America's Got Talent Summer '10

I’ll defend Chips Cooney. I totally “get” his character and find him to be hilarious. The part about running out of ideas for illusions was simply the set-up for the stripping. It was something you wouldn’t see coming and that’s a major part of my fondness for the man–his entire act is irony, surprises, and absurdity. That makes it cool as hell. I hope the man makes it through because whatever he comes up with in the next round will definitely be great.

The people who liked him liked him because of his joke magic tricks. I liked him the first time; hated his second performance, and thought, “What the hell?” about his striptease. He needs to go. I’m betting America will vote him off.

He’s just keeping in character.

I’m not a fan of rap, but for what he does I think he’s pretty good at it. He’s very confident and sure of himself, and that goes a long way. So he talks like he’s from the streets. Big deal. He’s talking and acting the way he thinks will make him seem cool.

Pretty close. Those first three picked were shoe-ins. I was surprised at the last group of acts to be left tonight, though I am very glad that the vote went to Jeremy and not the belly dancers. Looking good in a bikini and waving around red fabric does not translate into talent.

Last night’s show was probably the best of them all. There will be some great acts that go home. These are my favorites and all deserve to advance. Tonight’s selection show will suck–and not just because Brett Michaels will perform.

Rudi Macaggi
Taylor Mathews
Arcattack
Doogie Horner
Prince Poppycock
Murray

I kinda wish variety shows would come back to TV. I understand that in reality they would have a limited appeal but I wish there was somewhere I could see Prince Poppycock, or Acrodunk for just a few minutes. Someone could sing a pretty song, and then it’s time for the ridiculous sketch!

Prince Poppycock should advance just on the strength of his costumes. In all honesty I’m not enough of an opera fan to go see a full length show of just him, but I’d love to see one song at a time in between jugglers and a comedian.

I’m thinking that the ones who will make it through will be

Somehow I see Prince Poppycock opening for Lady Gaga sometime in the near future.
Of course, wardrobes would get confused back stage, but otherwise a perfect combo.

Arcattack
Murray
Bald daring guy
Taylor
This sucks too because the one girl that I have been looking forward to for AGES (the violinist) totally dropped the ball. It also sucks that yesterdays show had to be so good, because I think a lot of good acts are going home.

Can you imagine a final between arcattack and defying gravity!!! They should forgo the “winner” and put them together in a show…it would be PERFECT for Vegas!!!

Tonight was a tough night, wayyyyy too many strong acts where previous weeks were a lot more of a given. Still, I gave my 30 votes to Doogie because even though he had no chance, he had me laughing hard.

Doogie’s act was actually quite brilliant if you ask me. it was a very coy satire on the whole “over-the-top”-ness that the show asks of its contestants. The jokes were intentionally bad, I think. (It kind of reminded me of this wonderful Roast of Bob Saget by Norm MacDonald)

Mary Ellen or Ellie May or whatever he name is, it is embarrasing she got this far. Violin dancing girl, awful. Arcattack, awesome. Da Maniacs, fun but …no. Prince Poppycock, wonderful. Murray, un-freaking-believable. Macaggi, fantastic. Taylor…yawn. The step group…buh-bye. The kid dancers…very good, but Vegas…really? Gospel group…yawn x 2. Last act I cannnot even remember.

Everyone who I predicted would go through did. I’m psychic! I think I’ll try out for next season.

But seriously Piers made a good point about wondering how Arcattack would be able to offer something different next time. Of course on the other hand, pretty much any Vegas act will be repeating themselves daily or nightly. But I guess for the judges they’ll have to try and freshen it up somehow.

Of course the same goes for Fighting Gravity. It seems there’s only so much they can do, which is fine for a Vegas act who will be constantly getting new audiences, but because of the judges they’ll need to try and change things up a little to win the contest in the first place.

Wow, kind of went downhill tonight.

The magic was pretty cool, but when it gets to the point that the judges are the most entertaining thing on the show…

Well, for the first 1hr and 30 minutes tonight I was thinking what a complete bust the YouTube episode was, and how could they even come up with enough to fill the four spots? Then those final three contestants performed and wow! The pianist was great, the magician was really cool and both tricks (the bird and the string) were really well done, and then Jackie Evancho was just unbelievable. That girl has got some incredible voice! I think those three are the clear winners of the night with the fourth spot going to… uh… let’s say the male singer Cam. (I thought the pizza guy was cool though. That looked really hard!)

When I heard Jackie Evancho I kept wondering if she was lip synching. She’s incredible and the other singers have got to be worried.

I liked the magician too. My wife called Howie a wuss for freaking out like that, and I loved how it made Sharron laugh uncontrollably.

One thing I didn’t like, and three performers did it, is the horribly cliched start out with a soft, older, well known song, then break into hip-hop. The first singing group did it, the pizza guy did it, and one other act did it.

I remember the first season, and Sharon’s visceral reaction to the little kids singing. No ten-year-old should win a show like this. How would it feel, to know it’s all been downhill since you were about to grow up-- You just had the high point of your life allready?

Everyone knows that Howie has massive OCD issues, right? Throwing a used NECK FLOSS at someone who can’t even shake hands is gonna make him jump. Sharon laughing was the best part of the whole show.

I felt bad for the “Riders in the Sky” dude, and his dawg. Way out of their element, clearly not ready, but they could have been fun. Never had a chance.

I don’t usually watch this show – I did the season Terry Fator won, but otherwise not – but when the hell are they going to get to some kind of actual competition? It’s the middle of fucking August and they’re still adding contestants? WTF?

They are probably still holding out for a performer worthy of a $1,000,000 dollars, they may have found her in Jackie Evancho but her age may be an issue.

The Season One winner was an 11-year-old girl.

I would make Jackie Evancho the 2-5 favorite to win the finale. I can’t see anyone beating her.

Yeah, she’s amazing – but my question is, why are they still dicking around with picking contestants two months into the show? Why aren’t they doing competitions and eliminations?
