America's Got Talent is baaaaaaaack!

The one reason I really liked Grace is that she was able to strongly convey the emotion of the song to me. I could feel her emotion when she sang. Many of the singers on these reality shows lack that quality. They are technically qualified singers, but I don’t feel the meaning of the song from them when they sing it. From a technical perspective, Grace is not as good of a singer as the others performers, but she makes up for it in other ways. Plus, I really admired that she wrote her own songs.

I feel Grace would not do well with songs where she can’t relate to the meaning. If she doesn’t relate to the story being told, I think she would fall flat. Other performers are not like that. Their handler gives them a song, coaches them on how to hit the notes in a certain way, and then they perform it. The meaning of the song isn’t necessarily important to them, and the performance can come across as hollow.

Basically, I feel Grace sings because she wants to say something to the world. Other singers seem like they just want to use singing as a way to make a living. As long as Grace can maintain her unique voice, she’ll do well.

I know what you’re talking about. To me that quality is what Frank Sinatra had above all others. Whether he was singing about sitting heartbroken at a bar at 3 a.m., or about how weather-wise it’s such a lovely day, you felt he was living it. But I have to say this young lady is pretty good at putting an original spin other people’s songs too where she doesn’t sound like she does on her own tunes. Check out her covers of X’s and Oh’s (especially the last two-thirds or so and at the very end) and her unique and thoroughly enjoyable rendition of All About That Bass (song begins at about 40 seconds in and treats us to some of her well-known high notes at about 1:35.

You may be right, but I’d need to see a lyrics sheet before I would know. I never understood a single word she said, until we saw that clip of people on YouTube covering her song.
