"America's Ballroom Challenge"

A new season of the PBS show America’s Ballroom Challenge starts tonight. This is what dancing looks like when both partners know what they’re doing.

Thanks for the info! I really want to watch this.

Guess I’m the only one watching – y’all could have seen Tony Doviano (sp.?) kick some serious rumba ass last night.

I was watching. What I find amazing is the split-second timing the dancers have and the speed at which they’re capable of moving. Some of the dances are a little mannered and conventional for my tastes, some are not. I tend to like the Latin dances and the American swing dancing much more than the rest. The conventional ballroom dancing bores me to tears. I’m sure it’s fun to do, but it’s not much fun to watch.

I also think they would be wise to shed the “ballroom” term from their moniker. Makes me think of the foxtrot, the minuet, the box step. D-U-L-L in short. Which the show itself is not, when it’s doing the Latin and swing dances.

Yeah, isn’t it amazing? I esp. love the first round when there’s six couples on the floor at once, hearing the music for the first time – improvising their routines (though obviously they’ve worked out some of the set moves in advance) and avoiding each other at the same time.
