America's Got Talent - spoilers

I didn’t think they were horrible, just mediocre. And the only one I really had a problem with was the singer. His performance was weak.

So, the dreadlocked, African-American standards singer was pretty good (and not at all what any expected him to sound like).

Had some rough spots, but with a little coaching, I think he could go far.

I found the pole guy’s shoes distracting. They should’ve been silver as well.

I’ve become jaded by the formula of the show. If they show the preformer talking about how unique his talent is we are forewarned that performer will be awful. If the performer has a hard luck story he or she will go through without a blink form any of the three judges. Do they ever show an act that doesn’t make it last? I don’t believe so, but I’m not about to rewatch.

My thoughts exactly… which I expressed to my husband, who just shook his head and laughed at me.

I only watch the show for the nut and loon freakshow factor… and they’ve been steadily removing that part since the first season.

That guy Leonid on the first couple seasons was why I watched- a guy with some elaborately ornate costuming and byzantine choreography, and then when it all craters, he gets upset and bawls out the judges in a barely intelligible Russian accent. Or that half-robot sword swallower chick the other night- that was good. Or even the guy with the vambraces and the different piano playing- well done, but definitely weird.

I couldn’t care less about the 6 year old from BFE who sings well. That’s utterly boring.

I’m getting a bit sick of Piers’ apparent homophobia. Case in point, the male pole dancer. He had a great body and was very talented. Yet not only did Piers buzz him, he stared at him with this look of total disgust for the whole act. Yet when there was a female pole dancer a couple weeks ago, who wasn’t nearly as talented as the guy, Piers was practically drooling down his shirt.

I’ve noticed this before. Whenever a performer is clearly gay and does a routine that is either somehow sexualized or camp, Piers acts like just their being there is offensive to him. Doesn’t matter if they are good or not. (If they are gay and are just a singer, or something where it doesn’t matter like part of large dance group, he doesn’t seem to care.) Yet have a hot girl shake her boobs and it’s the best thing he’s ever seen.

If he’s of the opinion that men ought not be wearing silver fake eyelashes, high heels and tight boy shorts, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s homophobic. For all you know, he’d be equally disgusted at a straight man dressed the same way.

There’s a difference between homophobia and having fairly narrow ideas of what gender roles and behavior ought to be.

Disliking anything that some gay men choose to do doesn’t make a person homophobic. If I refuse to go to gay dance clubs as a straight man, does that make me homophobic? No, it actually means that I don’t like any dance clubs or halls, gay or straight, techno or country, or anything in between.

He liked Prince Poppycock last season.

I kind of felt bad for Tripple Threat. I mean, they deserved the buzzes, but seemed very likeable, and they weren’t truly horrible like some of the other acts.

My DVR cut off a bit early - was there anyone after the piano player?

Some of my favorites would have to be, Landau(the Frank Sinatra guy), Mellissa Villasenor(the comedian), The hardcore Piano player guy, Illuminate, The one magician that made all those sexy women appear with the boxes, And Anna Graceman(The 11 year old girl who sang the Alicia Keys song). I didnt see any of you mention her by the way. She was extrEMELY talented, and providing she can atleast match, if not top her last performance, than I guarantee she will be a contender. Im sure there are others I liked also but I just cant remember them all.

Theres one thing I really want to get off my chest though. Reading through everyone’s posts, I noticed some people talking about Illuminate being nothing more than a cheap knock off of “Fighting Gravity” from 2010, and I have to say I completely disagree. If you can’t see the major differences between the two then you should re-evaluate your verdict. Long story short, here are the major differences between the two. Fighting Gravity focused their performances more on manipulating the darkness to make it seem…well…like they were fighitng gravity. But their dance skills were not even close to the level of illuminate, (although the slight movements they did incorporate into their acts were very smooth, and clean…) Illuminate on the other hand, incorporated flips, stunts, excellent coreography, and dancing, all not to mention the light up suit technology that was apparently created by the programmer. So I have to say I definitely think illuminate is an amazing act and is actually better than fighting gravity. And out of any other kind of act, THAT is something I would actually pay to see in Vegas. Not another damn singer. Singers are everywhere dammit. If u want singers go vote on american Idol. Im not saying I dislike the singers on AGT, but the purpose of having a show like this is to give a chance to people with more “out of the box” kinds of talents… But anywayy…WheW Sorry guys. I just ended up ranting, but thats all I got to say.

