my absentee ballot. Have you?
For those of us Americans residing abroad you still have the right to vote in federal elections using your last valid US address. Many states also permit you to vote for state and/or local elections too.
The Federal Voting Assistance Project is the official government-run program designed to assist military service members and Americans residing abroad with voter registration and ballot requests. Personally I use the web interface at Overseas Vote Foundation because I can fill out the forms online and then print them out. FVAP has you print blank forms to fill out by hand.
Depending upon your home state you may be able to request and/or receive a ballot by email and may even be able to cast your absentee ballot as an email attachment.
Note an important change:
You may make a request to receive ballots for a maximum of one year at a time. This is a change from prior law which allowed a request to be valid for up to four years.
You may be able to submit your completed ballot request to a US embassy or consulate and they can send your request via diplomatic pouch to hit the US mail stateside. That could provide a little extra security if your local postal system is not so reliable.
