America's Got Talent Summer '10

When the question is “why is [TV show] doing ” I find the answer is always the same - they think it will help their ratings. In this case, they may have been aware that their semifinalists had a reasonable chance of losing viewer interest as their acts were shown a few times, so someone probably decided to introduce a new element from YouTube. I’d say it worked, too.

The last four weeks have been twelve constestents —> 4.

This was the exactly the same, only with the You Tube bunch.

Now we have the semi-final 20, whom I am guessing will perform in batches of 10 for two weeks, whittled down to what… five each, so the finals are 10? That seems too many… I guess it says on the website…

:smack: How did I forget that?

Anyways, stay tuned for the WILD CARD episode, bringing back acts you had hoped were long forgotten and gone home…

They’re really milking this thing, aren’t they?

I wouldn’t mind seeing a couple wild card acts go to the finals. But some acts look like they’re there because the judges want to force them upon us.

But yeah, “They’re really milking this thing, aren’t they?” is almost verbatim what I said.

It’s funny, but I always thought of “finals” as being a small group of people competing. This group of finalists will be what, 24 acts?

Once again, I wish the goal wasn’t headlining a Vegas show. Jackie Evancho seems to be a combination of naturally talented and disciplined and I wish her well in all of her future endeavors. That said, I would never buy a ticket to a show in Las Vegas that rested squarely on the shoulders of a 10 year old girl. Do I want to hear her sing on the Mall on July 4th? Live at the Hollywood Bowl 2 nights in October? Sure, but not 2 shows a night and 3 on Sunday. There’s no doubt she could have a stellar career in music. Why does she have to have it right now?

As an aside, does anyone else think she looks a tiny bit like young Jodie Foster? (Courtship of Eddie’s Father Jodie Foster, not Taxi Driver Jodie Foster.)

I didn’t know until this thread that an 11 year old girl won the first season. Off to see if I can figure out what she’s doing now.

Was one of the Youtube acts missing from the results show? Twelve performed, but I counted only eleven appearing for the results. They bring out the contestants in four groups of three, but the 10-year-old came out with only one other act and I couldn’t think of who I didn’t see.

Did the old guy and his dog come out? I missed the first elimination.

Dog guy was there, he was in the first group.

There was one group of four - I think the first one, where Piers was making fun of Sharon because she was acting like she didn’t know who would get chosen, and only one person (pianist?) had displayed anything like talent (although I think the pizza guy was in there, and he was fun, if obviously not going on when the piano man was there).

Joe

The look on the guys face who did the acrobatic/dance thing being on stage with the 11-year old opera singer was so funny. You could just tell he knew there wasn’t a chance in hell he was moving on.

What did “original 11 year old winner” do that was so good anyway? sing? And who’d she beat?

I’m pretty new to AGT.

Anybody bother watching last night?

For the last two weeks, something went wrong with airing the show here, either with my cable company or the network or something, so I was a little behind in knowing what was up with this show. Imagine my surprise when I tuned in last night, and not only could I watch the show, but it turned out to be “The best of the also-ran.”

I am glad that the boy with the kite got his moment on live t.v., but I don’t see him moving on in the competition. Doogie brought his game, though, and I do hope he gets through. The magician impressed me, too, which means if he gets voted in, there might just be too many magicians for the show. Just my opinion.

None of the dancers impressed me, but I think one of the interview segments said they only had 2 days to prepare. What a way to make sure no one is at the top of their games.

I didn’t think the ariel act was that good, either, but I did get a kick out of how all three judges thought the fall was real (maybe I’m jaded, but I figured it was a planned part of the act the second it happened). I really liked how Howie compared it to someone throwing neck floss at him.

Unless I missed something, none of the acts they brought back were singers. Maybe they realized they had too many already? Don’t know.

Overall, I enjoyed last night’s show more than I thought I would when I realized it was “bring back the ones we’ve voted off already,” show.

I think Doogie kicked ass. (BTW, does he ever blink?)
The aerial acrobats were good.
Michael Grasso brought his A Game.
The kid dancers will probaby advance, too.

Many of the acts were so disappointing. I mean, the tap dancers were, as Howie and Piers said, boring. I had high hopes for RNG, but they disappointed me. I guess I’m in the minority, or even all alone, but Doogie Horner didn’t seem all that funny to me.

Kruti Dance Academy, Rudi Macaggi, CJ Dippa, and Swing Shift Side Show were all just so so for me.

Connor Doran is amazing. Hell, when I use to fly kites as a kid I had trouble flying them in the wind, and he does it without wind. But still, would people pay for a Vegas show? It’s great watching him for 90 seconds, but I wonder if he could hold an audience for a half hour or full hour, or however long it would last.

Anna and Patryk are pretty good too, but I don’t know if they’re Vega headliner good.

As said earlier Michael Grasso brought his A game, and I think should go through, and I’m probably alone in this, but I loved Harmonica Pierre’s performance and think that he should go through.

And for Michael and Ashley, even though I was sure dropping her was part of the act, part of me was still worried anyway.

I was in complete agreement with Howie on the icky factor of these kids trying to do a sexy dance.

I very much like Doogie, but I can’t put my finger on why.

I didn’t watch – who went through?

Michael Grasso, the kid dancers, Connor the kite flyer, and the trapeze act.

So, one pick by Sharon, one by Piers, and two by Howie.
I’m glad they went back and grabbed a few people that had been dropped at the Vegas level, rather than having them all be acts that America had already had a chance to like/reject. Especially since it paid off providing 3 out of the four who went on.

The kite flyer is incredibly lame. I do not get that at all. I also do not get why everyone seems to be treating epilepsy like a form of mental retardation.

I’m annoyed.

Cool – I liked Michael Grasso, and I liked the trapeze act. The kid dancers were, at least, better than the kid rapper. The kite flyer – meh. As Stoid says, epilepsy isn’t exactly a cognitive disability.

It’s pretty clear to me the kid has more than just epilepsy. My guess would be some sort of autism.