Yeah I agree with that. I though Illuminate was really cool. I’ve been lukewarm on the acts so far this season, but them I really enjoyed. And I would also like the winner to not be a singer. The singers have been the least impressive this year, perhaps because I keep comparing them to all the true singing talent that they had last year. I also really liked the magician who made all the women appear.

Whoops.

So, you must be happy that he’s back? And made it through this time.

Holy crap. I just read through this thread and none of it made sense to me. Until I realised that here in the UK they’re only just showing *last year’s *AGT.

Man, I hate regional scheduling sometimes.

Which was that guy? I don’t remember him.

Was there a second hour of the NYC auditions? My DVR said there was yet it never recorded it when it was on.

I don’t know if it varies in regions, but I was taping for a friend, and this is how this week’s episodes went:

Sunday, two episodes: repeats of last Monday and the first episode shown last Tuesday – NYC audition #1. There was supposed to be a second NYC episode that day, but because of the President’s speech they ‘joined in progress’ a repeat of an earlier episode.

Monday night was again a repeat – of the episode just repeated on Sunday!

Tuesday was new, the “2nd NYC” episode that was originally scheduled for last week.

Wednesday was supposed to be new, but I haven’t seen it yet so I dunno.

My thought at the end of Wed. episode “oh man that’s it?” There is NO ONE I care at all about in this season. Even the good people I don’t think are that good…especially the singers. It’s pretty stupid sounding of me to say that none of the singers had trained voices and I don’t like them because of that…but they really need coaching.

The lighted acts are just so-so and don’t have any wow factor for me. It’s just dead this year.

I’ll still watch (obviously) but this is paleing in comparison to last year

It really is amazing how weak the field was this year. Sort of unbelievable, really. All the talent in America has been seen already and we’re down to this???

Well, I just crusied through the Youtube auditions and there’s no Jackie Evancho (freak) waiting there, either. Some competent gymnastics and boring but decent singers, same old shit.

My favorite is Grandma… her grandson sucks, but she’s awesome.

This gal is a solid ventriloquist and a good singer, but Terry Fator is the standard, and it’s pretty much impossible to beat. Fator understands that the mere fact of being able to throw one’s voice effectively has, at best, about 1 minute of entertainment value. After that, you need to bring a lot more, as he does: impressions, humor, variety. She’s the same thing for 90 seconds and I was over it about 10 seconds in.

And I appreciate this troupe because they are tight and visually interesting, I’m burned out on the super busy dance groups…show me some hardcore precision moves. But they only have a tiny 38 second chunk up!

Wow, I just found out that a band I like is going to be on Tuesday.

Squonk Opera!

Here’s a short sample (this sample starts abruptly, and loud, but it gives a good idea of just how weird and, to me, interesting they are)

They’re a multi-media music group from Pittsburgh. They’re no flash-in-the-pans. I first saw them live back in the early '90’s, and their shows have only gotten bigger and more elaborate. I met the band after (we talked Genesis, because they’re named after a Genesis song) and they’re really nice and fun people. I have a feeling they’re going to be absolutely savaged because they’re so odd. I guess it all depends on what song they choose and how their show is presented (that is, toned down for the masses).

Most of my favorite singers wouldn’t make it past the regional tryouts for these types of shows because they don’t have the standard “power voices” required. I’m shaking my head in amazement that I actually know someone who’s going to be on one of them! I have a movie screening Tuesday night so I won’t get to see it live, but I’ll watch later via remote DVR.

Say, did the The Rhinestone Ropers (in the Huston auditions) make it past Vegas?

They were the act where the guy first threw knives at the woman, and then while spinning, she shot some targets.
