America's Got Talent is baaaaaaaack!

You never see any of the other cards. My belief is that they were all the same card.

Well I guess if they’re going to make an appearance it will have to be next week since the following week is the finals. If they do include more wild cards I’ll be very interested to see who makes it.

Jackie Evancho came in a close second a couple of years ago, and seems to be doing better than the winner, Michael Grimm

In the vast majority of cases, I’m not really interested in karaoke singers on these talent shows. Even if they bring their own twist to it, I never like it better than the original. Plus, they don’t really have to come up with anything new. The other types of acts all have to keep coming up with more exciting original tricks and performances, but the singers just pick another song from the back catalog. To be fair, I would prefer that singers have to perform original music. Then they would have to create something new and better each week just like all the other acts.

Although Grace’s voice isn’t the best, I’m really enjoying her. I feel like she actually has something unique to say through her music, as opposed to being a well-polished, accomplished karaoke singer like all the rest.

Jon Deorenbos

… What!?! His act was really dull as far as I was concerned. Wow, truly shocked by that result.

As a personal favor to me, I would appreciate it if people would spoiler tag how magic acts work. I don’t like to know.

Dang. I’m sad to see Edgar go, and surprised to see Sal go through.

It seems that in order to make it you have to be a singer or magician.

No problem.

I was surprised also. He’s a good high energy performer but his magic trick was less than impressive. I wonder if people realize he makes over $1 million a year in the NFL for working maybe 1 to 2 minutes tops per game.

So, naturally, they make it a point to single out the wild card act on the live show this time.

Crazy Conspiracy Theory Alert:
Howie, Heidi, and Mel B probably chose the act just to get back at Simon in exchange for Simon being able to sign Grace to his record label. Well, the bit about Simon’s record label is almost certainly true; he once admitted that this was the main reason he was ever involved with American Idol.

I was wondering if maybe Passing Zone got the wildcard spot because they got a little bit screwed over by the judges by insisting they include three of them and they couldn’t come up with a very good act. Yes, it is still their responsibility to come up with a good act, and if I had been them I would not have done their last act. I would have said to heck with it, lets go with something awesome even if it doesn’t use three judges.

It was kind of like what happened with Tape Face. Mel chasing Simon around with water lowered his screen time and drastically cut back on getting the judge’s praise. I was happy to see Mel apologize for that.

Yeah, that sucked. And maybe influenced their decision to move him forward, although I think it was the right choice. He doesn’t seem to be the likely winner in the end but he is very entertaining and I’m sure people want to see more of him, just as I’m sure we all will no matter how this contest turns out.

I don’t see Tape Face as the winner either although I would certainly go pay to see a show with him. I find him very entertaining.

I think this year’s winner is very likely to be musical. There’s a lot of strong musical talent and none of the non-musical strikes me as winning material.

I will miss Deadly Games. I didn’t think they would go through but I was hoping. I find them very entertaining as well. I would pay to see a 1 hour show of them too. I recognize that each of their acts has a level of similarity but for me, I don’t know, the way they do it is just absolutely entertaining (subjectively for me).

Most of the winners have been musical. I count Terry Fator in that group. The dog act, another ventriquiloqist, and the Japanese guy are the only non-music acts I can recall. Oh yeah, the magician won didn’t he?

If you count Fator as a musical act, the first six winners were all musical, but none of the last four have been (Olate Dogs, Kenichi Ebina, Mat Franco, Paul Zerdin).

During the ‘every other act is a singer/singing group’ show Monday I got to wondering what other talent might reasonably fit the demands of this type of show.

The killer thing for many other talents is the need to come up with ‘fresh/new’ routines over and over. As in, it’s easy enough for a singer to do a different song, less easy for a contortionist to do much new once they’ve done a few backbends and tucked their feet behind their heads.

But how about musicians? Instrumentalists, I mean, ones who don’t warble along with their playing. How come we never seem to see a straightforward flutist or violinist? Or bagpiper, or whatever.

And what about Impressionists? The only ones I remember on the show were the ones who were ventriloquists.

What other fields of talent have fallen out of favor?

The need to come up with something new is the same problem a lot of acts would have if they won and needed to headline a 1-hour Vegas show. You can have a bit of other people filling time, but it’s your show, so you need to carry 30-45 minutes at least, I would think.

And as you said, once the contortionist has walked on his hands while they are behind his back, what else is he going to do? Which is why I liked the girl - she did a few new things, like shooting the bow with her feet, that implied she was at least trying to expand the repertoire.

Grace Vanderwaal has written her own songs, which is the talent that should be considered. Singing someone else’s song is not much of talent unless it’s an exceptional voice or performance. Tape Face is showing more talent in his original acts than some of these singers IMHO. But this is not so much a talent contest as a popularity contest, which all the contestants should realize. The contestant who gets the people to vote for them should win based on what the contest actually is.

During Tape Face’s performance, what the heck was Mel’s problem? Sheesh what a crank. For god’s sake enjoy yourself and try not to bring down his act.

That was awful of her. Didn’t she wreck someone else’s post performance by getting mad? Tape Face was great. I doubt he can win it all, but he’s still a fantastic creative performer.

I would go see a Tape Face show in a heartbeat. Some really good performances tonight so far.

Am I not entertained?

Yes, yes I am.

Oh and Tape Face

putting the bag over her head because she was being cranky

was brilliant and hilarious.

Wow, if they gave an award for the most improved act then Sal would get it.

I ignored Sofie and Viktor because as soon as they started I immediately thought, “Same old thing. Nothing really new to see.”

I had a hard time hearing Brian for the first half minute or so. When I could hear him and recognized the song, I thought he did do a good job of making it his own.
