Amy Winehouse Has Emphysema

Not to disagree, but the same could be said of Otis Redding or Jimi Hendrix.

Perhaps, but Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix had very obvious and notable influence. Amy Winehouse put on a polka dot dress and claimed to be “60’s throwback.” There’s just no actual innovation, or even any real indication that she’s ever listened to a Phil Specter record. The real sound comes from The Dap-Kings, who really deserve the credit for Winehouse’s success.

No, it couldn’t. She’s had one big hit in the U.S. and that’s it, although in the U.K. it’s a very different story.

Oh, for sure. Britney’s music would have been completely souless had she not lived a life of drugs, hard living and loss. Someone who hadn’t experienced the lifestyle couldn’t write lyrics like

and

Deep.

“Yes, I’ve had fun while turning my lungs to cheese, cheese, cheese.”

To be fair to Smid, Britney probably didn’t write any of those lyrics. I’ve never heard an Amy Winehouse song.

I’m surprised this thread has gone on so long without someone posting these horrifying Amy Winehouse before-and-after pictures.

Serves me right to go pull my lunch out of the microwave between clicking on that link and looking at the pictures. :frowning:

He didn’t say that lifestyle guaranteed good music, he just said it was a pre-requisite for the sort of music he likes. Given that Winehouse’s biggest hit to date is called “Rehab”, this is somewhat hard to argue with.

Equally, when Chris Martin writes a song entitled “I’m a whiny cockface with a sadistic taste in children’s names”, the world will surely accord him the respect that is due for an opinion well earned.

Think skeevier and more communicable.

In ten years Amy Winehouse will be a footnote (with a few decent songs under her belt) and Coldplay will be the reigning gods of music.

Where they belong!

TMZ (guilty pleasure, what can I say) had a picture of her coming out of the hospital -cig in mouth. She is HOPELESS.

What a crushingly depressing prospect. Will they have learnt to write a chorus by then?

Otis Redding was a one hit wonder? Man, I have notbeen paying attention.

Hey, at least you’ve gone one better than him.

Actually, you were. I counted 15 top 20 hits on the R&B chart for him - and that’s before Dock of the Bay, which came out after he died, and some other posthumous hits. Wikipedia doesn’t give Jimi’s U.S. singles totals that I could see, but he had four top-five albums in the U.S. These guys had short careers for sure, but they weren’t one-hit wonders.

Okay, halfway busted. I can cop to that. Otis Redding had lots of hits.

Jimi, however, had exactly one top 40 (U.S.) hit, his cover of Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower.” I see he was much more “popular” (by that measure) in the UK, however.

My point wasn’t the facts of these matters, but that the average radio listener (which as far as Otis Redding goes, I definitely consider myself to be) would not know any differently. Not that I said “could be said” not “is true.”

So the “average radio listener” has not heard of Purple Haze?? Castles Made of Sand? Foxy Lady? If you’re going by the strictest definition of one-hit wonder and going by the hit charts, I guess you could conclude that he was a one-hit wonder, but I think for practical applications, this just isn’t true.

Gawd, those Amy before/after pics are awful. I mean, I’m sure they juxtaposed the best of the lot with the worst of the lot to get the greatest effect, but still. The only time I’ve looked as disgusting as she does in some of those pics is when I was in intensive care. I think I had a pretty good excuse; she’s just skanky as hell.
